Just a couple of corrections....The LT5 can rev to at least 7000 RPM and that key to switch off and on full power can be removed. Similar to the Black and Red key for the Hellcat you switch the key to normal power and remove it when handing the car over to a valet.
I own a 1990 ZR-1 #2822 , i drive her often. The 1990 ZR-1 still owns several world endurance top speed records. I am privileged to care for this beast. Still "King of the Hill"
Nice video, but man that poor ZR-1 has had a rough life, the secondaries are obviously not working, if they were it would absolutely scream to 7200rpm and you should get a light that says "Full engine power" on the center screen when you flip the key. So unfortunately it was only working in half power mode in this review.
Actually, first ZR1 was 1970. Came with a modified LT1 350; 370hp. No power steering, no power windows, no radio, no AC etc. And the 1900 was VERY fast. 12.9 in the 1/4 is fast even by todays standards! And the valet jet most certainly comes out. Wouldn’t be much of a valet key if it didn’t! lol
The power key is definitely removable. That's why it exists in the first place. What point does it serve if not to foil the Ferris Bueller valets of the world?
The power switch is not a switch.... Its a key that can be taken out. Its called the valet key. And these Zr-1s are still fast and can handle like its on rails. I love my Z!!!
Aw man, I LOVE these! There was a mint black one for sale in my small country town last year for only $11k! I wanted it so bad, but there was no way I could buy it. This is now my attainable dream car
I don't think your valet key is working, it should show a light in the info center to say "Full engine power". 7,000rpm is stock redline. It shouldn't be lumpy or lazy, ever... That has had a very hard 13,000 miles...
You sure that has only 13,000 miles and not 113,000 miles? My 84' Vette has triple those miles and everything still works and is in way better shape. That thing has had a rough life. Entertaining review though. You got to come review my 600LT Spider and Dodge Demon one of these days.
Man this C4 is beat beat, not only for a ZR1 but for a C4 in general its in fairly rough shape. The dimmer switch next to the headlights is for the whole interior dash and lighting dimming. Also the full engine power key is supposed to be a removable key and is referred to as valet mode for shutting engine power down when handing the car to a valet or for more normal cruising. When it is turned on the light panel should show a FULL ENGINE POWER light on the engine light screen you mentioned. The steering wheel does have an Airbag although there is no passenger airbag and only a glove box there. Lastly, the ZR1 has a wider rear end and in 90 has the different rear with slightly squared taillights and rounded back as opposed to circle taillights and a concave rear. 91 all Corvettes gain that rear as well as updated front and side bumper strips but the ZR1 is still wider. I believe in 92 or 93 the ZR1 gets bumped up to 400 HP so it really does upon up more. As I said though, the model you reviewed needs quite a bit of work and may need engine work or electrical work with the valet key. The dash is certainly worn and the targa roof looks rough with the tape showing. Great review on your part though. I'm loving the content keep up the good work and finding and reviewing rare and cool cars man
You nailed it on your review. I laughed at the E brake handle flopping to the floor. Kinda broken! Along with most of the dash. Time is not kind to most 1990's cars. Especially that poor ZR-1. I know you can't find a well care for ZR-1 floating around for a review, but it was a good try overall. After all it's a 1990 car and comparing it to other non 90's makes, well they all had their moments too. A comparison with a 90 base model the ZR-1 was all that and then some. Most cars only put out 275 to 300 hp at most. My base is only 245hp, but 345lbs ft. torque. no speed demon here. But a low key cruiser that gets around just fine. It's good to see a younger guy trying out the older rides and hearing their thought's on old Teck. Put a smile on my mug. Most younger guys I've seen can't even drive a stick. So kudos on the review. Hope he Keep up the GOOD work!
Ok, everyone else covered, the key does come out, the info center should illuminate a Full Power light if the secondaries are functional. But for the record, perhaps a personal opinion, my C4ZR1 will give my C5Z06 fits, and that LT5 is far more advanced than my LS6. As for the comment about dragging you from a sofa, some school bullies just can’t stop being school bullies. Keep doing your thing, decent review overall.
The first ZR-1 bowed for the 1970 model year as a Special Purpose Engine Package. Twenty-five were produced, priced at $968.95, a hefty price when a base coupe stickered at $5,192.00.
I bought a 1990 ZR1 red/red. It had just over 30k miles. the car is almost in factory condition. It's apparent this car sat outside in the hot sun most of the time.
The ZR1 name first appeared without a hyphen during the 1970 model year, when it was a performance package for the C3 Corvette. This package included the 5.7-liter LT1 small-block V8, a heavy-duty 4-speed manual transmission, stronger brakes, improved engine cooling, and a performance-tuned suspension setup. The package could not be ordered with luxury options such as power windows, power steering, air conditioning or a radio and it seems as though less than 60 examples of the original ZR1 were built between 1970 and 1972. (pulled from the Corvette Forum)
The FULL key can be pulled out.. it's a normal GM key....you might have a different specs.. .. In my ZR-1, I used to remove it...and getting a new one (if lost) requires changing the whole switch.
This guy doesn't understand! Redline is 7200! Your shifting at 4000 learn how to drive the LT5. The ZR1 will blow the doors off of most modern cars, LEARN HOW TO DRIVE THIS CAR instead of you ranking down 90s cars! The new cars are f!@ing junk!!
The C4 ZR-1 had a laminated windshield with a laminate that reduced inside cabin temperatures due to the fact that the LT-5 specific A/C compressor is a little smaller and might have a bit less cooling capacity. What you are seeing with the orange color, is delaminating. It is NOT cool or a good thing. Most ZR-1s have some, and they are in varying degrees from mild to needing replaced. Here is the rub, it is obsolete so a regular C4 windshield use usually the replacement option which really sucks. It was a factory defect GM never rectified. 😡
Remember GM had to out sorce the making of the LT5 engine and also: GF 6 speed trans was manufactured in Germany so GM did all the base modern design of this car period
Dude, you don’t have to wear a suit but looking like someone peeled you off a couch after binge eating McDonald’s and Golden Corral following a drunk marathon is enough to skip the video
The 1990 C4 Corvette ZR1 is absolutely not the first ZR1 and its debatable as to whether it should have been called a ZR 1 considering its motor wasnt even designed by Chevrolet were as a true ZR has always been been a true American powered Chevrolet V8 . The first Corvette ZR 1 was the 1970 -1972 from the C3 generstion producing 370 HP and by 1972 power increased from 370 hp to 400 HP - ZR stood for Zora Racer One after Zora Arkus Duntov. ZR1 it featured a 370 horsepower 350 V8 with 780 CFM Holly 4 barrel hooked to a high flow all aluminum intake . The first ZR1 was upgraded with 178 CFM cam shaft with a 11:1 compression ratio . Note the 1970 - 72 Corvette ZR1 did not have AC nor a AM FM stero nor a rear defroster etc inorder to help reduce weight. The first ZR1 also had a heavy duty suspension and brake package. The 1990 C4 Corvette ZR1 was NOT the first ZR1. Spreading Misleading information. Its also important to note that the car that your incorrecttly calling the first ZR 1 is the first Corvette to have a motor that was not designed by Chevrolet. Im so sich of hearing people say " I wish the ZR 1 looks special you sound like everyone else I love the way the C4 ZR looks it doesnt need to scream that its different.. And it does look different for one the body is much wider and when you pop the hood its lotus designed DOHC 32 valve Multiport injected engine definayly stands out over its TPI predecessor. I dont flash I like a sleeper I like simplicity . That wide body is awesome.btw F'k Tesla .
Spoiled by a Tesla??? REALLY??? NO COMPARISON SIR!!!! Lets not ever talk about a C4 ZR1 in the same sentence with a Tesla mentioned in it. Power key is removable when off, and your vette there is a slug, surely due to "Full Power" mode not working, drive one that is working, and hold on to your ass, as it will swap ends before you have time to blink. Nice try....
I see others mentioning this already, so, I'm late to the game, but, if you can't recognize that the steering wheel has a big airbag, I'm afraid you don't know much about cars.
I have to agree with the comments below. I owned a 89 z51 car with 110k miles the interior was in similar worn condition. At $6k it was a fun car but this one is listed for 33k. Yikes

The fact he enjoyed it even with those issues makes me really want one

also he said that there are no display that power is on. It is on the on board-computer
Yeah they can only be removed when the car is switched to normal mode.
The LT5 was a special engine being DOHC and designed by Lotus. That is why it can rev. The only Corvette I would ever own

I love this car.
Great review. That was the car on most posters I seen in the early 90’s as a kid
That doesn’t look like a 13k mile ZR1. 😮
That car does have a driver air bag.

The key does come out on the engine power.
Should also mention the LT-5 was manufactured by Mercury Marine. Awesome car - hope you have a chance to review one in better condition someday.
I don't recall ever seeing an ashtray/cupholder combo before! 😳😳🤣🤣
No the c3 zr1 existed in the 70s
Ahhhh…..that steering wheel has a giant air bag.
That car must have been parked outdoors at a construction yard all its life.

how is that windshield so orange? kinda cool looking

Heavy to put into gear????? My ‘90 zr1 with 106k miles shifts so smoothly and the shifter slides right in. Stick to Civics.
