I’m someone who was born in 1967 and when I was younger my parents would regularly take me to Hemsby and the Norfolk Coast for Holidays. I remember going on Holiday in Hemsby and staying in a Chalet behind the 3 Dunes, which you had to climb up and over to get to the Beach, memory serves me that there was a white staircase on the middle of the Dunes. We Holidayed in places like Hemsby and Happisburgh, wherever my Mum knew someone who had a Holiday Home that we could Rent for " Mates Rates ". The Cliff at Happisburgh at the Stairs that led down to the Beach is where I proposed to my then Girlfriend ( about 1985 ) and I can remember hiding behind the Wooden Sea Defences on the Beach probably when I was 15 and doing Beach Fishing. It’s quite Scary seeing how much of the Coast has disappeared and quite amazing that nobody has done anything in the past to help protect the Coastline !. The UK used to have Groins on all the Beaches but these were never kept up to date, these used to trap the sand,I’m sorry but a lot of the problems with the coastal erosion should have been tackled by the prospective Villages and Towns, rather than expecting central government to do it,those resorts have made a huge fortune over the years in Tourism,so why didn’t they invest some of that money into protecting their own backyards ? Greed I’m afraid is the answer. It’s always somebody’s else’s problem and responsibility, why spend our money ?!!!🤷♂️. Well, now they probably understand why they should have done something when they had the chance to 🤷♂️🤷♂️. Instead of during the 80’s spending a Million £ it is now going to Cost Billions of £ and still it will erode at a alarming rate and so why should the Taxpayers have to pay the Bill ??. The people who bought property on the Coast were aware of the Erosion but they buried their Heads in the Sand and expected the Government to Foot the Bill ? The local Council and the Towns people themselves considering how much Revenue the majority of them would have been getting ( Amusements,Holiday homes and one of the largest Holiday Parks ( Richardsons ) would have generated a significant amount of ££. Pontins had one of the largest Holiday Parks in the UK in Hemsby and that would have generated Millions of £ for Pontins but also for the Local Tourism economy ! And was that Money reinvested in the local Area or was it spent on Whatever the people who owned the property/parks/Hotels and Pubs wanted ? . You have to ask yourself as well if these people KNEW that eventually the Sea was going to take their Homes why didn’t they buy somewhere else away from the erosion ? Common Sense should have prevailed 🤷♂️. If you Buy a House next to the Sea it might have problems,if you buy a home next to the River it might flood,if you buy a home near the Railway it might be noisy ???. It’s a Crying Shame that all these people are losing their Homes but they have reaped the benefits and unfortunately things do go wrong
I do feel sorry for the people affected at Hemsby, but people have been holiday in there since before World War II and is a very popular holiday destination but they done nothing to protect their own own coastline in 50 years they’ve done zero 100% nothing themselves the local council the county council nothing in this video. They even mention how many millions of pounds worth of holiday makers money piles into Hemsby and they invested zero in their own defences they could’ve done a moderate amount every eight years and developed a nice sea defence across the front section where all the holiday homes were the lifeboat station is and so on, but they never bothered until it was too late and now they’re mad that nobody will help the holiday homes which are falling into the sea are actually on private land the company that owns that land they won’t do anything either to protect their own land. They just happy taking the money and running and not investing in their own longevity by putting any defences in against the sea. Everybody is at fault through generations of people. Nobody did anything until quite recently when they realise oh bugger we’re in trouble too late should this 50 years ago and carried on upgrading it or adding to it?
