I just realized, those two guaranteed weapon drops where you get the red rust basically teach the player that not everything you find will automatically be better than what you had, and also teaches you that what you find may have hidden or unexpected effects like that little 'jam'. Also teaches you very quickly that the properties of weapons you find can vary beyond just it's stats too- The shortsword has a shorter swing than you're used to from the intro, and the red rust has a longer slower one. It's also guaranteed to teach you that enemies can drop items, which depending on RNG you may not have learned up to this point. Such a simple and dense little tutorial moment.
I kinda think other castlevania games do it a little better, since the red rust is so weird, with such an intriguing name that I found myself assuming that it has to have some use to it. Other more open castlevania games usually have an item like a dagger or a brass knuckle that are a lot more straightforward in how bad they are. Its just a dagger. You know what a dagger is. You do not need to equip this.

With the red rust, you wonder if maybe it IS better, so you try it- You have an opportunity to see the attack stat and learn through that the relative strength of weapons, and maybe you still try it anyway, And you learn the differences, and the pit falls that may arise from using new weapons, all at the earliest stage of the game where the difficulty is the lowest. It (the red rust) breaks you out of your preconceptions of what something could be and teaches you to check the stats and the weapon out properly instead of just assuming what you found is better or worse, that weapons may have special effects, that they have different swing speeds and lengths, and perhaps most importantly that you should try a weapon out first to really be sure about it- Because something that seems awesome may be awful, and something that seems innocuous and useless could be basically the best weapon in the game; Take the Shield Rod as a stellar example of that. I think Dagger/brass knuckles type weapons fall woefully short in that regard.. Because by their very nature they basically deter the curiosity to try new things out unless it at face value seems like it would be a better weapon; instead of breaking you out of your preconceptions it reinforces them- Sword good, dagger bad, carry on without bothering to check, because you know its worse.

Resident Lucky Red Rust expert here. Seeing someone else go through the spiritual journey I did of beating SotN with Red Rust fills me with much joy as now I can see someone else suffer with the blade. Totally agree with you that Galamoth with Red Rust is a big fat No, but maybe I’ll actually attempt it at a later date just to see how truly painful it is.
Honestly, after getting the platinum for Requiem today and playing a fair bit of SotN the last days, I really don't think it's thaaat easy. I know spells are busted and once you reach inverted castle you can run straight to library and farm crisses, but still the increase in attack power for the enemies in second half is kinda nuts. And for someone who plays this game blind and doesn't know about the OP stuff this game can be pretty nutty in terms of difficulty. Even having kept Alucard gear and fully exploring first castle before getting into inverted one, a hit from a guardian still does 70+ damage and you only have around 500hp at that point.
The neat thing about the Red Rust, it only exists in the game to teach you that the sword with the best attack stat isn't always the best one. Since Doppleganger is so vulnerable to its curse ability, the Red Rust is the only realistic means for a new player to beat it without gitting extremely gud: the devs banked on you giving up from the difficulty and trying that "useless sword" out of desperation... and then steamrolling the fight.
Back in the day I got Basilard early in the Alchemy Lab by accident, I damage boosted with the blood skeletons. I would go to Doppleganger's boss room with the stop watch subweapon, use it and stab him repeteadly with Basilard. He always went down before the countdown ended.
I always thought that the missed opportunity to make Uncurse temporarily turn it into an OP killing machine with awesome magical effects like the Runesword or Marsil was tragic . Too obvious maybe ? Best believe that millions of us oldph@gs who played this game in 1997 with no guide or other resources at least tried it

My reaction to the title and thumbnail:
Jesus christ.
This is good content.
I just saw a video short that claimed using Estoc is even worse than Red Rust because it takes away double jump if you use it in the air and it lunges forward into enemies when used on the ground... soo, how about an ESTOC RUN in the future?
The first time i played this game, as everyone does i equipped the redrust.
It proceeded to “misfire” twice and I assumed it was a joke weapon and never equipped it again….
I wish they'd either remake this or just rekease it in another Castlevania port collection for Switch, alongside 64/Legacy, Curse of Darkness and Lament of Innocence.
You ever try the classic naked alucard run from gamefaqs?? I've yet to complete that one.
Where's Galamoth with Red Rust only? If you don't do it, i will...someday
With relics allowed Galamoth should be doable via loop exploit
so funny, nice job
Red Rust is a good weapon against Doppleganger
Red rust? More like Red MUST!
Video end at 1:41:46
Bait used to be believable- IS THAT THE RED RUST?
This was fun!
44:40 The jump cut lmao
Would be interesting to do a run where you also don’t gain xp
Lol its my challenge of 2006, my last challenge it's my 2010 all map no weapons no su weapons no equip no armor and no save no limits of time
ah yes the redrust%
Oof, this might have been Dr4gonBlitz's least favorite challenge run. I salute you sir.
I stopped watching him after his "SOTN hard type run" then shit on it no -stop saying it wasn't hard, ignoring the fact he used every cheat, glitch, and speed run bypass possible saying "more HP isn't hard", ignoring the fact he blended everything with end game gear.
Hold up...question... was this done with the absolute worst stats for Alucard from the prolouge?
Cause if so...damn...thats hard.
Also:
Maria: "wait a moment...!"
Alucard: [sigma walks past her and doesnt give a damn]
This challenge requires some sort of "out"... as you eventually realize at 1:25:20 hehe
But any armor you want?
If only we could get a port to Switch...
1:40:20 Yes. Yes you can.
This guy speaks with an unknown accent
Honestly, after getting the platinum for Requiem today and playing a fair bit of SotN the last days, I really don't think it's thaaat easy.
I know spells are busted and once you reach inverted castle you can run straight to library and farm crisses, but still the increase in attack power for the enemies in second half is kinda nuts. And for someone who plays this game blind and doesn't know about the OP stuff this game can be pretty nutty in terms of difficulty.
Even having kept Alucard gear and fully exploring first castle before getting into inverted one, a hit from a guardian still does 70+ damage and you only have around 500hp at that point.
nice now do it in luck mode
You can beat galgamoth dive kicking 😉
I mean, yeah probably
1:39:32 triple jam
Excuse me streamer but you used a form on the Frankenstein boss fight 🤓
Cool 🧛♂️🧛♂️
Red rust is a god weapon compared to teyrfing try doing a playthrough with only that
now finish it with tyrfing
How dreadful ha ha
He always went down before the countdown ended.
frst
I always thought that the missed opportunity to make Uncurse temporarily turn it into an OP killing machine with awesome magical effects like the Runesword or Marsil was tragic . Too obvious maybe ?
Best believe that millions of us oldph@gs who played this game in 1997 with no guide or other resources at least tried it
