@@Mr71paul71 really? Possibly you have completely missed the point of Marsh's character. He is a sad fool, worthy only of pity. Vindictive, untrusting, untrustworthy. He fears everyone because he believes everyone else thinks like he does. He values only status- thinking labels make him superior. When his wife leaves him and he loses his stripes he decides to kill himself. There are 'snowflakes' - people that melt when the heat is on- true, but they need people like the sergeant major who is cool under pressure, doesn't shout when things go wrong- patient, understanding, and fair. Classic example; when Lilley faints in series 3, he doesn't insult him and punish him- he helps him up, loosens his collar, asks if he need to go outside. offers support and encouragement.
Defence spending running at an average of 10% of GDP during the 50's had the useful effect of taking men like Marsh, and removing them from civil society. If this show was reality, Marsh would have likely made SGT by the end of the 50's, but being totally unsuitable for the more managerial level of FSGT, would have been given the boot by 63 when national service ended. Destined to spend the rest of his life bemoaning civilian ways that he perceived as not recognising his true worth :)
@@eddie30991 He's sporting that and the Defence medal in this episode, an unlikely combination missing the 39-45 Star, and the War medal ? In the previous series he had the UN Korea medal up. Given the size of the RAF in those National Service days, a bloke who'd seen service in both WWII and Korea might have been looking at Warrant Officer rank by 1955 ? Or maybe career progression for the per ardua crowd had a log jam at Flight Sergeant level.
Robert Lindsay's then wife Cheryl Hall appears in this episode as Melody. She was in Citizen Smith for two series.
"C'mon bum fluff, the RAF's here!" LMAO
That wasn't a barman that was a magician judging by the speed he produced those drinks!

FSGT Wells has lost both his well shaped beret, and his Korean War medal from one series to the next :)
It wasn't the Korea Medal, it was the France and Germany Star.
