When you are docked, you can used the mooring pegs on the dock to reel in your boat. You don't need to manually try to position it closer.
First of all; there are tow missions that pop up. I had one pop up after a few hours of gameplay but I didn't have a service boat at the time to do it. I now have 28 hours in and still enjoying finding and learning new things (only had two crashes).
Strategy that I took to make lots of money; in the beginning, handline fishing to buy the cargo boat - cargo missions till I could afford Flippy.
Fishing run to the northwest fishing grounds with Flippy, followed the fishing seasons that are listed in Help section and went for Pollock January - May using Crab as Bait. Missed hooking most of the fish and when I sold the catch, got paid 400k with 1x longline (LL) bought 3 more LL and did another run to the NW sold for 1..2 Million.
Reached level 2 and bought DR Phil boat, did more cargo missions for money and XP, got crane license then went for a 3rd trip out to NW sold fish for another 1.3 Mill.
Bought a Fish Farm - tipped about 12,000Kg of food in the hopper (absolutely panful with 50kg bags. I hope they place a care at the Fish Farm to fill the hopper with, could only afford 35,000 Smolt - skipped to the 8th day and still had almost 2,000 food left. Sold fish for 35 Million and haven't looked back. :)
Bought all the boats and been exploring map, without spoiling too much there is lots to discover, (longer cargo trips pay heaps in XP and have more things to find). Worst part of the game for me is loading all the food into Fish Farm hopper 50Kg at a time :( but its worth it.

Maybe you couldnt buy smolt until you had a tank installed?
Also, you have kids Grill, but youre surprised the food consumption goes up as the fish grow?? 😂
You can pull yourself in from the shore by using the tie downs. They give you prompt to pull it in by pressing E.
The service boat you bought also says it can do cargo, looks like it has more room, an is faster (when upgraded)
Plus the rescue missions probably pay alot better
Don't forget to sleep for faster fish growing. But you use a ton of food to get the fish to mature.
The whales are cool! Although I'm sure a few government agencies would like to talk to you about getting too close, lol. Hopefully they add more tourist stuff because there seems to be lots of potential there.
It's a law here in California that you have to cut your engines if a whale is in the area

You can pull your boat in from where its tied at...yellow pegs
Working biars and service boats are not designed to move like a speed boat due to the fact that they are not classed as pleasure boats and have more power than speed for the work they do
I still enjoy playing Baron Sea and just started a new save for FNA after over 200 million in the bank
75 food for only 5k. You can buy upto 20k
Unfortunately the fish do die If they run out of food, not sure how long it takes after they run out.

you can make a crap ton of money from the minimum amount of fish at the farm but you need to be ready to feed them a lot. and I've seen some issues that you need to do everything in one session with the farms. do not load a save or restart the game after putting fish in or it stopped working.
I'd watch if you do the Barents Sea one :)
