I love that House's british voice is just Hugh's but exaggerated, and yet he still makes it sound like house is pretending. Such a legend of an actor.
It's honestly insane that he's a British actor playing an American doing a British accent
Reminds me of an episode of looney tunes.
The man who did the voices for daffy and bugs had to play bugs doing a daffy impression and daffy doing a bugs impression.
He did it in one take.
I actually was really wishing he was going to do his real accent during that scene, and then make a joke about how it was stupid 😅
@@CroissantCreates that would have been great! He didn't really do _his_ accent, just a posh, British upper-class-twit-of-the-year accent (yes, a Monty Python reference). I'm always amazed at how many accents Britain has for such a comparatively small area.
He used it often in the days of fry and laurie
So caring of him not exposing the mother for calling social services to her son
It didn't happen, the writers made it up.
Being a jerk to the son in that moment has got to be the nicest thing he's ever done 😅
@@Cactusbop no way I thought this was a documentary
@@GaslightingIsEvil Yup, 100% proof that he cares so much more than people think. He'll happily have this kid hate him forever, because the alternative is creating a potentially irreparable rift between the kid and his mother.
Everybody lies, House is no exception. The problem in life isn't that people lie, it's that we lie about the wrong things. This was the case of lying about the right thing.
I love that being a good mother saved her. Without her rational decision to give up her child, they wouldn't have suspected that her diagnosis was false.
This is why I hate psychosis.

I like the ending of this episode. The Mother finally returns to sanity, and the son finally can go back to being a kid after being the adult during all this time
You never really go back to being a kid when you have to be the adult in the family for a while.
He'll never be able to go back.
There is no coming back from that.
Once you're the adult for your parent, you're at the point of no return.

I think this is the most affectionate we've seen House. House really had a heart for this patient. Even Dr. House has a heart.
i remember a series of patients as he was facing down vogler. they really got to him.
This has gotta be at least the tenth short I've seen this kinda comment written on the dude doesn't get nearly as much credit for having a heart as he clearly should
I think he liked her because unlike other patients who lie all the time and the puzzle is figuring out the lies, she was trying desparetly to tell him the truth while being unable to. Everybody lies, but the only lie she told was to protect her son, against her own self interest

Wilson: "...didn't we just leave your office?"
House: "I like to walk." 😌
Wilson: Since when? 😒
Me: 😂🤣
I think he just likes having an audience for his epiphanies.
Oh I thought that office looks familiar 🤔🇺🇲
Literal truth. There's an episode where House is out in the hallway and keeps popping his head in to the conference room to suggest diagnoses; Wilson says, "He likes to walk; it distracts him from the pain".
A few months ago, someone in the comments pointed out that House and the team had just walked around the corridor and were back at the same point where they started, I had not noticed it, now every clip I watch notice they do the same all the time, whenever they come out of a door, they start walking, and get back to the starting place LOL 😆😆😆 maybe the writers thought it was funny to make it obvious 🤣🤣🤣
He played happy birthday to himself. Even if he presents as harsh and cold hearted, he still wants to be cared for.
Another parallel he had with the young boy. After he tricked the kid into admitting his age while looking at the x-ray, the kid mentioned how his birthday was a few days prior and within the time frame of the episode, House also had his birthday…secretly of course lol. Except, his true friend Wilson remembers at the end of the episode which he grudgingly is visibly annoyed but deep down appreciates. House is a piece of work psychologically.
@@MaKaye55Cameron knew and snitched, Wilson didn’t know all on his own
House lying to the kid about him calling CPS so it wouldn’t ruin the new mother-son relationship they just recovered…that’s so sweet and unlike him ♥️😂
I wouldn't say it's sweet or unlike him. He has a code against being a tattletale and if you notice, he NEVER rats anyone out unless there is literally no other choice.
I think most people miss the last scene where he realizes that once the mom is cured and becomes "rational" again, she becomes another liar (the motto of the show is "everyone lies") and in a way validates Dr. House's lack of trust in humanity. We're all boring creatures who only care about our own wellbeing, or something like that.
he blackmails a doctor into surgery because he's cheating on his wife and after he tells her anyway... bit of a tattletale
He kept hoping she would tell the truth, but she didn't. Just another person who disappointed him.
Its pretty in character because he actually respects them both. He doesnt respect other people.
It has nothing to do with disappointment. I think many people who watch House watch it because they are actually mental and it helps them cope. Simple truth is, House is rational, and thus strongly skewed towards a utilitarian point of view. Stating the truth would do nothing for any party involved. It would absolve House, but House doesnt care, so no utility. If you notice through the rest of the show , House stands for the truth while standing for a higher value, thus raising an issue of principle and integrity. If that is not an issue, anything goes.
That being said, House is human.
Bottom line: Sweet...naaah. Unlike him...HELL NAH
Wilson: "Isn't it your birthday around now?"
House earlier: *playing happy birthday" on the piano*

I just now realized how much this hurt Chase.
Knowing Chase's backstory, you realize when he sees Mrs Palmeri with her son, him regretting that he couldn't save his own mother. His own situation with his mother is part of the reason his diagnoses all revolved around alcohol, and why he gave the kid that little pep talk just before social services closed in.

I love how House likes to say he didn't care, if he truly didn't care he would have straight ratted out the mom.
I kind of wonder, the kid wouldn't be nearly as mad at his mom if he was told it was her who called so he wouldn't have to put himself through all this, why keep it a secret?
@@G.F.SF55 it's better the mother tells him when she's ready I assume
No he doesn't care. So that's why he doesn't tell the kid. He doesn't care how he feels about him. He tells the kid the truth then he'll witness a scene. Better to get rid of them even if he hates him.
@@G.F.SF55 he wanted her to tell her son. He wanted her to be the better person, but she just disappointed him.
Hugh Laurie pretending to be an American pretending to be English is glorious.
The way he chokes out “You’re welcome” at 8:13 is a fantastic little moment of acting. House is so uncomfortable with praise, both giving and accepting, and responds to her message thanking him only after (a) hearing it, (b) being reminded of it, and (c) suffering an awkward silence while waiting for the elevator to get to the ground floor. It was the last thing he wanted to do, and the kid really bailed him out by telling him he was a jerk and giving him an excuse to make up a lie about Cuddy.
"I just wanted you out of my life...that's why I had Dr Cuddy call Social Services"
If Cuddy had heard about that, she probably would've had a go at House about it, and then accepted House's motivations for lying, and end up thanking him, such was the dynamic between her and House.
House was clever. If the son followed up with Social Services and found out that a woman had called, the son would have known it wasn't House and been suspicious. Saying that Cuddy called covered that eventuality.
if Cameron had found out... she'd have told the kid.
House picked an easy way of telling off when the son said he turned him to social services
the better way would be to tell that basically the only reason his mother is now healthy is because SHE called the social security and THAT was the sign that everybody who diagnosed schizophrenia was wrong
You think i care about you that much?
Would have been the perfect reply i think.
I'm confused so much by this episode, I'm sure I don't have this story straight like most any other one from this series. I think you mean "services" not "security", am I wrong?

the part at 4:15 is why i love the first season…. it’s so natural to see them struggle to think of the names of the diseases off the top of their heads.
don’t get me wrong, i love the later seasons too but they start to sound like medical dictionaries when they are always able to immediately name specific diseases
I guess after a while they're used to naming off things haha
The instant recall thing doesn't work so well when you are dragged back into the clinics after midnight.
pretty sure they only presented it that way because the disease shared a name with a major character and they didn't want to confuse anyone
It's never lupus
Also, House checking medical books and consulting with other doctors became less common in later seasons.
Likewise, I love the later seasons, but I enjoy these little details in the earlier ones.

House is particularly interested in this case because of the son-mother dynamic. It's revealed later that he was always close to his mother--and that he couldn't be with his father, because of the latter's personality and treatment of him. House recognizes how the son in the episode rises against the odds, something that he has also had to do while growing up. Interesting connection right there.
I still find it funny to think how few people who watched House actually knew Hugh Laurie was English.
Not only that, but that Hugh played the idiotic foppish character on the British TV show, Blackadder.
@@dawntraveler42 And a lot more besides, check out "A bit of Fry And Laurie" where he's with another genius, Stephen Fry
If they didn't know that, they missed out on a lot of great humour from him and Stephen Fry!
The British (and Aussies) grew up watching American TV. That could explain why they are better at American accents than we are at British.
Interestingly, I, an American, knew no one who didn’t know that he was a famous English actor/musician. I guess we just run in different crowds. Like, I could care less when Diana died, but when Toshiro Mifune did, I sent out emails to a bunch of friends.
House not telling the son that the mother called social services was one of the nicest things he could do.
It cost him nothing. He didn't expect them to have an ongoing relationship. The woman gets to be brave and not suffer from the reveal to her son. Plus House throws Cuddy under the bus. He told Cuddy to call social services. Let him go and complain to her later or hold the grudge against her.
House was reading to a patient
Let's let that sink in for a moment

They named her Lucy (lucid). The clue was always there!

Lucidity isn’t exclusive to people without mental illnesses
@@DeathnoteBB It does exclude the specific diagnosis she had been given though, as was explained in the episode.
@@terrenusvitae I’ve known people with schizophrenia who were capable of selflessness and fully lucid. It’s a show from 2004, they’re just not accurate about a stigmatized mental illness
7:14 Chase is morose because he had to spend his youth taking care of his alcoholic mother. It's also why he presumed the mother's cirrhosis was from alcoholism (although to be fair it is 99% of the time). Lucas is getting a happy ending to Chase's story which he never got.
My bet is Hugh as a professional actor loved the richness of character of Dr. House. He probably enjoyed every minute of it.
Maybe the first couple seasons... He was away from his family during the filming, the limping was actually becoming painful since he was using one leg more than the other. He said that if the show hasn't ended on the eighth season he would have quit.

House during his career: cured the incurable, saved a CIA agent, assisted the Italian Mafia, made the clinically unhinged sane, saved people from their own self-inflicted dooms, proved the unthinkable, risked life and limb in pursuit of diagnosis, and countless other things, and yet people still doubt him till "the end". No wonder he quit.
Yeah, except he said many times in the series that he needed people questioning him. That treating him as if he was right all the time was something he explicitly avoided when he selected his team.
@@shadows_star While an environemnt that combative would get taxing after while it did prove effective and he certainly inspired his fellow colleagues to keep questioning.
Well his first diagnosis was wrong, since it wasn't Vitamin K
He only quit because of Wilson. He and Wilson toured the country with fake identities, Holmes and Watson, and solved a mystery a town before moving on... and when Wilson died House changed identities once again, this time becoming a shrink by the name of Chance.

Sadly very realistic. Especially if one Doctor wrote you off already or you present with visibly “crazy” symptoms. Same with believing you’re lying about abusing drugs. I swear some Doctors need to step down.
The acting in this show was consistently quite good
Scrubs did a great episode around the diagnosis of Wilson's disease. The writing that is done for shows like these are amazing. The end when House took the blame for calling social services was heroic n selfless.

The way she read the poetry during her treatment was as though she was narrating her time during the treatment which is poetic in itself...
I like the “madness of King George” reference as it may allude (intentionally or not) to Hugh Laurie’s time on Blackadder. Hugh played the Prince Regent, the son of King George III, who had porphyria and was “mad” as a result. The British accent that Hugh uses in this episode is fairly similar to the one he used when playing the character.
There’s no accent he “used” he just IS British. He’s using an accent for House
Classic House, not only would he cure what ailed ya, he would also make you better, loved these seasons.
It always bothered me how Forman would dismiss every correct idea because the disease was rare. Like dude, you work for a doctor who only takes the weirdest, most difficult to explain cases. Often times people who have seen a dozen other doctors and haven’t been able to find a diagnosis. Of course it’s something rare! If it wasn’t some rare and difficult to explain the patient wouldn’t be in your ward.
But of course the actor who plays Foreman was great. It just seems like writers just didn’t have much for him to say sometimes and defaulted to “IT CAN’T BE THAT! That’s rare!”.
Thankfully I was 12 when my Wilson’s disease was discovered completely by chance . I now take meds daily and liver biopsies every few years. I am one of two patient’s that my dr has ever seen .

@@roku401 nothing that dramatic. It can be fatal if undiagnosed, however it is very treatable. I just have to get periodic blood draws to get rid of excess iron. The arthritic damage to my joints is permanent though. Before 1996 (I believe that's the year) there was no way to see if you had the mutated genes, Death is usually how families found out. One famous person had it that I know of, Ernest Hemingway. If you know anyone in your family who has it, you should at least get tested for the mutation, just to be safe as it's hereditary. (I think there are ways it can occur otherwise, but I'm no expert). Three reasons it goes undiagnosed as long as it does is symptoms get dismissed to aging, mot Doctors rarely see cases of it and don't actively pursue it as a diagnosis, and the last one is the test for iron levels in the blood was removed from yearly physicals as a cost savings from insurance companies. The last one is the real kicker because it would trigger the test for the gene mutation. None of my original 4 doctors thought to check for it on their own by the way. I found out a family member had it and asked for the test myself. That is one hell of a scary thought, isn't it? PS: That dyalisis he ordered was probably due to organ failure because iron gets deposited in the bodies organs and joints over the years. I was lucky and found out before it got that far.

One of the best cases/episodes in my opinion.
My aunt has schizophrenia, she's not off the wall all the time. She does have clear moments, they're just not as common for her as for everyone else. She recognizes when she or someone else is treated badly or if they're in pain and I remember one time she called my mother out over something (and my aunt was in the right). And my aunt's diagnosis is far from mild.
