Good review. I got the concert Ohana ck 50wg Solid cedar top. Willow laminate sides last year from a local little music shop in Wisconsin. I love it. And for only 259.00 dollars I think it is well worth it. 😊
Ohana is pretty great other than the price... That and some of their wood choices... I'd make different choices. They also seem to try and hide laminated vs. not, at times, which can be confusing to the consumer. Personally, I would prefer options with unfinished necks too. I've had my eye on their mango pineapple for a while, but would want the spikey headstock, which is, for some reason, absent on that model... Love the review of this one!
For some reason I just got this. It’s Monday. I played some Ohana tenors a while back, they were all very one dimensional. They did look nice. It’s about time they put in through the body bridges! I hate that pickup! I own an Ohana concert scale ukulele, and I really like it. I think this one’s a home run, people will buy it because of the name and reputation. Thanks for the review, I really enjoyed it!
@@GotAUkulele Some might consider that greedy... And thank you, got myself a new pair of noise cancelling ear buds today and was wondering what album to test them with. Your t shirt provided the perfect inspiration. 🤖
I love my Ohana 35 Soprano set up by Mims here in the states. That said this is a nicely put together Tenor. I like plan old acoustic ukulele’s and guitars. I don’t like the electronic pick ups etc. i really like the sound it plays well strumming and picking. As always thanks for this one👍🏼….DOC
In the past two years, I bought two Ohana pineapples; a fancy soprano and a plain (but gorgeous) solid mahogany tenor. I'm very pleased with their build quality and tone(s). Without the pickups , I think they offer good value, though I believe of both mine were on sale when purchased. This one is beautiful to behold and sounds great. I also agree that the noncut without pickup is likely the better value. Excellent review of an innovative new design.
Thanks Baz, always think the Ohana’s do look classy and the finish looks really nice. I am not a fan of electrics as I will never need them, but there must be plenty of people that do. I think prices of everything are on the up and it hasn’t taken long to disseminate down to instruments. However this has a lot of competition at that price. Great review and and in balance it does sound nice, probably improve it further if the strings were replaced. Have a great rest of your bank holiday and hopefully you get the chance to do another next week, it may break an event that is going on, that will start 🎉probably tomorrow and go on for another month after that 💂🏾♀️🏰🇬🇧
Yep - plenty do need electrics, but most pros I know use simple passives - and none of these clunky setups. Less wires, less weight. Prices are certainly up!!
I love the instrument, love the woods, love the sound. I too hate the big dirty looking pickup on the top side and would never buy a ukulele with that attached. I don't hate pickups per se, just not on ukes. I had one on my Takamine acoustic guitar, which was fine, because it didn't stand out like a bruise on your forehead. If I were buying one, I would definitely go for the purely acoustic (dont care about the cutaway, I won't be up there anyway tbh) version AND at £150 cheaper? No-brainer for me! 🤷🏻♂️ Thanks for another great review Baz, really enjoyed this one. Stay safe mate! 👍
This is a really great review and one of my favorite brands. I own 3 Ohana ukes and love them. Of course i got them from Mim so they play wonderful right out of the box. Also none of them came with cases, even the $600 solid eucalyptus one i have. I'm eyeing up a BKT-250 uke were it is a baritone body and tenor scale neck. Any chance you'll be reciewing one of those?
I’ve been told by my luthier that a tenor scale neck on a baritone body won’t work, because the bridge placement will not allow the. Top to vibrate sufficiently. I’m very interested to see what Ohana does.
I watched several videos. They did it by using regular tenor gCEA strings. The lower octave gCEA strings that Living Waters sells wouldn’t work, there wouldn’t be enough tension, and they’d be too floppy to make the right tones. That’s my informed opinion. The uke I am having built will have a tenor/baritone hybrid neck and a bari body that will use these strings. On another note, I think it’s weird that Ohana wouldn’t ship a $600 uke without a case! Although, I did receive a $630 uke in cardboard once…..
Great review as always baz thanks ..yeah it's a nice bit rich for me when like you say there's a few flights for £100 plus less ...it's not a horrible looking instrument but nothing different to a few others like it sounds absolutely lovely tho
I had the same reaction when I saw the electronics: beginner’s pickup and controls in an advanced instrument … why? There is a decent active pickup alternative: MiSi Acoustic Trio. I have an all-acacia Obama tenor that looked lovely but was rather quiet. Then the top got scratched by the cleaning crew at my office. My luthier and I sanded the clear coat down to a mere film, and now it speaks cleanly and loudly: the factory had overdone it on the finish.
I laughed at the end bit. I live in a monarchy as well (Sweden) and I am about as big a fan of royalty as you seem to be. Anyway, great instrument and review!
Too bad on a nice solid wood instrument that they stuck all those electronics on the side . . . but I am surprised at the number of players that want them though. And not that many of them play out in gigs.
I think that its one of those things that people think is a good idea, that costs the manufacturer little to add. Very few actually need or use it, from my observation. Only one of my instruments has one of those in (and I got it secondhand, wasn't my choice), and I won't be buying one with one in unless it is already there and the bargain is too good to miss. And I DO gig on stage (use acoustic iRig or decent microphone).
@@ukeleleEric Simply don't understand why they don't fit a passive - or if they feel the need to go active (not sure why I don't own a single active pickup and played for several years on stage with passives) then at least go with one with sound hole controls. There is a misunderstanding that a passive pickup needs more gear - it only does if you are running direct to a desk (some sort of DI possibly EQ) - but if you plug direct to an amplifier - the amp does all you need - that IS the EQ.
@@ukeleleEric I want to get an iRig. I have found in my gigs which are admittedly small, that a Lavalier mic clipped to my shirt and plugged into the low impedance jack on a Fishman Loudbox picks up both my voice and the uke. quite well . . . especially the soprano.
@@edwardpetersen4309 Worth remembering as an alternative if I need it. I mainly do busking au naturel, and never had an issue yet, really (but my voice is a bit hoarse even now from a 4 and a half hour busking session on Monday - don't usually exceed 3 hours)
Ohana has also been a very good business citizen in Southern California by supporting local organizations and events.
Nice to hear

Thanks for a very nice review ❤️
The look, the sound, the quality of building...I'm not surprised. It is after all an Ohana ❤️❤️❤️

Magic Fluke Flea - my first 'proper' ukulele, without which I don't think I would have stuck with it and been hosting this site!
