    Serious 4x4ers in Australia are finding major faults with the rhino rack systems,
    A rack with a 100kg rating ends up being something like 23kg in offroad situations, all depends on the roof rating of your vehicle,

      Ya i am alarmed about this. If you are talking about Ronny's calculation, well he did it wrong. It should be 32kg for offroad load. I will point out in a upcoming video perhaps. And I am well aware of my different load rating as there was a chart printed on the first page of product manual, can't miss that.

    Please read the fine print on Rhino Rack which the supplier had not being telling its customers on the loading limitations upfront but hidden in fine prints where customers do not usually look for. It had much less loading limit if used off-road. A recent event of the Rhino rack slipping off the 4wd by Tyler Thompson ( check his UA-cam channel of same name ) in Australia revealed this limitation which caught many by surprise. Subsequently, Ronny Dahl ( a big you tuber of same name in Australia) shared the warning on Rhino Rack limitations which even he was surprised by its low loading limits.

    Make sure you don’t overload it, what is your l9mit Toyota allows you to put on your roof. What is load rating of your rack on and off road. This has been a big issue of late here in Australia.

    Great video as always!
    I’m not sure if you’ve seen, there’s been a few content creators realising that the off-road payload for Rhino Platforms is, well, dismal. 20-30kg max off-road.
    Here’s one from Ronny Dahl today on it: ua-cam.com/video/r32xd9z4SZ4/v-deo.html
    I’m particularly bummed, also having the same rack and platform on the same vehicle as him.

    • @SteveBurns80
      @SteveBurns80 3 роки тому

      Yes but luckily for us 100 series owners we have a much stronger roof construction than the poxy Hilux. About 120kgs dynamic load from memory. No stupid little pop rivets for mounting the backbone on the 100, instead there are 12 good size bolts. So the load raitings on and off road are much higher for this roof and rack system.
      But yes, always good to check your load raiting for your type of vehicle and rack system. As Tyler and Ronny found out the hard way.

    • @bencorlett
      @bencorlett 3 роки тому

      @@SteveBurns80 absolutely, totally agree.
      Rhino Rack just released a load calculator: www.rhinorack.com/en-au/load-rating-calculator
      According to this, it looks like the 105 is good for around 53kg of payload off road, which is better than 25kg, but still not enough for many (or any) RTTs (assuming absolutely nothing else is on the rack).

    • @SteveBurns80
      @SteveBurns80 3 роки тому

      @@bencorlett Yeah it's just bad form that Rhino have such a confusing load rating! It happened to me 8 years ago when my Rhino track mounts ripped off my Triton roof. I complained back then to Rhino that their load raitings need to be more clear. I didn't even get a response.
      Out of principal, I went for a different brand of rack for my 100 series. The brand I went with keeps it very simple by only giving the off road/ dynamic load rating.

    What's your experience of overlanding with Jeep Wrangler and Land Cruiser? Which vehicle is more practical or fun for overlanding and touring? Honestly I'm more attracted to Jeep, but it seems there are quite a few limitations in terms of weight and towing.

    • @OverlandLady
      @OverlandLady  3 роки тому +1

      Honestly I'd put Jeep for first option if you are into recreational 4 wheeling like rock crawling. However for prolonged overlanding trips, factors other than offroad capabilities are also taken into strong consideration: ride confort, reliability, space, payload, and yes towing. hence I'd lean towards a big IFS for this purpose. Yes Jeep gave me more of a wow factor but in the end it's about actual usage. Great vehicle, I'm just too chicken to hard core rock crawl.

      As for BC, there's a guy making more indepth map layer to put in Gaia, it's called Top Notch Navigation. Basically I just zoom in to the town I'm heading to and check surrounding forest roads, look for lakes and creeks.

    Careful with how much weight you put on it, it has a on road and “ of road rating” and there are both different, it does not hold as much weight off road as it does on road! check out Tyler Thompson’s roof rack video on UA-cam, he explains everything.

    • @OverlandLady
      @OverlandLady  3 роки тому

      In which part did you see we use rivet in my setup? It’s instructed to use factory mounting points which are threaded. So my kit uses M8 bolts which technically is less sturdy than properly done rivet bcz rivets don’t move if holes and washers are installed properly.
      My offroad load rating is 55kg, along with on road and static data in a chart printed on the FRONT PAGE on my instruction paper which every user should have seen. If you are using a shop, it is the shop’s responsibility to give this to you.

    Here's Tyler Thompson video that had a mishap for his Rhino rack. he alerted Ronny about this
    ua-cam.com/video/eMx232haRyo/v-deo.html

      Not the case with 100 series. The roof construction is far stronger than any poxy Hilux or other dual cab and has a much higher load raiting on road and off road. The rack is also rated higher due to the 12 m8 bolt mountings for the backbone. No stupid pop rivets used with this system.

    • @LocavoreSpace
      @LocavoreSpace 3 роки тому +1

      @@SteveBurns80 Fair enough, I'll grant you that. The Land Cruiser does have a very impressive 200kg roof load rating. However, the point Ronny and Tyler make is the importance of calculating the Off Road Load rating for whatever vehicle you're modifying.
      Using RR's calculator, for the Pioneer Platform on a 100 Series, the Payload Capacity is 77kg. Then when you calculate the Off Road Load rating 77kg/1.5 = 51.3kg.
      The calculator could be better but the worst part is they don't just give you the Off Road Load rating as a calculation result. Instead they write "Special Note: Off Road Load Rating can be calculated by using the formula provided in your Rhino-Rack fitting instructions." This is something you need to know before you purchase to see if it will meet your needs.
