Unfortunately, tech layoffs have gotten a lot worse since the last video I made addressing the recession topic. But this situation was not a complete accident - a main factor was poor decision making by executives. Thankfully, these times won't last forever - I explain what we can do in the meantime.

Hope you all are taking care of yourselves, we WILL get through this! As you can see, I'm working on my video editing skills to prepare myself for layoffs.. but in seriousness, the grind NEVER stops. As long as you have valuable skills, your employer never has too much power over you.
I'll have some new features coming to neetcode.io pretty soon (free).
Also, I'll be making coding interview related content on instagram soon, so follow me here if you're interested: instagram.com/neetcodeio/
BTW if you're interested in working with me on NeetCode stuff please fill out this form: forms.gle/ZUmofsb5QeHzexJv9
Why should you be sad about this? All google is doing is spying on people and selling stupid ads... They cannot even innovate now.. It seems like all of Silicon Valley is doing now is trying to make lamer copies of tiktok
Any hints on what features you will be adding ?
@@randytruong6621 It will be DSA related - features I haven't seen anywhere else.
@@NeetCode I've filled the Google form hoping to work with you. I live in Kenya but flexible enough to work on any time zone. Thanks your channel is helping me alot
Hi Neetcode, what if employers did not hire. where are those 100k employees will be? I won't blame the employers' fault. Everyone in the market is seeking for a job. either you land in big tech or small firm. But those people will have to get a job regardless, they will not to go to service sectors like restaurants and retails. Covid benefit tech too much. Every tech company gain weights, it is just time to lose some dead weight in my opinion
I agree, tech will recover and this is temporary. In the meantime we best keep our leetcode skills sharp in case that layoff comes.
A thing to point, during the pandemic, there were hiring freezes for FAANG companies.
Thank you for all the free content you produce. I'm from Turkey and it's usually impossible for me to buy courses since minimum wage is 300$ a month here.
same here 😔
bro i lll share my stuff with u
wage matters only in comparison with cost of living
@@Pluto102 Cost of life is certainly much more cheaper than EU or USA but the inflation is like 80℅ here.
The problem is i can't afford to get exam vouchers for exams like security+ since they are like 50℅-70% of the minimum wage

Your channel is a godsend, dude.
Thanks for the video.
A small suggestion: your likes to views ratio seems to be way off for the neetcode website videos, maybe adding the rate buttons to the the pop up might improve that or maybe clicking on the video can redirect it to youtube so users will be able to rate. Thanks for all you do nonetheless.
So true. I had to go to UA-cam to click like button.
Just wanted to say I'm enjoying these more "memey" informative videos you have been putting out! When I make it one day you will definitely be the first online person I will have to thank
Do you think big companies (like Google) will continue "bringing warm bodies through the door" while managing out those low performers?
As much as it pains me to say, it kinda makes most logical sense to take advantage of "rotating" out your staff during this layoff / freeze era in tech.
Also, can you add the problem category when in "list" mode? Or open your codebase so we can PR stuff like that.
Or add search capability across all problems when in category mode (collapsed).
Lol also an expand all button would be cool.
Thanks!!
Thank you for always keeping us uptodate!and making your content free to users.
can you make a video on common imports and their implementations in LC problems? (like collections.defaultdict, counter, defaultdict(set), etc.) ?
Was this a neet code problem that you solved as always?!
Thx
I like the video
Six months ago every time I refresh there is someone who joined FAANG but now these companies are laying off. Most hard hitting people are foreigners who are on H1B which we need to find a job within 30 - 45 days. If everyone freezes hiring then it will be very difficult to find a job in that time
Agreed! During the pandemic there was a huge demand for workforce and now that the pandemic is almost over, there is not much use of the extra staff hired during the said times.
Great video man, I did not expect such comedy gold.
Aw man, awesome video. I'd love to work for ya... but I am just starting a job so I better not over-book. Thanks to you for helping me get the job! :)

I was layed off as well. I sure love that profit incentives and undemocratic control of companies means the lives of workers are sacrificed whenever profits are at stake.

Im interested to know from you folks that are unemployed like me, how are you balancing between leetcode and personal projects (real world skills).

This is great content 👌🏼
Good video 👍 .. keep rocking 🤗
does this layoffs will affect freshers in any way :( .. im about to complete my college
grinding leetcode itself is taking a long time for me. If company shifts away from leetcode style coding interviews wouldn't it be a disaster given that I have spent lot of time on leetcode and starting new on the things which I don't even know and will surely take even more time to understand new interview questions. Already having a tough time even getting an interview because my profile does not have any tech stacks like react js or nodejs or java or anything like that. Current company only works on C programming and few networking concepts.
Algorithm patterns are important regardless of the field, so Leetcode is not a waste of time
0:31 who the hell is that monopoly guy in the back? :D
Also do maybe adjust the price a bit for people from developing countries (countries with very low exchange rate for the dollar).
Interest rates were never near zero in the USA, it dropped to 2.75% for a short period. In Europe the average interest rate was 1%, with the current inflation it raised to almost 2% while it's 7%in the USA
I think that's correct for consumer interest rates, but I believe the fed funds rate was near zero.
Thank you!
Management could have found a poor performing workers within a quarter. The corporates are creating economy crisis.

Hi Ne, I have a question for you, how much Math is needed for SDE, Thanks
Love You brother. You voice is magic is gives me lot of inspiration. IDKW . But one thing i want to ask why shouldn't charge separately for you courses if someone interested only fro system design he can purchase it.
That quote at the end of the video !
Never understood why tf Netflix was part of "FAANG"
I absolutely loved this video!
As a highly esteemed member of the unemployed I would gratefuly take that 4 month severance package and work part-time at walmart until I find another cushty tech job
@zionstar07 yup, people need to stop getting obsessed over FAANG and unicorn tech companies. There's plenty of jobs that allow you to grow decently while having a decent work life balance. Yes, it's good to have a high goal like a FAANG or innovative startup that will probably IPO, but as always with life, it's a marathon not a race.
Thank you

Excited to see how Twitter progresses in the next few years. I for one am optimistic given the opportunity aggregate multiple applications into one.
Curious what others think. Will they grow above 250M MAUs? I encourage others to reply to this thread on their predictions for Twitter, and we can visit this again in 1-3 years.
I hope they just close it
Twitter will crash and burn because Musk is an idiot that doesn't know how to actually manage a company without people managing him, and he fired most of the competent people. Either :
1- Twitter will be sold to some people that can actually turn it around
2- Become a conservative cesspool and keep losing money
3- Go bankrupt
Love to pay my $1B loan service in A C T I V E U S E R S. I'll be totally honest. I think Elon spent months in court trying to wriggle out of this vastly overpriced LBO of an unprofitable tech company during a recession because it's one of the biggest business mistakes in human history. Maybe he can turn this thing around by selling movie tickets and car rentals though. Everyone is clamoring to have their brands next to neonazi memes, CP and crypto scams.
There are apps that already exist that are like that like WeChat, Line, etc. The problem with building an app like that is feature bloat makes it difficult to maintain and also no matter what eventually with the new generation it'll fall out of style and you'll end up with a graveyard of psychotic old people like Facebook.
And Elon already looks like he's speedrunning for that audience.
1:48 "decision to lay off employees is made almost exclusively based on shareholder interests"
2:03 "CEOs are obligated to maximize profits"
I didn't get the connection between the shares price and the profit. Was it meant to be "maximizing share price" instead of "profit"?
Dude, high profits= high returns to shareholders.
Thanks NeetCode.
Strong stay and code on brothers. Winter is coming!

NeetCode I have no idea why I'm saying this here, however, please talk a bit about the fear of getting the first job. I almost refuse all of my interviews and make excuses to not go for the interview. I'm freaking out badly. Please give me a piece of advice
1) Look up "imposter syndrome"
2) Then realize that everyone has it...sufficient enough folks to have given it a name, at least.
3) Then realize that an interview is advertising a need and everyone has needs. Go fill some and be filled in exchange! If it doesn't fit, move onto the next until it feels right.

Do you think IT consulting companies will do layoffs? Like Cognizant, IBM??
Yes, if not this year but next year
Hardly. Cuz they provide services to other industries and if they do that means were are in very heavy recession and govt. will intervene.

Do we need to worry about all that is going on in tech now, will things really get better or is that just a statement to give tech geeks hope?
Any suggestions for New Grads who are currently looking for a job?😢
don't just look for FAANG companies. there's plenty of mid to large cap tech companies to choose from that didn't over-hire like crazy. You could even just look for non-tech companies that need software engineers that need the experience. don't be so down on yourself if it takes up to a year to find work. what matters is you do the prep work and are ready to work from the ground running. really figure out what you want to do roles wise: mobile app dev, front-end, full-stack, backend (probably a lot harder for new grads since your data structures and system design have to be even more solid).
Really make use of your network and actually ask them what they do weekly and what would they do differently if they were to start from scratch as a new grad or software engineer again. Understand what tech stack is in demand in the areas you are applying and get good at a optimal language for leetcode (python, javascript). If you live in the states or Canada, really be up for re-location and apply across to any tech hub city.
Worst case scenario, you go for some government job or company that does a lot of contracting work for government departments. Sure the pay isn't quite the same, but you will at least get the experience and have more time to make mistakes and learn on your own for 1-2 years before you decide to find a tech job you want more.
TL;DR..really figure out what you want to do in software engineering (it's a big field) and use your network as much as possible. Only really use your network though once you have had a few good interview rounds at not as desired companies. Tackle the not as desirable interviews first to get practice, then once you are a lot more comfortable, apply to the 'better' roles. Last of all, don't feel lesser if you end up doing a government job or company that does contracting work for government. Get your foot in the door first and find a decent job that allows you to learn and has decent mentoring.
@@CknSalad Thanks for your advices. I guess at this time one thing that I can do is keep practicing and don't lose faith.
Bro pls tell whether faang companies gonna hire for web3 related roles or not
Anyone who tells you the answer to that is lying, nobody knows what's gonna happen
"Don't just wait doing nothing" is the most important line in the video... Everything else is a prediction.. Also I don't believe large companies increased hiring just because FED printed more money and yes it did shoot up the stock prices of these companies... Now to justify the disproportionate value laying off is not the solution...
Guess it's time to dig up my dusty pharmacology degree and put it to some use, software was so much fun though.. 😒😢
I like the videos for the content and soothing voice that explains it, when it's just you talking and no background music and if any then very low and minimal so the weird sound effects you tried here really missed the mark. It's almost cringe.
If I lose my visa I’m f**** 😂😂
You’re right people who are still working in twitter are definitely looking to shift but had to stay because of h1b and hiring freeze. If this was 2021 twitter would have left with less than 100 engineers
are H1B visa workers getting fired the most?
Thousands of h1b workers were already layed off. Ive seen ones on linkedin who didnt even get to move to the usa and were layed off just days before their flights. You better have a backup plan. Get a student visa or something
@@Snail641 I am coming for Master's (2 year program). I will have a student visa and then H1B.
Lately I've seen a lot of articles and videos popping up (even though I don't follow any of so-called "influencers") telling me that things are shit and if I don't want end up unemployed I should be putting in the work. And I'm like "ok, that makes sense". But then you see that Elon fires 60-70% if twitter staff, tesla's going to lay off 10k of their workers (I know that those aren't all software engineers, but still), google is planning to lay off several thousand people, etc.
What I'm curious about is what counts as being productive in big tech companies? Is there really are thousands of people in these companies who just show up and don't do shit on their jobs? Or is it a case as with twitter where being productive means sacrificing your life to Elon? If so, why would anyone actually want to work in an environment like this (genuine interest, I legit want to know)?
Why would someone want to be close to Elon, is what I read your question as...
...and to respond, I'd say you'd have to ask his baby mommas that question and hear what they have to say.
I kind of wish these companies would just focus on building good products and trust with their consumer base instead of constantly gambling on how much they can strangle the goodwill of their customers until they inevitably tell them to screw themselves.
Bro is legit funny than most of the youtubers out there, Thanks for making amazing content :)
