I even remember clear as day when I had this elementary teacher who like to pick on this one kid who immigrated from Guatemala and said something along the lines of “this language is not tolerated here in class young lady” to her when she asked another student in Spanish to help decipher something from a children’s book💀 It’s like the U.S. wants to bleach and sterilize us of our culture and identity so badly I can see why there was a Pachuco Movement in the 1940s-60s.

For school and funding stuff, I put "other" since Native American means specific tribes only. If you have indigenous ancestry, make sure you mark that somewhere so that we get more medical funding to study things that affect us more (like diabetes).
Yeah honestly I don't see the problem with doing this because the top two ethnic groups that have issues with diabetes is Natives and 'Latins' (I put it in quotes because I am still coming up with a term that encompasses us) due to how a lot of us have native heritage.

Indigenous isn’t a race. It’s an umbrella term for people from the Americas. Lot of different phenotypes from Eskimos to Aztecs. Clearly many of the different types of “indigenous” groups could be categorized as different races due to the genetic diversity of the Americas. Diversity is beautiful thing. I told her I couldn't because I'm Puerto Rican, so she put "White". At the time, I thought she was just trying to shut me up lol. These 2 here with straight hair.. they could classify themselves as indigenous American or mestizo, depending on whether or not they want to acknowledge any European blood they may have. What's so hard about that? It's plain to see.
Because mestizo is rarely an option. White is generally the only thing that applies. And saying “indigenous” requires you to put tribal information, which most mestizos don’t have.
@@shazaalala28 that's why I proposed simply "indigenous American" because like many black Americans, Latinos have been robbed of their identity, making it difficult to pinpoint your exact ethnic origin. Hopefully the race options on the census change, it does seem a bit outdated.

I was born in 1963 in California. My birth certificate for race just states white or black. 🤔
White, Native, Black, Asian are races everything else is mixed

When I went to school, there was no box for Filipino. Under Asian, it only included the typical East Asians and some southeast Asian and also South Asia.

Another reason why, is basically many Hispanics are not white , because of alot of indigenous and or black ancestry.The people here arent white , they lookk indigenous or black , so picking white would be denying their real ancestry.

Because it’s misleading. Saying you’re only white when that’s only 50% of your makeup is unspecific.
