French is EXTREMELY well alived in Quebec. Young people don't speak English anymore. Every car blasting French Canadian/Arab Rap. It's a different French than the French Canadian accent. It is heavily influenced from French spoken in North Afeican countries from where millions have immigrated here the past 15-20 years. In the 2000s, French was threatened. The language police has succeeded. The result is a unilingual people 100% control by French state media. If you heard their version of who Trump is, it's CRAZY. Not sure what they teach in New England schools but the country started in Virginia. Town I grew up in Varina in Henrico Va was founded in 1611. 9 years before the Mayflower. Just my Virginia pride taking over.

@@jimboscooter432St. Augustine FL was founded in 1565. Why limit ourselves to what the English settled? The Spanish were doing it before it was the hip new thing.
@@SoakintheSchadenfreude, because Protestant England, fought to keep Catholic France, and Spain from taking the Northern continent. Catholic Spies may have even poisoned many residents of Jamestown. Plots against Parliament in England, etc.. Also answers why modern Americans still side-eye the French, without understanding the reasons.
Because mythically, the early Massachusetts colonies were fleeing an seeking independence, while the Virginia colonies were just English transplants. And thr independence movement was spearheaded by Bostonians as much as or more than Virginians (though of course the initial resolution was brought by Virginia).
Many Americans still see themselves as not “mid westerns” but as “Irish” or “Swedish” etc. I almost think there are more traditional Europeans in the US than Europe in many ways. Also Louisiana still has the messed up law system of France.
I think that has to do with a few factors: 1. How recently that person's family immigrated to the US. 2. How that person's family was treated by American society when they arrived. 3. If there was any historical reason for the people of that state to strongly identify with it. (13 original colonies vs Nevada)
Anglo-Bros do east coast and west coast, then think all Americans are “nomads”. Barely anyone is actually from NYC, Florida, and California. The rest of the country is made up of enclaves kept for generations.
I would prefer a law system that spells out the law ahead of time. In other words, the law is codified and can be looked up. Also called civil law, the system is derived from the French legal system, really from Napoleonic code, which itself comes from Roman law. Not sure why knowing what is or is not considered against the law is messed up.
I've always seen myself as Southern(Dixie) or Scotch-Irish , but I think that was a response to growing up in majority non whites areas with everyone else identifying as (insert) something american.

Carl is the OG. His cultural awareness and discussions brought me to Tim. The good old days before the culture war rose to the top of most Western governments. That said, Europe is going to a dark place. There are only two historical outcomes; the culture of those who have represented their nation for 1500+ years are eradicated, or they eradicate those they view as invaders. This is the historical normality of humanity, and European history is filled with these cultural conflicts that consumed nations.
the "colonists" were "oppressed" in the sense they were treated as second class British citizens. they also felt they were capable of self-government and had de facto been self sufficient for a long time.

glad to say I watched the entire show, something I rarely do, usually just stick around for first 15-20 mins. Having the highly educated Carl and his colleague on is something you need to do much more of Tim and get similar guests on, like them both, in future.

Great conversation. Best episode in a while. Props to Tim for taking more of a passenger seat and letting the guests speak. He's come a long way on that.
Apparently the conversation between Trump and Putin over invading Ukraine went like this.
Trump: If you invade Ukraine I'll bomb Moscow into the ground
Putin: No you won't Mr. President.
Trump: I might.

And for what reason? Because London attracts all the attention? Well yeah that's how all of England feels too.
I mean at least Scotland has its own laws its own government(even it continously screws things up and drops education and health lower and lower by the year). England doesn't. England has Scottish, Welsh , Irish leaders and MPs.

The U.K. media treated Trump exactly as the deep state did. The BBC basically just spewed DNC talking points.

We're taught Jamestown was the first permanent settlement in America.
Did Tim and friends really say the pilgrims on the Mayflower were the first settlers?
@@jimboscooter432St. Augustine FL was founded in 1565. Why limit ourselves to what the English settled? The Spanish were doing it before it was the hip new thing.

@@SoakintheSchadenfreude - Thanks for saving me the bother.
Many Americans still see themselves as not “mid westerns” but as “Irish” or “Swedish” etc. I almost think there are more traditional Europeans in the US than Europe in many ways.
Also Louisiana still has the messed up law system of France.
I think that has to do with a few factors:
There's 5 times more americans claiming to be Irish than the actual population of Ireland
Hip hip hoorah! Our friends from across the pond representing.

In West Virginia, in the 8th grade, we had West Virginia history. I thought every state did that.
I grew up in NY, and we studied our state history as well.
We had pacific northwest history here in Washington. Taught mostly Washington state history but introduced Oregon and California history too.
So, same. We had Louisiana history in Louisiana. I really thought other states taught their states history too.
Alaska and Alabama both had in-depth state history. Many, many decades ago.
We had texas history in my state.
Pretty non pc too.
Yes Hanna, we are complacent about our culture. Not by choice though, IT IS BY FORCE. ANY celebration or even recognition of it will either cause a loss of employment or a complete ostracization from society at large.

Agreed, only things that can happen. As of 2012, it looks like eradication of 1500 years of a nation due to mass immigration.
