UNC fan here. I've been watching DJ Burns for years now and am not ashamed to say he's my favorite player in college ball. Every game I watch with friends or out in public people are always talking about his weight and I love watching their jaws drop and getting to say "I told you so" when he takes over games. There is no way a guy that big should be that agile on his feet, move like a ballerina, and dish the ball like a guard.
@@Happytarheel7I have multiple friends that went to UNC that texted me during the championship game saying they couldn’t help but be a little happy to see Burns going off. People love him and for good reason. I could say you’re not a real basketball fan if you don’t like to watch the dancing bear play 🙂
A college kid who's that big with those post moves is a joy to watch. Spin move, up and under, baby hook, turnaround jumper, soft touch, it's a clinic every game. When defenses try to double team him, he shows off his the court vision and passing skills. it's no wonder he's a problem the Tournament field hasn't been able to solve. I'm looking forward to seeing him and Purdue's center on the same court in the Final Four.
Honestly as a lifelong NC State fan (really started watching in the late 90s), DJ Burns has become my favorite player I’ve ever gotten to see wear the Red and White. I’m so excited that more basketball fans are going to get to see him in action. He is proof that athletes really do come in all sizes. In the Championship game he played 28 minutes which is way more than usual and he obviously played really well even with those extra minutes in his 5th game in 5 days. If you really watch him, he doesn’t trot down the court when it’s time to defend. He really works to help on defense as best as he can. He’s not a great defender because he’s slower than most players, but he has made great strides this year to be more consistent defensively so that his teammates can know what to expect and how to help. He is also completely unfiltered and unafraid to speak his mind; right after winning the championship his message to the fans was “to those who stayed with us, thank you. And to those who are here now, welcome back!” 😂 which honestly was a surprisingly measured way to call out some of the mean stuff directed mainly towards him and Coach Keatts when things weren’t going well. He also had the best quote of the tournament after battling through a very physical Virginia team without getting much help from officiating. He said, “I told myself ‘you can either get in your feelings, or you can go win this game.” After all the hate he’s dealt with, this is a guy who has earned the respect he’s getting now. Thanks for this content! Go Pack!
Nah, his best quote was after the Duke game when he was asked how he felt about fans from other schools cheering for him. "They're not cheering for us, they're cheering against Duke. There's a difference."
He attended Tennessee. He classed up from 2019 to the class 2018 at the age of 17 and did redshirt at Tennessee. Otherwise, pretty accurate. Thanks for posting!
There are lots of big guys that have great footwork and a soft touch...To me DJs biggest strength, and what makes him a unicorn, is that he has the vision and passing ability of a guard. You can't double team him because he will always find the open person. It's an almost impossible match up one on one, but it's also not beneficial to double team him either because of his passing ability. You saw that at play in the Virginia and UNC game...neither of those teams were double teaming him when he was down low. Not because they didn't want to, but because they correctly realized that he would make their lives even more miserable with his passing ability if they double teamed. Either let him score two off the 1v1 matchup, or double team him and let him find a wide open guard beyond the arc to sink a three. It's an impossible coaching decision, one where you have to choose the lesser of two evils. In a way, the fact that he wasn't double teamed shows just how much those teams respected his passing threat.
Nobody can guard the big fella. And no team plays w as much confidence, grit, toughness, fight, and togetherness. The NCAA betta be ready, bc this team will NEVER GIVE UP!
Out of all the teams that UNC could have seen in the ACC finale, I think they probably weren't exactly relieved to see the Pack. It's hard to beat a team 3 times much less one that is like a wounded animal in a corner. A team that has nothing to lose is a very dangerous team to play. This is the team Tex Tech has to face. It will not be pretty.
Basketball is a push and shove sport today. A few years ago, he would have fouled out for pushing defenders around to get in position for an easy shot. Defenders are shed with shoves then called for fouling. I don't care too much for the game today after watching two top teams play for almost four minutes with only 2 points scored. Is it poor shooting or poor coaching or both?
I disagree. This brand of basketball is reminiscent of early 90's NBA where the offense started in the middle. I'm tired of the modern game and all the 3 pointers. Boring. In terms of the physical play, I would say this... when the defender is pushing the post guy with both hands all rules are off. What you failed to see is that guys like DJ Burns are literally being pushed with extended arms which used to be a foul. Used to be that defenders were able to put a bent forearm into the back but could not extend that arm.
Middle of the road Big 12 team? You mean tied for third in the Big 12 regular season and tournament despite numerous injuries? Only behind the consensus #1 overall UH team and a strong and healthier ISU? Also, the DJ's "clearly had better years than Pop and Joe"? Because they averaged one point and .3 points more a game? You clearly aren't familiar with Pop's game and Joe is not one of Tech's two best players. Even then, they both accounted for more points per game than the two wolfpack players when you account for assists.
@@busterboyd4125 Wrong about that one, wasn't I. Go Oakland Golden Grizzlies. Still, I would have loved to have seen Kentucky run this guy ragged up and down the court.
@@tommysmith2409That's the strategy I would employ against DJ Burns but then State has bigs like Diarra and Middlebrooks that can run the floor which is why few have been successful trying that.
