Brings back childhood memories of Granada TV. We had a Rediffusion system so we got both ATV and Granada. As a kid, I found Walton's theme quite creepy but rousing at the same time.
No, Lionel always turns his nose up at Yorkshire Television as I used to work there and he can't stand me. He is very good friends with Redvers Kyle though - they used to work together at Associated-Rediffusion.
gramule you're correct, and the creator of this video is correct too. The version you refer to was used between July and December *1968*, this one was used from early *1969*, when this logo was introduced, until November that year when Granada began colour transmissions, though I feel a modified version of this was used for a few early years of colour.
I remember the Granada startup from about 1971/72 was Walton piece starting with the ITA slide divided horizontally into white and black halves with the ITA logo and the star at the top and words Granada Television at one side on black bottom part. The ITA slide would then switch to the standard static blue and yellow Granada G slide about a minute from the end of the music.
I believe we are both correct because a) I have a copy of this original film from Granada's archive and b) I've spoken to numerous people who watched it broadcast at the time. The two lines logo you refer to introduced the North-West only service in 1968, and lasted about a year.
Granada was the most boring of all the itv idents as it had no jingle or animation. Although they did produced some great programs. Should have had a better ident though instead of a blue background and just Granada and the G pointing upwards. All the other itv idents had music and animation. My favorites were ATV ,Anglia, and Thames.
The original logo said it came “From The North” - living as I did in Middlesbrough, where did it come from - Scotland? No! Manchester! That’s the SOUTH!
Lovely piece of music by William Walton.

The authority voice is the late Don Murray Henderson

Bit of ATV envy in that crescendo-and-logo-formup at 4:00? Right there with the "Sound and Vision" era..
Obviously Lionel didn't make the grade for Yorkshire Television, hence him referring to the first programme of the day as "something cheap"... ;o)
I must admit I totally misread thIs to start with and thought you were going to a mock versIon of Countdown from 1969

"Granada had to make do with WilLiam Walton" !!
The aspect ratio of this works perfectly on my shiny new Samsung Galaxy S III - which I assume has a 16:9 form factor.
HI dave- how would this start up look with the longer version of the prelude?
okay I have cobbled up a mock up of it. See what everyone thinks.

I think that's because they had their priorities right - the programme is more important than the ident.
I have recordings of All the itv start ups from 1955 to when they finished, all companies, inc TWW & Teledu Cymru, southern , both Westwards etc
The early Granada logo was animated. No music though. It must be on UA-cam somewhere.

5:16 YORKSHIRE
Isn't THAT ironic.
