  • In the 17th century, the local rulers of the Kingdom of Naples imposed heavy taxes on permanent structures. The farmers of Alberobello, eager to avoid paying these taxes, devised a way to build homes that could be easily dismantled and reassembled. With no mortar holding the stones together, the trulli could be quickly taken apart when tax collectors arrived.
