Frankly, a Mickey Mouse movie is what we should have gotten for the 100yr anniversary.

I would LOVE a Mickey and Oswald movie similar to Epic Mickey. To bring back forgotten OG characters for a new generation could be something that not only gets butts into theaters, but could be an attempt by Disney to restore their brand. A lot character growth on both sides as Walt's "children" and little brother v. big brother dynamic could be great. It's up to the execs to even allow this.

I have this idea in my head for a Steamboat Willie musical, one that would be similar to the Spongebob musical where it would be human actors but with the features of their animated counterparts incorporated into their costumes. Maybe the story can revolve around a worker on a steamboat with a penchant for music(Mickey), batting heads with his grumpy boss(Pete). Minnie would be the love interest obviously and there'd have to be some new characters added to make up the rest of the ship crew since we can't use Donald or Goofy. Instead of using the animals as instruments, this new version of Mickey would use random objects to play for the animals and his coworkers, which Pete doesn't approve of.

I think it could work with the right script, there were flashes of character development when Mickey was looking up in reverence at Walt’s portrait in Once Upon A Studio, so there’s definitely something there that’s worth exploring. Unlike say Bugs Bunny for example, Mickey’s a bit of a blank slate so you can practically do anything with him, he could be more zany and over-the-top like in the recent Mickey Mouse Shorts or he could be more heart-tugging and earnest like in the aforementioned OUAS, maybe you can fuse a bit of both sides into him in a feature length film to make his character more well-rounded. You could potentially have something on the same level as the Super Mario Bros. Movie from last year if you’re just going to make a feature length advertisement, or maybe even better than that if the corporation can get out of the creatives’ way for once.

I wanna share an idea I have here, since I don't know if I'll ever realize it:
For a while, I thought of what Wish would look like if the Star was the main character instead of Asha (he WAS the best part after all)
After seeing cutscenes from Illusion Island, I wonder... what if MICKEY was the main character, and had Minnie, Donald, and Goofy by his side?
In studying magic, he could be helping a young Star, training it to grant wishes, until one day, the Star hears a wish coming from Rosas. Other stars panic, as its King Magnefico is a magic hoarder... no magic he hasn't cast has ever gone in or out of the kingdom, and ALL wishes are under his lock and key. That prompts Mickey and friends to go rescue Star, even meeting a modern version of the Blue Fairy in the process and helping Asha protect/save/free the wishes.
Not sure how the rest would go, but Mickey for sure would go full magician mode towards the end and unleash a Disney reference palooza upon Magnefico's backside, maybe even wielding the ever iconic keyblade 🤷‍♂️
I dunno, just something that's been on my mind for a while 😅

I always swore I could remember hearing years ago when they released the Runaway Brain short that Disney wanted it to be a testing ground of sorts as a possible concept for a full-length movie. Even if that were all just a false memory on my part it's obvious that nothing ever came out of it, especially with the short itself garnering more controversy than Disney would have expected with its depiction of an "Evil Mickey" enough for them to downplay the short's existence over the years since.
As it stands one of the closest things we've ever gotten to a full-length animated movie for Mickey was that direct-to-video Three Musketeers movie. Arguably his most iconic role in a Disney movie is still as The Sorcerer's Apprentice in Fantasia, though despite always being the biggest highlight of the original Fantasia is was still only one segment in a film made up of many different musical segments.

The comic books tell more and more about Mickey and his friends characteristics, even firthe characters like Horace Horsecollar , that is extremely unpopular but was almost a major character in the old comics. It would be hard to make a Mickey Mouse movie work but I don't doubt it is possible. Far from it really, he does have a lot of potential as a character, even in self contained stories. One of the first ideas I could think of for a potential movie is Mickey Mouse basically getting a burnout, having spread a lot of joy over the years to others but finding it harder to find joy in doing so himself. If such a movie could perhaps depict Mickey as kind of an entertainer I could see that work. We've already seen that in stuff like House of Mouse after all. Whether it'd be internal conflicts like wanting to try something else, external conflicts like outside interference like studios demanding he fits into the same mold all the time, I feel like there's good potential in this for a story about Mickey and his friends trying to find that spark to enjoy making others happy again.

I think that if a Mickey movie should come out, it has to be a "comics Mickey" movie. As a cartoon character, besides meta-stories like Epic Mickey, he dosen't have that much lore screenwirters could develop. But for "comic Mickey" it's another story. He have very dark story with iconic bad guys such as Phantom Blot, or a guy known in the "land of baguette and cheese" (France) as "oscar rapace". Even Eega Beeva could be an interesting character to developp in a movie and, as the Mickey Comics are well known internationaly, putting them on the grand screen should be a good idea, and the money wold flow. "Comic Mickey" as a character is close to the W.D mascott possible, but he deals with adult problem and crimes. He is a good harted hero, but also an adult. As long as they don't try to make him too "modern" and stay true to his character.(basically don't turn him into a jerk in a feeble attempt to make him more relatable)They should definitely focus on the story telling and world building. And it should be a fantasy world, without reference to our real world. Also I think a totally original adventure would be better than having him interact in other Disney stories ...and idk why but I feel like that's the lazy direction they would go in. In a way, Mickey CAN do things Donald and Goofy couldn't, in the sense both could blunder normal situations and make them entertaining, whereas Mickey was sensible and moderate enough in temperament he could get out of true peril. This works better in a video game like Mario's where it's more about playing the game then any character story.

I will say, it is probably easier to make a Donald Duck movie than a Mickey Mouse movie. The main reason I suggest this is because of the Donald Duck comics. These are relatively unknown in the US but very VERY popular in much of Europe, and famous Donald comic artists like Don Rosa or Carl Barks (the creator of Scrooge McDuck who even made his way into Once upon a studio) have plenty of stories ripe for adaptation, either as features or a miniseries of long form featurettes. One which I think could work pretty well is the comic story about square eggs, but of course there are LOADS of stories. Honestly I could also really see The life and times of Scrooge McDuck by Don Rosa be adapted into a miniseries. Point is for the duck characters, there is PLENTY of stuff to pull from. Some of which has already been adapted somewhat in the Ducktales series, but a lot of which is still out there.

Really I think Runaway Brain worked in terms of 'darkness' because that was the whole joke, the contrast of the super squeaky clean and chipper Mickey being placed in a cartoon horror story. I tend to think what ruined Mickey in his later years was not him becoming a nicer character but nothing really challenging it anymore, Pluto and Donald became the fall guys while Mickey just fell out of focus, he's not as interesting unless things are working against his jovial nice guy attitude. The Ruddish shorts got that too.

I truly think Epic Mickey would be a great blueprint for a proper Mickey Mouse movie. It could be reconstructed into a Mickey origin movie as he was a hapless mouse that was discovered by Disney via a train ride. It would then go into the epic Mickey opening sequence and we get a story of a Mickey Mouse who is a star and has been through a lot over the years. However, he also has a harsh lesson about the legacy that he has and the company that he played within. He then gets a renewed sense of understanding his own role in the Disney legacy and an understanding that everyone deserves a chance or two in the spotlight. That would be a good movie for Mickey.

There was a game called Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion, which is the third part of the Epic Mickey series, but only for the Nintendo 3DS. It is about Mickey, who entered a magical castle that was ruled by an evil sorceress who captured Minnie and even all the Disney characters (from Snow White to Rapunzel) and must enter each world to save them. Seems like an interesting premise for a Mickey Mouse movie. Unfortunately, like The Runaway Brain, the game received mixed reviews and flopped in the series. The main reason is due to the lack of levels and boss fights. The only worlds you can enter are Neverland, Agrabah, and Atlantica. The last one is the most difficult of all. It was also a waste of opportunity, as there was concept art of Mickey taking on Monstro the whale from Pinocchio, in the Atlantica level.

I'm genuinely surprised that Walt Disney Animation Studios hasn't made a proper Mickey Mouse movie yet. Seriously, it's the most obvious thing they could do, but... no? And I'm not counting Fantasia and Fun & Fancy Free here, since Mickey wasn't present throughout the entirety of those films, just specific segments.
Now, maybe if Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers didn't go direct-to-video we would've gotten a feature length theatrical Mickey flick, but guess not. Shame really, as alongside Animaniacs: Wakko's Wish, I feel that deserved its own run in the cinema.

I've said thid before but, the Mickeyverse is a goldmine. I don't want another MCU style Cinematic Universe, but like, the Mickey Comics like X-Mickey, Mickey Mouse 2015 HECK there was a comic where everyone EXCEPT Mickey and Minnie got powers, and they weren't childish and plain they were well written. The Duck Avenger, Darkwing Duck, Scrooge and DuckTales, Goof Troop, Quack Pack, House of Mouse and Mickey Mouse works the sensational six are a truly great band of characters, and their universe is huge and amazing.
Also, I kept hearing smth that kinda, lowkey represents a problem in storytelling now-a-days. The "character arc" syndrome, where it seems every character has to start out with a fatal flaw that gets developed and changed throughout the movie. Mickey and friends don't need that. Mickey stories can have arcs, but it really shines when showing how the characters interact. Before the pre-school era, The sensational six had wild personalities that kept bouncing off of each other, and in the other 'Mickeyverse' shows as well, Scrooge Mcduck, The triplets, heck Max Goof has his own shtick. They're like fleshed out stereotypes. We don't need a grand adventure film, all we need is a show staying true to these characters and what they represent. And it can still have dark themes, I recall one quack pack episode going DEEP into faith and religion, using Aliens as a placeholder. The characters dont need huge arcs, they need to experience stuff and have us watch how their respective characters struggle with each experience.
But if they ever do make Mickey Mouse movies, they'll probably cppy marvel. Seeing how big this universe is, they won't pass up the chance.

    • @historiaestmagistravitae.7051
      @historiaestmagistravitae.7051 Рік тому

This, but it would be better to just start with separate things and only then do it as a whole universe. By the way, it's not called the Mickeyverse, it's the Mouseverse, and the Donald Duck universe is called the Duckverse. It would be good to make movies and series based on many Disney comics, but the problem is that Disney has some intolerance towards comics. Mickey would have a big advantage if a series was made about Detective Mickey and Donald about Duck Avenger or Double Duck or Goofy about Super Goof. Scrooge could get a movie or series based on The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck by Don Rosa. And we should not forget the Three Caballeros who are part of Donald's universe. I certainly agree with what you said.

As his girlfriend Minnie Oversees the preparation for the party and dealing with the other characters shenanigans, she notices Mickey is nowhere to be seen in the studio, she goes to thier portrait to find part of the pocture has been cut from the frame. Mickey had been kidnapped! So, with the help of Goofy, Donald and a handful of other favorite Characters travel beyond the studio and into the real world in a race against the clock to save Mickey from this mysterious villain and bring him back home before the Studio reopens!

A different video reviewing Wish actually had an amazing idea for a centennial celebration. It was basically taking the movie of the first Fantasia with Sorcerer Mickey and how he became that, filled with different elements from other Disney movies without making it too much on the nose. Your talk about the Search for Mickey (which definitely should’ve been made) reminded me of the deleted Princess Academy movie which all Disney female protagonists got to interact with official Disney Princesses. Its a shame it got scrapped, considering characters from Pixar like Jessie and Bo Peep were planned to be included too. Imo, Wish was more of a disappointment than anything. I seriously don’t know what the heck Disney was thinking when they scrapped Star boy being Asha’s love interest or especially having BOTH Magnifico and Amaya as an evil Disney couple. But the biggest missed opportunity for this movie was simply the fact Disney didn’t ask Alan Menken to compose the soundtrack, considering how many Disney movies he was involved with and was a major reason why the Renaissance worked. Instead, we get stuck with someone who’s used to pop music and not musical theater or Broadway style music. And I felt the entire thing of giving up your wish made absolutely no sense if you immediately forget what it was anyway. And its clear the citizens are happy and basically worship their king, they don’t seem empty or unhappy without their wishes (not counting Simon’s changed attitude) Like, why have a wish or dream if you’re just going to forget about it anyway?
Yes, I actually had Mickey’s Christmas Carol and the Prince and the Pauper on VHS as a kid! I never realized they were more episode lengthed movies and not full length movies like the others.

Also doesn’t help that in a post pandemic world combined with the prices of movie tickets being at a all-time high, as far as movie theaters are concerned people are finally now voting with their wallets to see which expensive (both from the studios and audiences perspective) are worth watching.

A Mickey Mouse feature film 100% could and should work, and if you don't believe me, take a look at the Mickey Mouse Comic Strip by Floyd Gottfredson, the best stories ever told with that character comes from there, if you need a sample, volume 6 of the hardcover series collecting the strips is a great showcase of all the best aspects of his adventures. Drawing elements from that stories would make for a good comedy adventure, not unlike Indiana jones, and including other appearences of Mickey Mouse in comics the character has 94 years worth of stories to pull from or adapt.
An interesting thing to note is that at one point there WAS going to be a Mickey film, in the 1940s where Mick, Goofy, and Donald join up with a retired parrot belonging to a pirate in order to find buried gold, while Pete tried to steal the treasure from them. World War 2, like so many of Disney's projects, caused the film to be shelved as the studio focused on cheaper productions, however the plot was reworked for a comic book called "Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold" which replaces Mick and Goof with Huey Dewy and Louie. The storyline was scaled back, there gonna be comedic ghosts in the movie, in the comic Pete disguises himself as one. The movie would've ended with Mick and Pete fighting atop an active volcano, the comic just has Pete knocked out by a coconut. The story was Donald's first original comic book, not reprinted from his daily or sunday strip.

A movie about Mickey would be absolutely fantastic! If written well, It would finally allow people to see him with more personality, rather than seeing him as the happy-go-lucky mascot. Mickey used to be mischievous, charming, crafty, witty, intelligent, loving, wholesome, and fun… over time it all got watered down by people who didn’t know how to use him.
But they finally found a team of writers who knew how to embrace his OG quirks when they started releasing the Mickey Mouse shorts from 2013-2023. Mickey was so full of life and personality in that series! If they brought those writers into it (and brought back the extremely talented/charming Chris Diamantopoulos to voice him again), I think they’d have something really special on their hands.
Donald’s (technically) had Ducktales, Goofy’s had the Goofy movies, Mickey and Minnie need their own outlet to shine.

For Disney's 100th anniversary, a Mickey Mouse movie would absolutely have been a better idea than Wish. The only tough part is that, for a MM movie to work, Disney would have to show other sides of MM. They'd have to show moments of emotional struggle, and they'd have to show that MM isn't always a smiley, happy-go-lucky mouse and that he's not always a perfect role model. I mean, it's pretty hard to set up any sort of conflict (the core part of a story) without the protagonist experiencing negative feelings such as doubt, anger, frustration, sadness, or vulnerability. It's not impossible, though. They've managed to succeed at this task with some of the video games such as Epic Mickey or some of the shorts such as Runaway Brain.
Showing other sides of MM would go a long way toward making MM feel less like a face on someone's t-shirt and more like a living, breathing character with an actual personality. There are plenty of examples of company mascots starring in successful movies, such as Mario (already mentioned in this video), Sonic the Hedgehog, or SpongeBob. If those guys can star in successful animated movies, then MM can, too. Disney's just gotta get to work on one, finally.

Mickey Mouse movies based on Floyd Gottfredson comics would be real gold. Especially the clash with the Phantom Blot. Also an animated series about Detective Mickey would be very good to see. By the way, I would prefer a Donald Duck Movie like Goofy has his own movie. I know Donald has his own movie The Three Caballeros and it's definitely one of my favorite animated movies and it's definitely a great movie, but I wish he had his own animated movie focusing on Donald and his nephews because after all Donald is the best parent to his nephews , as depicted in the comics. This would make a good premise like a Quack Pack Movie or something. Also an animated series based on the Carl Barks and Don Rosa comics, as well as animated series related to Duck Avenger or Double Duck would be great to see. But to make it truly based on comic book material and not just references like Ducktales 2017 did (mostly poorly). Goofy could have a series related to Super Goof (shown in one episode of House of Mouse).
Unfortunately, Disney has some major intolerance towards comics and I highly doubt we'll see that, but I just hope there are people who respect comic book material. Although if the movie that Warner Bros. is making about Daffy and Porky is successful, Disney will have to make an animated movie about Donald and Goofy.
