My top tip : Don’t just stay in the saddle all the while but dance on the pedals from time to time. Relieves the pressure in your nether regions but also in the back and shoulders.
I've been trying to concentrate on dropping my shoulders down from my ears while riding. Also doing exercises that pinch my shoulder blades together to strengthen my upper back. It's been helping a lot.
Is there anything specific that would cause you to shrug the shoulders while riding? I seem to have the same problem and end up with numb fingers. I'm not sure it's related.
Perfect timing! Just bought my first ever road bike (actually gravel, but still way closer to road than my old MTB) yesterday, now playing with seat adjustments trying to find most comfortable position. This video helps me understand what to aim for.
Besides adjusting your bike , posture is very important if you are going for longer distance riding , check this out , it is very helpful to me: ua-cam.com/video/QKkPyWNMBkk/v-deo.html , I don’t know this guy but he gave the exact answer I was searching for.
This is great. I've been doing a stretch where I'm riding 50 miles a day and shoulder/neck pain has been an issue that I wasn't expecting. I really don't know how to find out what bar length, saddle height, or saddle angle would work best for me. Unfortunately, many of the shops in my area are booked with appointments so I cannot take it in to see if I could have that shown to me. I'm sure there's a guide somewhere I can work off of.
I'm a bigger guy, 6' 190 pounds on a 32" waist - so, a pretty broad shouldered 190 pounds. I'm also getting a bit older at 43 years old. Not as flexible or resilient as I was in my 20s. Discovered that the stock 42cm bar on my 56cm emonda was simply too narrow - made my left shoulder cramp up on long rides. Put an enve 46cm bar on there - instant relief.
I never had pain whilst cycling, I spent nearly 200 hours to fit my bike 100% I spent more money on the right seat, and the right bike. When you do road biking, you have to spend a lot of time experimenting. Trial and error till you reach the sweet spot. I experimented a lot with saddle angle. I never wanted to put too much pressure on my perineum. Now riding my bike is heaven.
Si and Lloydy are great but Hank and Manon are outstanding - really seem like they’re helping out there mates and not presenting to strangers, clearly just lovely people. Don’t go anywhere!
Good video. Ill have to do those neck exercises. I notice that I get more shoulder /neck pain when im not feeling the ride. If I get a couple flats or something that stress makes everything stiff.
Getting stiff, almost cramped between my neck and shoulder joint is the only pain I couldn't learn to avoid. It happens always on the right, pretty fast about 40' into the ride but then it stays the same (it's bareable). Some say it's because I work a lot on the PC using the mouse with my right hand which keeps my shoulder always lifted and there's a slight constant strain which is then aggrevated. Perhaps. I learned to live with it. It only gets worse when I'm especially tense on the bike like hard climbing routes or going very fast, gripping the bars too tight to keep myself low and leaning forward. But I do both rarely.
The new kit is awesome, I like it better than the new red one. Good advice on the neck pain too. I had a bike fit before ordering my new bike so there were only minor saddle adjustments when I received my new Orbea Avant.
Ok... here's another tip based on personal experience: Cycling bib shorts can be a good fit in the most important areas, whilst having straps that are too short. This might not be noticeable at first, but having elastic straps press down with unnecessarily high force on your shoulders for several hours may cause stiffness and pain in shoulder and neck areas - specifically in the upper trapezius area. Solutions: (1) buy bib shorts with adjustable straps; (2) have the straps lengthened by someone who knows their way around a sewing machine; (3) shorts without straps.
If you want to be truly aero, you have to adapt to it even after a proper bike fit. Try adapt to a more and more aggressive position by first "slamming" your stem and riding in the drops. Then try using an even longer slammed stem, but only if you can get used to it without getting too sore. Eventually, you'll find your balance between comfort & a sustained aero position. Keep it up @Manon @Hank @GCN.
I have nary a tip, but I do have a query. I've been riding for 60 years, on the same bike for the last 25 years. Only in the last, say, half year have a started to suffer escalating shoulder soremess when I do my daily 4-miles commute. My question: why this recent onset in pain when I was so fine, so long?
I found a few weight exercises in the gym helps my arms and shoulders as I am worn out from 23 years of driving tractors in vineyard rows. I can now ride for more than an hour and not be in pain. Thankfully the vineyard machines had power steering.
I'd say if this is a long ride, do similar exercises (to the ones shown, but not compromising safety) while on the bike. Stretch shoulders by lifting them up to ears and down, rotational movements, change position on the bike (hoods, drops, tops, seated, standing). All that helps
This helped solving my shoulder pain problems on longer rides: don't wear the braces of your shorts any more around your shoulders (just keep them around your middle or buy shorts without braces or buy shorts with very wide or looser braces or just buy an aeropack).
This video reminds me of my longish rides, I've the exact same issue. Too much fat, inflexibility. Perhaps moving the saddle a bit in front is the solution? That or a shorter stem. Thanks for sharing the exercises.
Great advice. Although I lost focus at 1:39 when Manon pronounced tortoise as tor- toys. Had to hit repeat 3 times and then became so smitten with the pronunciation I couldn’t focus, until she pushed Hank over. You guys are great! Keep the awesome content coming! I just hit the relax feature on my Fitbit in the middle of the ride during a snack/water break. 😂
Also relaxing your face helps with not cramping. Its some sort of vagus nerve subconscious thing. For people without drop handlebars horns on the ends can help to change the angle of the shoulder to open them up.
What is it when i get achy upper left calf but nothing on right calf ever? Also the thumb pad of my left hand kills me and nothing in the right hand ever! Any advice? Am right dominant squash professional so maybe thats why I have no issues on my right side but still whats wrong with the bike setup for me? Please help its killing my 25 mile rides!!!!!!!! Thanks love the videos best on the net by far.
a bit controversial for GCN but the best way I found to avoid sore shoulders is to get a flat bar! not the crazy ones from the mountain bikes but a modest maybe 540mm width one with some straight bar shifter/brakes does wonders to reliving my youth
Replace your handlebar tape every now and then! And ideally, wear gloves. That reduces the vibration and helps with numb hands, but also sore shoulders :)
A sore left neck is the only thing that's stopping me from doing longer rides, my flexibility on my left-back side is not as good as on my right, and something tells me handle -bar width is a factor, going to try a 38cm soon.
With relaxing, riding a mountain bike will help with this. You have to learn to relax and let the bike move a bit underneath you especially when desending.
Hi Manon & Hank cool video. I practice yoga as well as teach it, and Hank you really need to work on your tri-pod headstand, but thats why they call it a practice and not a perfect.
Back in the 60s, at about 30 miles into a time trial, I would get a debilitating lower back pain. My only recourse was to get off the drops and onto the tops, thereby losing my aero position. I didn't have the nous to think of doing back exercises or yoga, let alone get a bike fit. (I don't even think the latter existed back then.)
I get crippling pain at the base of my neck on the left side after almost exactly 1 hour of riding, no amount of stretching can stop it. I'm going to try a smaller frame to reduce the reach, otherwise I'm stumped other than something actually wrong with my shoulder/neck.
I am actually having problems with my neck since I started cycling for weight loss , I have a bike that fits me and and I dont feel uncomfortable on it , I noticed that it is from cycling when I was sick for two weeks and I havent been on my bike for that time , after a few days of cycling I started having problems and pain with my neck , both muscles and bones. If anyone has any advice or anything knows why and what could it be it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
I'm vetting some wicked lower back pain on rides where I push max power - at around an hour my back right above my glutes starts to seize up. Hurts. Any suggestions? Doesn't happen on moderate to tempo rides - just threshold stuff. And only if I sustain it for a while.
Bib shorts that are too short. The straps will exert a constant downward pressure on your shoulders and over time it can cause a lot of pain. So, after bike fit is proper fit of your bib shorts. Size them according to your height.
Several commenters have commented that "it's illegal to cycle two abreast". In fact it is perfectly legal to cycle two abreast, but it's illegal to cycle more than two abreast and it's illegal on narrow roads and when cycling around bends. It's also legal for a cyclist to ride in the middle of a lane, known as the Primary Position or "taking the lane", e.g. if the road is narrow and it’s unsafe for a driver to pass you, or if you need to avoid riding in the ‘door zone’ past parked cars. I got aggressively beeped by a car recently for taking the lane for a short stretch of road; obviously that intolerant driver is not a road cyclist. Many drivers who don't do road cycling have no tolerance for cyclists and some even harbour jealousy. Also recently a camper van driver approaching behind me was too impatient to wait for an oncoming car to pass before giving a wide berth to overtake me, so overtook me and passed the oncoming car at the same time. At about 70 km/h. From my outer elbow to the passing camper van was about 50 cm. Such drivers should be made go back to driving school. Drivers who do also cycle have a tolerant mindset and demeanour that you can see in their driving behaviour.
Highway code is based mostly guidance and common sense though , it's not just legality, tbh if we're holding up other traffic unnecessarily on our bikes were probably doing it wrong
I always get sore elbows!!! Not sure exactly why.. I broke my right arm at the elbow a few year ago rock climbing.. so did always think maybe I could get it there.. but I get it on both!! Really tight and sore
try wearing a brace on the wrist. Had this problem and consulted a physio about it. Keeping the wrist properly aligned helps to keep the rest of the arm in the best possible position. So a even a very slightly bent wrist will push the elbow into a "weaker" position so it can't handle the strain of braking or keeping you in an upright position for a long time. I wore a brace on my wrist for about 6-9 months of riding when I started riding almost daily and it solved the issue. I do not need it anymore as the muscles in my wrist have gotten stronger along with some core work to alleviate the pressure on the arms on longer rides.
I switch between my weekend/riding with my mates road bike, the bike on my wahoo trainer, and my commuter bike and this causes all sorts of lower back pain. My road bike is more aero. I think it's mostly my commuter bike which has a slightly different position. Any suggestions?
I ride my endurance bike on the weekend and my old road bike when I need to leave it locked up somewhere. I found changing the tilt slightly on my handlebars made both bikes more comfortable. The hand numbness stopped but I noticed that I wasn't sliding on the saddle anymore so less backache.
If you are on the tall side or have a long body/shorter legs, you may find bib short shoulder straps too short and tight, leading to shoulder pain. Sadly it appears the only solution is to see in extra bits
On long rides I suffer from pain in my left shoulder but never on the right side. I ride two bikes, a Trek 920 which I use as a touring bike and a Domane SL5 for road riding. Same problem on both bikes but very different setups. The problem starts to arise on both bikes after about 2 to 2 and half hours of riding and gets progressively worse as I ride longer. Any further advice would be appreciated.
oh man, thanks for this! i literally had neck pain while riding a while ago, my vision blurred and I had to lay down a bit literally lay down on the side of the road thinking "DONT GO INTO THE LIGHT", anyway.... a heart doctor's appointment I believe is in order. my mom have a heart issue and I can only take precautions whether it's hereditary or not
heart issue, neck pain and vision blurring doesn't sound very logical as cause and effect. I do think you need to check that out though, thats not good in any situation. It sounds more like a spine issue that it could cause the blurred vision and neck pain but let the experts look at it for sure.
@@pr0faker thank you, brother! i'm no chiropractor but I did some research and the cause narrows down to multiple issue and one of them is spine issue. I used to be a web developer means sitting hours to an end (I did that for about 3 years, and in those 3 years I kinda leave out any cycling which was my hobby since high school). i will check it tho!
Hank the only way for me to avoid sore shoulders pain. if you can sell me for a couple of 100 pounds, that Pinarello f12. this the only way pls help me...
Get a recumbent bike and ride pain free. No longer have to hold your head up and about 15% less wattage put out for speed. Banned by the UCI due to unfair aerodynamics. Hill climbs are just like a diamond frame bike ,you need to train for hills. Your ultralight carbon frame still needs you to move it. Your sub 15 pound carbon bike and my 28 pound touring recumbent are equal in speed as they sit on the side of the road .
What are your top tips for dealing with shoulder pain on the bike? Let us know in the comments below!

Why don't you get challenges thank you I love you

Hanks "on the bike and suffering" shots in slowmotion are off the charts :D give this man an oscar
All I'm getting from this, is that I'm loving the stealth black GCN kits with red accents...
it's nice , both kits have some amazing colours and designs.
Haha, love how Hank is pointing in the general direction of Manon and calling it "That pain! Ooh!" Good sibling rivalry there. Makes for good banter.
Great to see GCN hosts riding together again!!

I had a loose grip and almost lost bike. What should the angle range be of seat to handle bars. For comfort?
Hugo Brown There’s no answer to that question. It depends completely on the size, shape and flexibility of your body, and what you’re used to.

Loved the Video but Hank looked like he was trying to have a poo in some of these shots 😂😂😂
A whole new meaning the the word 'training'. :-))
Just take a clip of suffering Hank, put black and white filter on it and you have TV shop Ad. He must be selling some miracle painkiller ointment
Damn, Manon is rocking that slammed stem. Alright, pain, here I come.
Has a GCN presenter ever rode a bike without one?
What about sore back while decending gravel?
Do core work to strengthen your core which will make your body more stable whilst descending and get rid of back pain.
