  • My twelve-year old self is leaping for joy at starting Ian Livingstone's Forest of Doom Fighting Fantasy. Just as good as I remember from over thirty years ago. The original artwork, the original story, just the way Ian Livingstone intended. The magic is back.

    ABOUT THIS GAME
Only the foolhardy would risk an encounter with the unknown perils that lurk in the murky depths of Darkwood Forest. Yet there is no alternative, for your quest is a desperate race against time to find the missing pieces of the legendary Hammer of Stonebridge - fashioned by Dwarfs to protect the villagers of Stonebridge against their ancient doom.
Computer gaming was in its infancy and it was the early days of tabletop RPGs when Ian Livingstone's The Forest of Doom exploded into bookshops in the early 80s, proudly displaying Iain McCaig’s iconic cover.
Relive the adventures in Darkwood Forest, lovingly updated for PC, Mac and Linux. Presented in full colour with realistic physics-based dice rolling for battles, auto-mapping, an auto-updated adventure sheet and stat keeping.

I love watching the yogscast doing these at Christmas time although they do the actual books ( with someone drawing it as it goes on it's really interesting) so id love to watch these as well when i have the time. Ive played one or two as well and i find the fantasy and storytelling aspect good , only real complaint about the books in general are instant death endings for everything especially when it's for a really vague reason like not having powdered Minotaur horn to stop the mouse from turning into a dragon. Even if you lived in this fantasy world im not sure that using it would occur to you if you did manage to find it in whatever cranny it was in.

Yep. Ian Livingstone has no problem flat out murdering a twelve year old. There is no room for error here. Deathtrap Dungeon was notorious for that. 30+ years later, I have still never beaten it without cheating.

Ironically ive only played two .. one was a app that happens to be death trap dungeon ( i never finished it i might get back to it sometime.) i didn't know that was part of a thing at the time though. These books completely passed me by when i was young but mainly because i live in a small town. The other was the sorcery one they had released.

Lai Quen I hadn't heard of these books, but being a big kid I reckon I can start now, right? ;)

With no real computer games, and D&D still in its infancy, these books were IT at the time. And they still hold up well today.

Forest of Doom was the first FF book I ever read/played. It's neat that they have the books in an on-line format but nothing will beat a physical book.

I know I'm late to the party, but thanks so much for this! I had no idea there was a proper digital version of this old gem.

It's the original artwork by Iain McCaig, colorized. He would later go on to design Darth Maul for the SW prequels.

Insta-like! I found this video incredibly interesting - it's like story time with Dave! ;)
Everyone needs some nose-filters. I reckon that was a superb choice, Childhood Dave.
    I'll be checking in!

Played the original when I was around 12 years old back in the early 80s. Think I will be giving these ago so won't be watching the full video until I have finished myself 💙✌

I loved these books as a kid, I used to get told off at school for rolling dice during reading class, didn't know they had made digital versions until I saw chatter about it in your Fallout 4 livestream

    • @WeeHoursGames

@@WeeHoursGamesyeah I actually started re-collecting them again about 10 years ago, I think I have close to 20 of them but I moved house a couple of times since and they're in a box somewhere with my Dragonlance novels until I get some bookshelves set up in the man cave near the pot belly after I get that installed. They recently (when I say recently I mean in the last 2 or 3 years geez I'm starting to feel old lol) reprinted a lot of them too with fancy new covers but I loved the original artworks and the illustrations inside them too. I think Forest of Doom was the first one I did, If i remember right there was an infinite loop somewhere in the forest maze bit where you could just keep going back and collecting 1 gold each time.
There was a game way back on the original PS1 of Steve Jackson's Deathtrap Dungeon but it wasn't really a representation of the book it was more like a tomb raider type 3d (oldskool 3d) platformer.

The best part of your videos, Dave, is that you can change your voice to play the voice of other characters (younger, older, softer, grumpier), and that is amazing!

If you see this that means you watch old series... (or there's a feature that I don't know about like somebody who subscribed to me and I didn't do anything...)
