  • Hey everyone! Today we're going to see how easy (or hard) it is to assemble your own P-bass. I haven't assembled an instrument in a long time, let's see how it goes!
    Get your Status Graphite neck here! www.status-graphite.com/status...
    They're actually very well priced.
    Parts list:
    Cherryburst ash P-bass body
    Status Graphite J-bass neck -
    Hipshot Ultralight tuners
    Hipshot A type bridge
    Bartolini P-bass Pickup
    250k pots
    Whoops! Forgot to resize the graphic at the end... not worth a reupload.

    Great work Lobster! I have bought and traded for several basses on your reviews and honest opinion. Thinking of doing a partial DIY project and your video is encouraging that a right brained, non-mechanical person may me able to do a lot of it myself.

    Nice looking Bass, I put a Modulus neck on a American Schecter P/J back in the 80's. Two things I remember about it was that it had no dead spots and it was very cold to the touch... About 1985...

    That was a really cool video and the bass looks and sounds great!! I strongly prefer the bass you built over the Mexican P bass and I actually really like the P bass. The tone of the Status P is complex and really stood out with the tone backed off and it just looks killer. I am aiming towards a natural finished darker wood, like goncalo alves, maybe. But the neck is a Moses graphite fretless Jazz bass neck. And the pickups will be a DeLano Hybrid MM in the bridge position and a blade type P-bass pickup in the traditional spot.

    A lot of people like their bass builds to feature necks that need adjustment less often. Obviously graphite is pretty much never going to need adjustment (does this one even have a truss rod?) but I wonder if roasted maple tends to be more stable as reputed-or perhaps it depends on the particular piece of roasted maple and how it is cut.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  3 роки тому +3

      Great comment! I would think that each individual roasted maple neck probably has some variance in weight and structural stability (though the roasting process does improve that) based on wood being wood. Carbon fiber probably has much less variance from example to example in terms of density and whatnot. Honestly, I've had this neck for like 9 years and it used to be on my daily driver franken-J. I could leave that thing sitting for a couple years, pick it up again, and it would be in tune and exactly how I left it. Status makes amazing necks, and the prices have improved now that the USD and GBP aren't as far apart as they once were.

    Q1: is there foam or something on the bottom of the pickups to push them up?
    Q2: tapewounds, right? If so, not really a fair comparison with the MIM Fender P-bass.

    • @LowEndLobster
      @LowEndLobster  3 роки тому +2

      Honestly, I forget. I have the body right buried under a pile of bass stuff (this project is returning, don't worry haha). Strings on this were black beauties, as opposed to the original strings on the MIM (the ones that I bought it with, trying to emulate the "noob" bassist buying a bass online and not knowing to change the strings).

      The DIY P has DR Black Beauties and the MIM P has the strings it came with when I got it a month or so ago. Not sure if I should change em of not. Trying to emulate the "average" bass with the MIM.

      TBH, I got this neck like 10 years ago and had a local luthier do it for me. I do believe you can drill straight into them though without issue to install the tuners, nothing special is needed. I would confirm that with Status however, but I do believe they mention that in their documentation.

    Hi lobster, I can hear the wooden neck has a warmer thicker sound, but would you say having a graphite neck on your bass results in a thinner sound?
    I don't mind a glassier and crisper synthetic tone, but I don't want to lose the thickness and overall bass and low end frequencies. When people say graphite necks lack warmth, do they also mean the low end thick sounding frequencies?
