I’ve become an avid fan of Tuba Skinny over the past year since I discovered them on UA-cam. They have a unique style and approach to this kind of jazz “ depression era”. Shaye Cohn has a fine ear for this music and has managed to arrange her scores to showcase the talented musicians who have been part of this group over the years! She has even managed to compose some new music in the style of this genre which I find delightful.
The whole band is comprised of great musicians. Shaye seems to be the leader but they all play with other groups from time to time. Ericka has a band called Lonesome Doves that Shaye sings & plays fiddle.
There is nothing better than to sit at a Tuba Skinny concert and listen to my favorite New Orleans Band! Perfect collaboration of all the musicians. Never missed a beat. Best entertainment value available in 2018, bar none!
Some of the best music you'll ever hear in a lifetime of listening! Tuba Skinny is great, but the audience is unbelievably subdued. All they seem able to muster is polite applause. That's a little like whispering at a football game. Maybe they're just in awe of what they're hearing.

Thank God for the sheer brilliance of this music, the great American art form! And for bands like these guys (and gals ;) keeping it alive. Look kids, put down you smart phones with all it's digital music and take heed. Living and breathing musicians, playing non-electrical, midi-free instruments as one, on the fly, to perfection!! And don't it just make ya happy and want to play along with kazoo or something?
I certainly agree on your statement re. drowning out the band, but isn't Jason Lawrence banjo playing just one of the most solid around. His beat is rock steady from beginning to end.
