If you brought that snake down to a urban canal in south Florida, you would probably catch something within 8 casts. You should come down here and fish with it.
Bass don't know how big they are. They don't have mirrors to see themselves and they don't have hands to see if they can eat something or not so there's only one way to find out and that's to take a swing.

You are working the snake all wrong. I fish a lot of retention ponds here in southeast VA. You need to stop it and let it sit when it gets near cover or work it towards the bank and stop it. I have fished a lot of spots where brown water snakes are prevalent. They move but they always go for cover and stop as soon as they get to it. Bass will eat it, hell I even caught snook or cobia on the rivers using the same technique if you move the it to cover or the bank.
