I miss social media apps being just cat memes, kids being stupid, and actually good videos, now we have "skibidi toilet" brainrot. There's plenty of people who still have videos with depth like kyle hill, kursgesagt and yes, mark rober. But the issue is, social media apps (even youtube) value quantity over quality, and it's horrible.
I'm afraid to report that the decline of gen Alpha has nothing to do with the internet. My cousin's kid (who does not even go to daycare yet) only gets one hour screentime a day, of monitored content from Netflix, and somehow she has all the traits of the new generation. The girl insisted she wanted to draw, then just sat down with the pen uncapped in her hand hovering above the paper. Then she would hand it to me and tell me what to draw. She was more capable a year ago.

while i agree with the premise that social media has had an overall negative effect on mental and physical health, you can't just make youtube or even yourself seem like a holy grail. every platform has good quality content. every platform has hot garbage. can you like youtube more than other platforms? yes. can you make it seem like that's the only source of information on social media? no. there are high quality creators in every nook and cranny, you just have to find them.
I wholeheartedly agree with this. I think everyone gets so up at arms about other social media platforms simply because UA-cam has been around the longest. People bash tiktok as if Vine wasn't mostly the same thing as it. You have to search for good content on any social media and weed out the crap. That's just how it is
The only argument that can be made towards snapchat is privacy. but even then there are too many people with modified versions of the app, and/or actively are screen recording for that to be a valid argument anymore. The worst offender in all cases is the trends. Some of these trends are borderline lethal. And then theres these kids trying to replicate these trends on their own for just one more like. it makes me wonder if we should actually consider banning these platforms, as they clearly do not seem to care about the safety of their content creators. Yes, it is the cc's fault for doing it in the first place. but it is up to the platform to prevent it from spreading, by warning/otherwise punishing the cc for posting such content. just like how posting NSFW on UA-cam is met with strict and severe consequences. Which should prevent others from wanting to risk their lives as well for just that one like.
As for youtube. It pains me to say that UA-cam is also falling off a bit lately. While I agree that some of the best and enjoyble content can only be found on UA-cam, the platform itself is also starting to become a host for content farms that just regurgitate extremely unfunny and oversexualized content to the younger audience just for the sake of likes. I try to keep my feed clean, but sometimes I see a thumbnail of a character from a series clearly meant for children. but the character is just straight up performing a sexual act. It hurts me to see this kind of content take over the last haven of good content which is why I hold those channels that actually do produce good content very dear to me.

Everything about the monetisation and the censorship is so incredibly far off from early-mid 2010s UA-cam that I'd hardly call it the same platform anymore.

It’s crazy to think I was hesitant to click on this video because I saw that it was 4 minutes long. When 3 years ago I would’ve been beside myself to see a video under 20 minutes. Social media has ruined my attention span. maybe even yours too, I wonder how many people actually read all of this 🤷♂️

as someone in gen z, on one hand i think a lot of modern content is kinda shit. and gen alpha content is stupid
on the other hand a lot of other gen z memes arent exactly sophisticated humor
i think retricted internet acsess until about 13 years old, and the fact kids just dont watch memes and most content.
even though i currently know internet culture i didnt even know what a meme is until i was about 13-14. when i first got acsess to screens it was for 45 minutes a day on my dad's computer, then i got a phone when i was 10, and i didnt start really using the internet until i it puberty. even though i watched youtube and played some video games i didnt actually interact with other people and watch anything besides minecraft videos i wasnt "ruined" by internet culture
on the other hand a couple of months ago i were at a family meeting and my 9ish year old second cousin spent 90% on his ipad because his parents let him.
as long as parents keep their kids at check (and most parents are pretty good in my opinion) everything is alright and this is overinflated
as for youtube, its far better than other social medias but can be just as shallow
the way i see it, on youtube you can choose how you use tha platform, what you watch, and how you interact with people. on other social medias its not "destroying your brain" unless you really are addicted. and i dont think most users are. i dont use any social media besides youtube, but im not better than most people (or kids in my school) just because i mostly use a social media thats slightly less brain rot.
edit: i also sometimes post on reddit to disscuss video games/tv shows i enjoy.
Being and/or being real isn't easy in nowadays, when the views and trends matters more than actual time-spending worthy content, and it involves almost everything on the internet, gaming, art, political opinions; I mean, where did the good and authentic people go?
Also, the authenticity was very clear in the content from early 2010s, right? You, know, when you could make any jokes and it didnt matter if someone would get offended, and get massive reporting
Taking jokes as real menaces or personal attacks, it is what was getting more and more massive everywhere, to the point that the platforms themselves censor content that "doesnt respect others oponions" or "Its offensive, i feel offended, *report*"
Not only that, even telling the most basic truth became a "hate speech", like the biology, the freaking elemenatry school biology, its absurd
They want that all people in the world fit in their exigences and not make anyone feel bad or sad; an unreal, dangerous and impossible fantasy, but they try with all their forces to make it true, and then.. we have to support those causes, or get the consecuences of not doing like, from banning, to going to jail
I hope this kind of 'thinking revolution' gets big, grows good, and make the world less strange and sick, not using masks anymore, unless is for another damn pandemic

This is like one step above short form content. If you are going to say that UA-cam is so great because of longer content, you’re doing a bad job of representing that by putting out content that is barely longer than the longest TikTok video length.

dude, im sorry but i'll be honest with you.. you're yapping. not to be hating, i used to think the same EXACT way as you but it really isnt that bad. UA-cam, in my honest opinion has had the worst of it. Seriously, youtube is in THE WORST state it has ever been in. Countless anti-consumer updates have been released to this platform, most of the latest updates have just been for money, or have been genuinely horrible additions. Instagram IS a platform for sharing. Maybe its different for certain communities, but i see enough people posting just to post. Not for likes, not for comments, just to share their skills or their creativity. And sure, maybe short form content does have some sort of effect on people's attention span, but it has allowed for new forms of sharing content amongst communities, it has allowed people to feel included in their own community and it can genuinely bring people together due to how specialised and personalised the alogrithms tend to be. And not to mention that youtube also has short form content, and its probably the worst one out of all the other platforms.
