Thanks Jesse for the last month of weekends I have cracked my head trying to get OBS and Elgato to record........now after watching your tutorial for the first time I have good video and audio game capture. Much appreciated your time and effort that you put into making this tutorial.
the other tuts didnt really help me stop the lag cause i have a decent computer and running games 60fps but the final result of the video is very laggy. this tut was really good tho and u r certainty very underrated ^^
*FAQ* & some things I wanted to mention after re-watching my tutorial: 1) *NVENC* - Recording with NVENC is a perfectly viable option. It uses by far the least amount of resources when recording. When I said it was the "worst" option, I didn't mean you should avoid using it. It was a poor choice of words because NVENC is typically the best option to use much of the time, especially in CPU intensive games. I will always record using NVENC before reducing FPS or downscaling the resolution. 2) *Audio Tracks* - If you are NOT going to be editing your gaming footage after you record it, make sure to put both you game audio and microphone audio onto track 1. If you put them on separate tracks like we did in the tutorial, playing it back with a video program such as Windows Media Player, VLC, etc. will only playback the audio from track 1. This is because video programs will play just one audio track at a time, typically defaulting to track 1. This doesn't mean the other audio track isn't there, you just won' t be able to hear it. You can check to see if the other audio track recorded properly by selecting track 2 from the audio menu in VLC. I highly recommend editing your footage afterwards, but if you aren't doing this then put them both on track 1 and make sure to adjust their volume levels, as you won't be able to change it later. 3) *3 Modes Not Working* - If the 3 modes shown in the tutorial aren't working, open both OBS and your game in Administrator Mode (right click the program icon, select run admin mode). If that doesn't work, using Display Capture will always work to record (and is often preferable for recording videos such as tutorials, reaction videos, etc). Display Capture mode simply records whatever you can see on your monitor. To use it click the + icon under sources and select Display Capture.
This is actually a really great video, especially for someone like me who does not know much about computers. Although my computer is not good enough to record quality content, I was still very grateful for this video. Thanks!
this is great! i looked at multiple videos of People showing how to game capture, but this tutorial worked! I tried recording ''the forest'', but the screen turned black so thank you so much for showing multiple options for games! :D
mp4 is definitely an option that one could choose, but mkv is also a lot safer. when recording in mp4, if OBS crashes or your computer crashes or there is power loss to your machine while recording, you will lose all of that data and it's not easy to recover if you even have that option. With mkv, all your recording data will remain and all the progress you made in your game will have been recorded and saved. I recommend this file type to ensure worst case scenario doesn't happen, and then change the format to mp4 later before you upload to UA-cam.
This has been the most thorough and well produced OBS set up video I have watched so far on UA-cam. You definitely deserve millions of subscribers. Here is a subscribtion from me to help you get there. Thanks for the great tutorial! Looking forward to more awesome tutorials.
open your game and OBS with admin mode. If that doesn't work use display capture, which will always work. Some games just have problems with OBS, but 99% work just fine.
This tutorial will teach you how to record your PC gameplay using the free program OBS Studio. Setup your first scene, add game capture and audio sources on multiple tracks, setup your microphone, then learn the best settings for recording in 1080p at 60fps. For people with slow computers, this tutorial will explain what each setting does, as well as which ones to adjust if your computer is not capable of recording at the highest possible settings. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments and I will try to help you. Here is a breakdown of the video: 1) 0:30 - Install OBS Studio 2) 0:42 - Change OBS from light to dark theme 3) 1:10 - Adding a Scene 4) 1:33 - Adding Game Capture to Sources 5) 1:49 - Game Capture Mode #1 - "Capture any fullscreen application" 6) 2:09 - Opening game to record from Steam 7) 2:50 - Game Capture Mode #2 - "Capture specific window" 8) 3:25 - Game Capture Mode #3 - "Capture foreground window with hotkey" 9) 3:41 - Setting Hotkey for Capture Foreground Window 10) 5:07 - Audio Settings - Sample rate 11) 7:04 - Audio Settings - Desktop audio device 12) 7:32 - Audio Settings - Mic/Auxillary audio device 13) 8:00 - Output - changing from simple to advanced mode 14) 8:08 - Output/Audio - Setting audio track bitrate / naming audio tracks 15) 9:26 - Mixer Settings - Downmix to Mono for microphone 16) 9:31 - Mixer Settings - Selecting audio track numbers 17) 10:45 - Video Settings - Base (Canvas) Resolution 18) 11:31 - Video Settings - Output (Scaled) Resolution 19) 11:58 - Video Settings - Downscale Filter 20) 12:40 - Video Settings - Common FPS Values 21) 12:58 - Discussing reducing video settings for slow computers 22) 13:45 - Output/Recording Settings 23) 13:55 - Output/Recording Settings - Type 24) 13:58 - Output/Recording Settings - Recording Path 25) 14:09 - Output/Recording Settings - Generate file name without spaces 26) 14:25 - Output/Recording Settings - Recording Format (mp4) 27) 14:59 - Output/Recording Settings - Audio Track 28) 15:20 - Output/Recording Settings - Encoder (NVENC, Quicksync, x264) 29) 17:15 - Output/Recording Settings - Rescale Output 30) 17:57 - Output/Recording Settings - Rate Control (VBR vs CBR) 31) 18:37 - Output/Recording Settings - Bitrate (Quality vs file size, UA-cam compression) 32) 20:24 - Output/Recording Settings - Custom Buffer Size 33) 20:30 - Output/Recording Settings - Keyframe Interval 34) 21:29 - Output/Recording Settings - Cpu Usage Preset 35) 22:11 - Output/Recording Settings - Profile 36) 22:32 - Output/Recording Settings - Tune 37) 22:42 - Output/Recording Settings - Quick Review of all settings 38) 23:08 - Open game to record and target with hotkey (Game Capture Mode #3) 39) 23:39 - Start / Stop Recording 40) 23:44 - Opening sample video recording 41) 24:01 - Discussing Cpu usage of OBS while recording 42) 24:10 - How to troubleshoot bad recordings, stuttering, slow computer, etc.
wow. best knowledge. thank u for the insight! :D it was super knowledgabel and ez to start!!! yey now im recording omfg *super excited to rec my gameplay* eeek
Thank you, your video helped a lot. Very detailed. Subscribed~ Just to let some of you know, if you're having issues recording you may want to check to see if its because you're attempting to record the game in windowed mode. When I did fullscreen instead instantly I was able to record without any issues (I'm playing and recording a game that's on Steam).
Hi Jesseeverything, great video, incredibly informative, very clearly explained and visually tangible with all what was said. You gained a new subscriber based off this alone. I have one issue, I followed everything as you have but when I play my video back my voice audio doesn’t come out? If I press record with no gameplay and talk into my mic my video plays back my voice, when I record with gameplay and speak into my mic my voice isn’t played back/over the footage? Any suggestions, help or advice you would be greatly appreciated. Stay safe
Subbed! Nice video it helped me out a lot. What editing program do u use? Atm i'm using Sony Vegas. It would be great if i know the best setting for that program :-).
Use the hotkeys for "Start Recording" and "Stop Recording" near, but not at, the top. He set you up to have a non-working hotkey that doesn't record anything. You're welcome.

Hey Jess. It is my first time discovering your channel and this video and I was wondering if you can answer this question. When I start recording my video, things are perfectly fine, but after when I'm done recording and I watch it, it isn't the same. It would start off alright, but then it would start to lag, get slow, and freeze between. Is there anything that I could do to stop it?
Most likely your cpu is hitting 100%. Set your encoder to NVENC if possible (if you have an NVIDIA card). This will take most of the strain off of your cpu. If it's still lagging, try reducing the framerate to 30fps. If you have an AMD graphics card you can download a special plugin that gives you an option similar to NVENC but specifically built for AMD. What are your computer specs? If you have a decent rig, it's just a matter of balancing settings in your game as well as in OBS.
To add a face came add another source to your scene. Select "Video Capture Device". Click "create new", then select your webcam from the "Device" dropdown. Another word of advice....turn off any automatic settings on your camera, such as white balance, auto focus, etc. Also, you want your Exposure settings to be as low as possible, as your webcam has to work harder when it's higher, reducing your framerate.

Try running OBS in administrator mode. If that doesn't work, just record using window capture or desktop capture. It will use a little more resources, but the quality should be roughly equal.
In Step 4 I see "source" instead of "mode" and when I click on the drop down menu option I just get a blue line with a checkmark in it instead of 3 choices to select from. Do you have any idea what I'm doing wrong? We just started trying to record gameplay with OBS Studio yesterday and I could only get as far as recording audio but no video and I'm sure this critical game capture set up is probably the issue. Thanks for any specific direction you can provide!
I wanted to record some game play but the latest OBS version 25.0.8 always shows black screen while using game capture. It works using the window capture but doesn't work with the game capture feature. How can I fix this?
Hey JESSEverything, I got meself a problem... My game only works on 'capture specific window', but this is the only option where you can't hear my voice! What do I do?
This is by far, the best tutorial I've ever seen about this program
I agree with that!! This tutorial really helped me a ton
Yeah

When ever i watch the video it just freezes up in the first 2 seconds
you need to change the cpu setting lower and your video quality, this is because your computer isnt strong enough
thanks
thank you so much for this. I literally took notes while watching your video.
only video i found that addressed my stuttering issue. thank you

If you have an AMD graphics card you can download a special plugin that gives you an option similar to NVENC but specifically built for AMD. What are your computer specs? If you have a decent rig, it's just a matter of balancing settings in your game as well as in OBS.
OMG tysm, it was such a helpful tutorial but I just wanna ask how to get a face-cam???
To add a face came add another source to your scene. Select "Video Capture Device". Click "create new", then select your webcam from the "Device" dropdown. Another word of advice....turn off any automatic settings on your camera, such as white balance, auto focus, etc. Also, you want your Exposure settings to be as low as possible, as your webcam has to work harder when it's higher, reducing your framerate.

Try running OBS in administrator mode. If that doesn't work, just record using window capture or desktop capture. It will use a little more resources, but the quality should be roughly equal.
will obs pic up audio from two platforms at the same time, like if I had audio from discord and a game like yours through Steam?
Can we use that OBS on pc but connecting our mobile on it??i want to play with my phone but also I want some overlay on screen thats why I'm asking...
THANK YOU SO MUCH
Help me um when I record it just records a thing that says something about a source.
In Step 4 I see "source" instead of "mode" and when I click on the drop down menu option I just get a blue line with a checkmark in it instead of 3 choices to select from.
