A pretty great and interesting history on the very first Barney plush from 1990 produced by Dakin despite how rare it is and even one of those ridiculously amount of prices on eBay it is nostalgic to most people. By the way really nice update on the logo.
I'll admit the 1990 suit use to sorta creep me out because of the eyes. But know its my favorite Backyard Gang era costume. That's like my dakin Barney doll I got off mercari reminds me of the ones shown in Barney in Concert that kids are shown with in the audience. Great video Hedge. As always I enjoy your content.
That's pretty cool that members of Barney's fan club got plushes that were similar to the ones from the 'Barney & the Backyard Gang' episodes. I wish they sold plushes that looked like the dolls from seasons 1-3 of 'Barney & Friends' too, but I see your reasoning behind why the company didn't do that!
It’s a real shame that they took away the Dakin Barney doll from retail right when Barney & Friends premiered. I was born in 1992 and missed my chance. I remember watching Barney in Concert and looking at the kids in the audience with their Dakin Barney doll and thinking to myself “Wait a minute, I don’t have that one? How did they get that?!”
Fun Fact: there’s actually an obscure bootleg Barney plush of the Dakin Backyard Gang plush! I actually found out about it by purchasing it on Mercari for $12. (The images I took when I sold it are actually the first ones on Google Images). The bootleg uses green eyes and a much more saturated magenta than the original plush (using a dark magenta, almost maroon). If I had to wager my guess, this bootleg plush was probably made in 1992-1994 when official Barney dolls were selling out, so they probably used a previous plush to blatantly copy to look more official. There isn’t a lot of documentation on it though
Seems like a huge blessing they updated the plush toy for barney and friends series bc had they didnt it would probably be law issues it was sooooooooo cute while it lasted but a change is super deedooper and the show became iconic ... hedge your channel is fun to watch im going on a binge 😄😄😄😄
YOU KNOW IMAGINE IF ALL OF THE BARNEY AND THE BACKYARD GANG VIDEO CAN TURN INTO DVD'S, WITH MORE HIGH QUALITY, AND COMES WITH DIFFERENT LANGUAGES, SING-ALONGS, INSTRUMENTALS, AND SOME SPECIAL BONUS FEATURES LIKE A BEHIND THE SCENES EXTENDED SCENES AND BLOOPER REELS, NEW EFFECTS, AND MAYBE AND INTERVIEW WITH THE BACKYARD GANG MEMBERS
@@HedgeOnStage I think the best approach would be a complete set of all 8 Backyard Gang videos, with the bonus features on top of that, such as the cassette tapes released for them.
I didn't even know there was a Barney plush for Backyard gang I know thought it was for the final Barney show on PBS Kids. Also, I didn't know it was illegal to keep the same plush for a different version of the show that's interesting. Why is that illegal exactly?
Showing merchandise that derives from the program (ex. toys you can find at Walmart or any other store) during the program itself could be seen as advertising, even if it’s never explicitly implied that that’s what they’re trying to do. You can’t even just have the toy sitting in the background with no one talking about it. The FCC put that rule in place as children at their age are unable to differentiate when they’re being advertised to or not
I was able to find a Dakin Barney plush at my local flea market at a surprisingly cheap price! He now resides in my bedroom with all my other plushies, and i've been taking good care of him since
I got one of the Dakin BYG Barney Dolls back in 2018 and got it only for between 50-70 bucks (can't remember actual price...) on eBay. It may possibly be the later version, the head is noticeably small and nose is somewhat larger. From what I seen, it feels similar to Rock with Barney in terms of appearance. Overall, really glad I got this guy for cheap, because he goes expensive nowadays. Especially the Gund BYG Barney doll, which you goes more expensive nowadays, unless someone sets it for a cheap price like 100. Really shows how much a time skip can change prices overtime. Thanks for listening to my story, TF1945.
I honestly wonder too, I’m sure a crew member probably still has it but just doesn’t know that that specific doll was essentially the face of the Backyard Gang’s second trilogy lol
i did found and got one of the plushies for $36. most of the spots are kinda ripped but hey, it was one of the only listings at the time that wasn’t hundreds of dollars lol
Also do you like the Lyon era or Hit era version of Barney better and why?! Also, what are your favorite episodes from both eras?! Do you think Hit Entertainment ruined the franchise like they did to their other franchises like Thomas the Tank Engine, Bob the Builder, and Fireman Sam?
HIT is what I should’ve grown up with but I was never fond of the way it looked/sounded, so I never tuned into it. I was also a child then so I haven’t freshly gone back over that era. I don’t necessarily think they “ruined” the franchise, but the directions they took weren’t the best they could’ve gone with and it definitely showed. My favorite episodes from LYONS are from the 2nd and 3rd seasons.
Mainly just in changing the format later down the line. Again I haven’t delved back into it just yet but I remember that’s part of why I stopped watching and turned away from it
@@HedgeOnStage yeah that's how I felt with Thomas the Tank Engine because they changed everything about the show that wasn't what it used to be. It's like they take your favorite characters, and make them something different entirely that you don't recognize because it's not building character from the original show but rather it's being worse than it ever was before.
@@HedgeOnStage speaking of Hit shows, have you seen other Hit shows besides Barney the Dinosaur? I know Barney the Dinosaur, Thomas the Tank Engine, and Bob the Builder were Hit Entertainment's biggest franchises worldwide back in the day for sure!
we must not be speaking of the same thing. There’s a famous instance in which legitimate SpongeBob merchandise had to be altered with different outfits that couldn’t be bought in stores during a live action segment as it was tantamount to advertising. Mind you, this instance was in the early 2000s. It was very much still a thing and still is.
It is not a coincidence that Barney hitting TV nationwide prompted a change in the characters toy form, the Dakin could not be brought over unless it was promoted outside the series as opposed to being shown throughout.

yay’! I’m a day late to this comment but I hope you have/had fun! LOLLL 🌈 much love!
Great Video Hedge!! Always wondered why no doll looked exactly the same; you made me take a glance at my doll and it does differ from yours
absolutely! they’re all special in their own way! 😭
3:15 not the same cast, Salim Grant aka Jason only did the first three videos and was replaced by Ricky L Carter
I was waiting for someone to pull the ‘um actually’ 🙄
aside from the one obvious switch, it’s literally the exact same cast lmao
I'm very happy to have the backyard gang doll at last! I've wanted the doll since Barney Goes To School.
We have to talk about him breakdancing in a suit
in this Ted talk we will- -

maybe in the future but it’s guaranteed Mattel has no market/reasons to put that out right now unfortunately lol

Um, that law against advertising to children via a TV series was abandoned in the early '80s.
