That terror dog in the hallway fix is great, but you forgot to mask the door jamb fragment back over top. That was a detail in the original that made it feel integrated.
As Ghostbusters is my #1 movie I was a little bit hesitant about anyone touching the movie to try to do updates to fix things. But after watching this I think the changes you made and the explanations you provided did was excellent. Plus you really worked hard to respect the original material in incorporating the fixes. Excellent job.
It's a fine balance between respecting the original and utterly changing something completely.. I would never want to do a George Lucas on any of these classic movies but as the decades pass by, these film start to age considerably as modern technology forces them to do so...but... I don't think there's anything wrong in brushing the dust of these movies and giving them a few licks of fresh paint...
I really enjoyed this. As an amateur at best video editor and photoshopper, I can appreciate the amount of time and tracking this took. Amazingly inventive stuff in some cases, and even though I've watched the movie a jillion times, I won't be able to unsee the mistakes now - which is kinda cool - a whole new way to watch!
Great work. I like that you managed to keep the looks of the original effects improving on them, instead of simply replacing them. One movie that I'd love to see fixed is JAWS 3-D. Not a classic but the main issue IMO are the rushed effects and even missing effects (like the green screen on the tunnel scene when the girl yells "Daddy look at the fish!" and the infamous static shark breaking the control window in the end). The mechanical shark on that one is the best looking of them all, but the opticals are terrible - I'd love to see them fixed if possible on 3-D.
If you’re interested in a more comprehensive look on how Ghostbusters was made, and a deeper dive into the original visual effects, then you should watch Cleanin’ Up the Town: Remembering Ghostbusters.
I've seen it too. But you know how people like to nit pick about fx etc. The film had minor flaws anyway. I noticed the terror dogs were not detailed. I never notice the transparency of the gargoyle or the overlays. These remastering have added even more longevity to this🫡
I saw this movie in 1984 when I was 7 with my mother, younger sister and older sister I was teasing my younger sister at the opening scene until the "get her" bit, it scared the crap out of me and my sisters and I have been a huge fan ever since. Great job by the way!
I manage the archives for Steve Johnson, who created Slimer, the subway ghost, librarian and several other characters in Ghostbusters. The subway ghost has a ton of detail that the movie couldn't show because of how it was shot and composited.
I have seen this well I don’t know… could be a 100 times… sometimes it’s just in the background but still… some mistakes are pretty obvious while others such as transparency issue I have never noticed before… this is great stuff and great attention to details. Thank you for your hard work! For a big fan of this film this is a real treat!
Have you released it or is it still in progress? The links on the website don't seem to work. Also, I've got a few mistakes that could be fixed you didn't mention. 1. When Dana goes to the Ghostbusters office the first time and Venkman rushes to meet her, something that looks like the foot of a crew member hiding behind the file storage furniture (sorry, I don't know the exact English word for it) can be seen moving in the lower left corner of the frame. 2. The establishing shot of Dana's apartment early in the movie and the one from later when the containment unit is shut down and dark clouds appear over it are exactly the same. It is evident by the same people lying on the grass in the park and the same cars in the background passing by. Maybe you could just remove some of those people in the second shot in order not to make it look blatantly the same.
Stellar work. If you plan to do more effects fixes on ghostbusters, I’ve got a list here. 1. During the ballroom scene, there’s a few shots were the proton streams actually shot into the wands rather than shooting out. 2. In that over head shot of Stay Puft walking, there’s a small rod following him next to his right leg. 3. During the subway scene in Ghostbusters 2 when the ghost train is steaming towards the camera, the train keeps shifting left to right on the tracks. 4. In a bunch of shots from Ghostbusters 2; the proton streams lens flares are either missing, misaligned, or blinking too quick and sometimes the actual streams have a different color or design. 5. During the Ghost montage in Ghostbusters 2, The big scary yellow ghost is completely misaligned and too transparent.
Excellent observations... I can't do anything about the proton packs BUT that stabilizing rod sticking out of Stay Puft's leg is awful...how could so many not see it! it's sooo painful...and now it's GONE :) thanks.
@@DoubleOProductions The proton streams were deliberately going toward the wands in the first film. The Cinefex article talks in depth about this design choice by animators Terry Windell and Garry Waller. It doesn't need to be 'corrected'. To quote: 'The Nutrona wands, in particular, reflect the Waller and Windell philosophy. "If the characters were explaining the Nutrona beams in the movie," Windell noted, "they would say that they were an energy source produced by the guns. When the guns fire, particles are extracted into the gun which produces the red core beam. Then another forces pushes outward surrounding the beam, which is electrical and blue in color. The result is this back-and-forth directional beam that sucks in energy as it blows out electricity." '
@@DoubleOProductions And the 'rod' is a bundle of cables going through a slit in the floor to the puppeteers controlling Stay-Puft's facial movements, who were being pushed along on a cart underneath the miniature street.
Surprised you didn't tackle the ballroom shot where the glow effect for Slimer was overlayed ontop of the stream effects. It's gone back and forth between being corrected and not on various releases of the film, too. Otherwise, outstanding work. Wouldn't mind getting a copy of the film with your fixes placed in.
One thing about the Marshmallow Man walking on the miniature (the shot you color corrected) - it's strangely unpopulated, yet other shots have running people. Maybe comp in some on the "empty" shot?
Great job, man!!! The matte compositing shots look superb, as do the hallway terror dog and the Stay Puft leg one. The only ones that (and I mean this, of course, in the most constructive way possible) I think are a bit rough still are the closet dog and the subway ghost. With the dog, my only issue is that the head is just too big (you can see that even if it's looking down, in the original shot it's much smaller) and, while more detailed, it looks disproportionate and kind of like a still image moving about. I think that by shrinking the head and adding some motion blur and (most importantly) some extra glow to the eyes, you're golden. The thing about the subway ghost is that the immediate background flickers, and you can see the people behind it glitching about. Again, these are TOUGH shots to fix, and this is a FANTASTIC job altogether. I'm especially surprised by the shot with Stay Puft, really, REALLY amazing job fixing that one, looks impeccable. If there's one I could recommend that always bothered me a little, it's the one where Ray tries to shoot Slimer and you see that the "dark" areas in Slimer are purely transparent as if they composited the brighter areas only and the shadows are just not there. I'm sure you could do a really terrific job with that one. Keep up the good work!!! :)
its quite therapeutic watching these. I think it's not a bad thing and tweak effects when it makes sense. I think Star Wars went a bit too far, tweaks to the original optical effects and cleaning of matt lines etc makes sense. But I think they went a bit silly in places with cgi shots that already look older than the original model shots. These clean up jobs are fantastic, keeping the original intent and just subtly tweaking it so it doesn't stand out so much ion hi-res. Well done!
What about the bad sparks superimposed at the end when they throw the proton streams into the Gozerian temple? Or the fact that the burn marks on the wall in the Sedgewick during one of the first proton pack firings appear before the the proton stream strikes the wall there?
Where can I find the full thing? Also I'd really like to see something like this done for The Rocketeer. Specifically color correcting the flying shots to make the composite match better.

I certainly would consider re-comping some of those alien shots...I'm certainly they can be made to blend sooo much smother than their current state... out of curiosity, would you, in your edit go for the bambi burster or keep is as coming from a dog?
Awesome!! I'd like to collab if you're up for it? I'm really split on which one to use. I did think of trying to add 3 aliens and keep them both but I don't think it's possible. Which do you prefer?
@@MoviesRemastered I have to be honest...I do prefer the bambi burster... mainly because the face hugger is different as is the alien as part of the biological hierarchy for the production of a new colony... they're important details that show how a fresh colony is born rather than standard 'alien's' and alien reproduction from an already fully established colony....
Agreed. That one point why I liked the aqua alien in Resurrection. I've always thought the DNA mixed with the host but coming from the Ox wouldn't make it as agile, which is why I thought about keeping the dog. Those dog burst scenes are pretty hilarious though.
The "inconsistent time of day" towards the end of the movie is due to the dark, overcast sky. Shortly after Gozer is resealed via the now-destroyed gateway, the sky clears up.

The shot at 11:00 was likely flopped since the lights on their pack rotate in the opposite direction from the rest of the movie. Maybe this too could be fixed.
There is also a continuity error when the 4 busters first fire their proton streams at Mr. Stay Puft on the roof. The Stay Puft costume is missing its red tie. To reshoot the scene, it would have cost them $30,000 for another Stay Puft suit.
Amazing works! I loved the batman cut ... Hope to see this version soon ;) I noticed that the wall moves when the cart hits it when they chase slimer in the hotel. Do you consider to correct it ? Is it to much work to steady it ? Thanks for all your work ! I'm waiting to Batman REturn :D
well thank you and yes, when it comes to things like a moving wall we have to weigh up the logistics behind it... it's clearly a cavity wall or stud wall and with simple plaster board, a cart slamming into it might actually wobble it somewhat... so i think it's best to leave this one.

Stellar work! Why aren’t the studios doing this for the 4k remasters and offering “remastered” or original versions on the disk? You’re bringing the movies to a “best they can be” level For £20-£30 for most 4k movies This should be standard procedure imo Love the work on the channel 👍
Because they're remasters, they're only meant to upscale the image and maybe mess with the colour etc. Correcting VFX shots etc takes more time and money.
Not to critised your work. The marshmallow man footshot. The most off putting part about it is the janky masking of the people running past it. That's what always got me about it. Didn't even pay attention to windows
The movie is just called Ghostbusters why would you need to put "1984" after it in your video title. There is no confusion as there's only one film called simply Ghostbusters.
This looks incredible promising! Please consider an alternative to mega.nz when sharing, I still can't score Batman Returns, but was able to check out your stellar Batman efforts without any problems. As far as a good film in need of effects repair, I nominate The Rocketeer.
Ah, "The Rocketeer". Not the film it coulda been when comparing it to the original comics, but it holds a certain sweet Disney nostalgia, if one can even be nostalgic for as recent an age as around 1990.
Your sky looks very unnatural in that first shot. A real sky is one solid color, or with very gradual gradations (at least, when it's very blue like that). The only thing breaking up the blue are clouds. But you have random streaks of different shades of blue all over the sky, and looks completely unnatural. What you corrected was a very subtle matte issue, but in doing so, you created an enormously obvious error.
Fix and update it? You mean like cast four women instead of dudes, and don't bother with the script, but just let the actors improvise cos the 'jokes' can be fixed in the edit, right?
That terror dog in the hallway fix is great, but you forgot to mask the door jamb fragment back over top. That was a detail in the original that made it feel integrated.

You’re bringing the movies to a “best they can be” level
For £20-£30 for most 4k movies
This should be standard procedure imo
Love the work on the channel 👍
Because they're remasters, they're only meant to upscale the image and maybe mess with the colour etc. Correcting VFX shots etc takes more time and money.
I would suggest- 1963S -JACK THE GIANT KILLER but that could be too big a job
Not to critised your work. The marshmallow man footshot. The most off putting part about it is the janky masking of the people running past it. That's what always got me about it. Didn't even pay attention to windows
Literally 1984.
The terror dogs were the worst part of the special effects. So glitchy. Especially running across street.
Agreed...we're still working on the running scene across the street at night! it's taking a very very long time to complete...
The movie was released in 1984. It looks the way it does because that's what it looked like. Leave it be.
GB 1984 Turbo Edition!👻🚫
I hate motion blurr, it actually takes away from the final product over all in my mind
Why cant a multi billion dollar company sort this out. Why does it take fans to basically do it for free.
The movie is just called Ghostbusters why would you need to put "1984" after it in your video title. There is no confusion as there's only one film called simply Ghostbusters.
oh but you'd be surprised how many confused people are out there..
This looks incredible promising! Please consider an alternative to mega.nz when sharing, I still can't score Batman Returns, but was able to check out your stellar Batman efforts without any problems.
As far as a good film in need of effects repair, I nominate The Rocketeer.
Ah yes... Rocketeer... there's a blast from the past! Thanks 👍
You mean like cast four women instead of dudes, and don't bother with the script, but just let the actors improvise cos the 'jokes' can be fixed in the edit, right?
no.... actually repair some of the errors and bad visual effects.
oh and that version with the women doesn't exist..it aint a ghostbusters film.
Nothing to fix or update 👎
