    In this video, Dr. Shanty Paul explains about phloem (one of the complex permanent tissues in plants), it's components and functions in detail, using simple animations. Phloem is specialized in food transport throughout the plant. Phloem consists of sieve elements (sieve tube members and sieve cells), companion cells, phloem parenchyma and phloem fibres. This video is primarily designed for class 11 NCERT biology students but it will be useful for all those who are interested in learning biology. Also this video will be very helpful for students preparing for NEET/ AIIMS/ JIPMER/ KCET exams.

    Mam their will be no any effect in food transportation as phloem is present at inner part of the bark of the tree. Hence the tree will survive

    If you remove the bark the xylem is free and not protected and phloem is gone, so in this section, there will be no food transport, but is it possible for Xylem/Parenchyma to differentiate into a cambium to form new Phloem cells? like secondary meristem?

      You are the first to give me an answer for this question. I am very happy about that. Actually the answer depends on the age of the tree. If the tree is really old, girdling at the base of the tree, will kill the tree. But if the plant is young and actively growing it will manage to regrow the bark. I myself tried it (just out of curiosity ;)) in some of my experimental plants. They were three-month old Populus sp. plants and I saw that the plants managed to regrow bark after a few weeks and grew normally thereafter. Keep it up the spirit of learning.     Yes the tree will survive because pholem transport food in bidirectional so tree can Survive I think please answer my comment as early

    The tree will continue living because the ring is just at the superficial layer of the stem and so food and water transport will not be affected

    Mam, l think...the tree will survive because..we have cut only the bark not the Vascular Cambium...and so, the Cambium will produce the Phloem quickly...to transport food....

      When you remove the bark, the vascular cambium will also rupture because the cambial cells are thin walled. If you peel off a strip of bark around the entire diameter of a tree, as in the case of this old tree, the roots will starve and the tree will eventually die. Best regards, Shanty

      That's a brilliant question but the reason is unclear. It could be that phloem parenchyma helps in food storage and in monocots this function is performed by water cavities. Best regards, Shanty

      Dear Priyanka ,
      the answer is plant roots will die first due to lack of food . Since phloem is removed through gridding so no conduct of food in root possible. As Xylem is still their , conduction of water will not stop . Leaf can perform photosynthesis . But in long run plant will die .

    Because girdling the tree removes its outer bark and disrupts the phloem, the sap, or food, produced by the leaves cannot reach other parts of the tree. The tree slowly dies due to lack of nutrients and moisture. It may take up to one year for the tree to die.

      Thank you for sharing your problem with me. In my case, after my higher secondary education, I was very sure that I had a strong passion towards Botany. Plants and nature never cease to amaze me :) So I made up my mind to choose the subject that I loved and I chose B.Sc. Botany and Plant Biotechnology. Always follow your passion and aim the stars in the sky ;). It is not important what you learn, but it is important how you learn it (enjoyed or not). It is not important what you do, but it is important how you do your job. I know that many students face similar problems from the societies.     The phloem fibres will be cut out this stops translocation the plan will survive but only till the reserves in the lower part of the trunk support formation and development of root eventually since no new glucose reach the roots the apical meristems in roots
    die and then good bye tree. But why take the risk and kill the tree I don’t understand humans .hehehehe
