    Motogadget just upped the ante again. What is possible with BT now (Sena are also doing some brilliant things with coms and cameras) is really impressive. Great review, even behind the beard I can tell you're as excited about this as I am. Hooray now you don't need to carry a configuration sheet around with you on your rides.

    looked at rhe manual after video. One feature i really like is the the input are configured to activate when grounded. That will massively simplify the wiring.
    Other new features such as the blue tooth are pretty cool too.

      Can you expand on this, are you saying that the wiring can be simplified over the v2.0? I'm trying to find what you are referencing. If you mean that it is simplified over stock then don't worry about a lengthy reply. I'm running the v2.0 which I love and trying to balance if upgrading for the cell phone is work it. It's close because I'm worried about my bike getting punked while at a show etc. I suppose the alarm on the v2.0 should help but having the cell notification is nice. Curious about range, battery draw for the cell etc.
      I'd like to know if the extra AUX inputs can benefit not running all the AUX on the V2.0 to the single output..... That was the worst part of my wiring was the amount of stuff that I had to wire to that one output. Gauge lights, coils, neutral light, oil light and a couple others......

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  7 років тому

      Wiring is the same as the V2...inputs are ground referenced, and the outputs are 100% isolated from the inputs.

    Lovin the m-units but another point to mention is that its not quite a straight swap for the v2 because while the connections might be a straight swap the actual mounting of the unit is not because they altered the spacing of the mounting holes....great vids tho love them and very informative...regards.

    I posted the same question on the contact form in the website of Motogadget, waiting an answer. I try to post the same here.
    I need to know a simple thing: May i use Motogadget System (M-Unit, Motoscope-Pro, turn indicators, M button and so on) in a Moto Guzzi Lodola Granturismo (235 cc) from the far 1964? I'm restoring it with a little touch of new technology in the instruments and electronics. Thank You in advance!! I love this kind of video!!!

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  Рік тому +1

      Long story short(ish) - If your bike has a 12v system then yes, you can use the Motoscope Pro. If your bike has a 6v system then no, the Motoscope Pro will not work.
      The M-Unit however will work with a 6v and 12v system and of course any lighting works the same way, they can be 6v or 12v depending on the bulbs you use.

    I know this is an old video so i may never get an answer. I have a 77 Yamaha XS650. Ive converted to a permanent magnet alternator. This allows me to run batteryless if i run a small capacitor. I assume i still need to wire in a main fuse between the capacitor and the m unit? Im no electrical guru, and im trying to plan the wiring layout, but i dont want to have anything wired in that wont be needed.

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  Рік тому +1

      Let's skip fuse talk for a moment and get into the operation of the M-Unit itself.
      In theory running an M-Unit in a battery-less system will work but here is something to consider:
      Voltage is key. M-Units require steady 12+ voltage in order to function properly. They are great units but if you have varying/inconsistent voltage you will experience M-Unit operating problems and you could be chasing your tail with a lot of issues that can simply be attributed to voltage. Running a battery-less system even coupled with a capacitor can still allow voltage spikes and drops and most current electrical components don't like that, especially ones that control all of your lights and accessories.
      Hope this makes sense.
      But to answer your question.. when in doubt.. fuse it.

    • @davidvaughn7778
      @davidvaughn7778 Рік тому

      I had considered that in the back of my mind. The good news is if I need to I can run something like the 4 cell or smaller (if there is anything smaller) if needed since I don't plan on using a starter. One thing I hadn't considered with the M unit is that I may not have enough voltage for it to turn on so I can start it.

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  Місяць тому +1

      The ignition control module is a component unto itself. The Mo-Unit is a power distribution module and will supply power to many electrical components you choose to use but it is not an ignition pickup. You will still use your stock/aftermarket ignition.

      The keyless-go feature does provide a method to turn the bike on and off using an Android Smartphone (iPhone support is coming). I have never wired a bike and it was very easy (with help from Stefan on a couple areas lol) Get the ferule crimper!!!!! if you don't have one. I assume it has a SIM card and sends an SMS text like some home burglar alarms can

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  7 років тому +1

      Ok, this is a great question. The alerts are only applicable when you are within Bluetooth range. Which can be anything between 30-100 meters depending on conditions. If they were to send the signal using a different system like GSM it would consume a lot of battery power and the bikes battery would not last long enough. The current bluetooth system only uses a tiny amount of power, but it will still give you an alert when you get back to the bike.

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  7 років тому +2

      It would be great if it could do this, but it can't send via SMS because the rest of the systems needed to support that would consume too much battery power and the bike would need to be on a charger if it was left for more than a day or two. The bluetooth system they use is a low energy system and the new m-Unit blue's standby power consumption is almost the same as the V2.

    Explain what happens if your cellphones dies and bluetooth link is broken? Will your bike switch off while riding?

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  4 роки тому +1

      This question comes up a lot and the answer is that nothing happens, the Keyless Go requires a BT connection to your phone to power the m.Unit on but that's it. Once the m.Unit is on a lost connection will not have any impact. Regardless, you always need either a Key or hidden switch to turn the bike on. Otherwise you could be stranded. You also would not be able to enter the pairing mode on the m.Unit and you couldn't loan the bike out or leave it with a mechanic.

So on the fence about upgrading.......... I have the height to accommodate the vertical inputs now and the cell compatibility sounds awesome. This AUX question will be my tipping point.

      As long as you plan to use a battery you would be good to go with either of the m-Units. They are both excelent, and still the easiest way to wire a bike from scratch. With the RD you won't need all the functions, but there are enough other benifits with the m-Unit I still think its worth it. The choice between V2 and Blue is really just about if you want to be able to use your phone with the bike, the basics are the same between both units.

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  6 років тому

      The signals for the dash indicators come from the individual circuits they are idicating. For example, the high beam indicator is powered from the high beam output, in addition to powering the high beam itself. In the case of the instrument back lighting, and neutral indicator those can be powered by one of the AUX outputs, or the ignition output. If using the ignition output, however, the indicators will turn off with the kill switch.

      Yes, all m-Units can work with toggle switches for headlight, and turn signals...things like starter, and horn really need to be momentary switches, but momentary toggles would work.
      Without knowing exactly what switches you have it is not possible to discuss connections in details, so I'm not really sure how to answer this question. But the m-Unit will work with pretty much any wires, and any switches.

      No, the m.Unit does not replace the ECU. Bikes like your 2014 Triumph have an immobilizer built into the ECU. If you're looking to install an m.Unit on a bike such as this then you must replace the factory ECU with an aftermarket that does not have an immobilizer.

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  4 роки тому +1

      The V.2 is absolecent and hasn't been manufactured in years. The Blue expands on the design and improoves a lot of the shortcomings of the older V.2. The Basic slightly less expensive but is just the same hardware as the Blue with dumbed down firmware. After you've done a few installs it becomes clear that the extra $50 spend on the Blue is quickly returned by the time saved programming them and ease of troubleshooting. Hello, I have a problem with Motogadget m.unit basic. My problem is with "start" ignition input. And have not started the motto. I did a relay ignition but with the same success. I think the output current is weak and can not even feed the small sprout of the ignition relay. Please help. Absolutely everything is related as stated in the instruction in the product box. I put the old m.unit model and everything works perfectly without problems. I'm asking for help
    Thank you

      Hmmm, that sounds like the start output is not turning on. That output should have 30 amps available and that is more than enough to trigger a relay or solenoid. In fact its gross overkill for that application. Before concluding the m-Unit is malfunctioning it is best to do some very simple tests.
      1) Disconnect the input and output wires for the circuit in question.
      2) Use a simple piece of wire as a switch to make sure the input terminal on the m-Unit is getting the correct ground signal. Strip both ends of a piece of wire, insert one end into the m-Unit input, turn the m-Unit on, then touch the other end to ground, you should see the LED light up for that input.
      3) Connect a simple 12v light bulb to the output for the circuit that is not working. Then repeat the input test. The light bulb should light up. Also make note of what the output LED's are doing.
      When troubleshooting, it is very helpful to know what the LED's on the m-Unit are doing when the issue is occurring. That gives a lot of information about what could be causing it.

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  6 років тому

      Yes, the m-Unit will work on a VF750, but just so you are aware, that bike does not have a Capacitive discharge ignition (CDI) but rather a solid state induction ignition. Its not really that important of a distinction, but its worth being aware of because if you want to install a motogadget gauge you don't need to use an ignition sensor, like you would have to if your bike did have a real CDI ignition.

      With the m-Unit blue you can change the way the headlight behaves when the bike is turned on. The headlight always turns off when the starter is pushed, so the starter has as much power as possible. But you can set the headlight to stay off until the start button is pushed or it can turn on as soon as the bike is turned on. I think I found the answer in one of the comments... It seems as it will work also for my bike with no starter/start button and no kill switch.

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  7 років тому

      It is true that it will work with out having a starter button, but the keyless go feature uses the starter button to lock and unlock the bike. If I was doing a kick only project, I would consider adding a button for the start input even though there is no start output or starter involved. The benefit of the start button is that it can operate as the unlock (with keyless go), and the kill switch, and the lock button.
      But of course you could always just go with a conventional ignition key switch if you didn't want to dedicate a handlebar button to the start input.

    I am redoing a Honda CX500 which has reverse voltage... will the M Unit Blue ?

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  7 років тому

      What do you mean by "reverse voltage"? The CX500 as built by Honda is 100% compatible with m-Unit V2.0 and Blue. The only part that can be tricky is that some of the CX500's used a CDI ignition which is controlled by a grounding kill wire to stop the spark, but the m-Unit uses +12V to control the ignition system. To make this work you use an automotive 12V relay with normally closed contacts. The relay contacts are used to ground the CDI kill wire so the bike won't start when the m-Unit is off, and then the AUX (or Ignition output on the Blue) is used to control the relay control coil.

      The m.Unit Blue has two Start outputs that together provide 30 amps. So long as your starter falls within that range it would work.
      If it's more than 30 you could use one Start output to trigger a higher amperage relay. Just be sure that any voltage wring running outside of the m.Unit has fused circuit protection.
      I've work out a diagram for using automotive style Key Start Ignitions. If shoot me an email at techsupport@revivalcycles.com I'll be happy to share it.

    • @MotoErgoSum
      @MotoErgoSum 7 років тому +1

      BLE only draws a few milliamps per hour, so it'd take a while to drain the battery in standby mode. Like any bike that's going to sit for weeks, it's best to put it on a trickle just in case.

    • @RevivalCycles
      @RevivalCycles  7 років тому +2

      Actually it draws less than half of a miliamp... it is 450 micro amps which is 0.00045 amps. This is actually lower than the V2 which draws 480 micro amps when the alarm is active. Based on this it should take something in the ballpark of 6 months to drain a 4-cell. The theoretical math says its over a year, but I wouldn't push it beyond 6 months.

      There are a lot of new things with the blue, more inputs, and more outputs. Having dedicated ignition output with two extra aux outputs for things like heated grips, cooling fans, fuel pumps, phone/gps charger, etc. Also, having phone connectivity makes configuring much easier. I'm sure there are even more benifits to it, but that list alone is worth it for me.

      No this is one thing the Chinese haven't stolen yet, and although I completely understand the temptation of knock off products, it is severely damaging for those of us in the product development world. We spend the money, time and creative energy to make something that the world has never seen, and then as soon as it shows signs of success, it gets poorly copied and sold cheap so the original inventors never recover the development investment. It is a much better plan to support the innovators so they can continue innovating, if we kill off the innovation we'll just be left with a rainbow of cheap plastic Chinese junk.
