I was on a CSR ship, used to drop off coal at Port Pirie? Thru a drunken haze was an awesome town! One drunken arvo, whilst in port having a BBQ I whinged to the chief engineer about how he never filled the pool. The engineer said "well with the lead smelter etc the water is too dirty". I replied "fill it and I will swim"....He replied "you will die but OK". They filled it and as the water rose it foamed and was a dark brown with some green tinges. After it was full I told the lads I was no longer wanting a swim as I had eaten and it was best to leave it for a while...they grabbed me and threw me in!!!
I love this channel, as a rpl pilot goin onto ppl , my dream is to fly rhe perth to Sydney route , there's so much to learn from your vids mate keep it up
My brain is rattled - I’ve just dived into a ~ ground operations ~ course for AD op’s and knowing nothing about aircraft or pilot talk your video has put some of that theory into a practice demonstration
The DA40 moves the pilot closer to the leading edge of the wing than anyone else, and I love it. Moving the pilot in front of the wing, moves the wing out of the way allowing the most unobstructed views. I just wish the DA40 had an option for retractable landing gear.
Yes the view from the DA40 is incredible. It’s something I miss now I am flying the 62. Twins don’t have anywhere near as good a view out of the window(s)
Mate that was an epic video & trip. Admire your balls taking the water direct route across the bight. Some big sharks down there! In the 90s my biggest claim to fame was Bankstown to Tamworth IFR in a clapped out c182. Best wishes from New Jersey.
Haha. Yes I often hear of great white attacks near Ceduna! I had lots of confidence in the Austro diesel engine in the DA40NG! Great to hear from someone overseas!
@@diamondairtaxis Subscribed. Haven't flown YSSY>YPPH since 2009. Now after retirement and saying goodbye to Part 121 after 40 years.... Your video certainly shows how immensely more "interesting" it is flying the same route in hops compared to the non stop FL380-400 "version". Fantastic video. Happy flying sir.
Yes it is! Very useful. Especially since it’s not always obvious what load gives you the best range in a given wind situation. Let the computers figure it out.
I did get a bit worried at the thought of contaminated fuel for a run over the ocean. I recall that a passenger jet had fuel fouling problems over the ocean and went down. There is a dude who has kayaked around Australia solo and there is a 100 km stretch (perhaps more) across the Bight where you can't land a kayak safely so you just have to bang away without sleep. The rolling swell which looks flat from 10,000 ft can easily be 3 m. Great work by the way. Sensible planning and decisions.
Great comment thanks. Yes it may have been a larger swell than it looked… I’ll be sticking to twin engines over large water crossings in future! Interesting about the kayak! Hard to image 100km where you can’t land it. Wow.
I have flown commercial several times, but have also done over 100 return trips via road since 1970, Perth to east coast (mostly to racing circuits) but would love to do the trip in a light aircraft, preferably overland for the scenery. Great video thanks. Am a bit surprised at how busy a pilot actually is.
The Cirrus doesn’t really fit into what I want to achieve and after much discussions with Utility and a number of other people, I believe the Diamond is the better overall package now and into the future for resale and ultimately buying the DA 50 RG
Well it’s great you are talking to everyone and doing your homework. You should go for a spin in a DA40NG. They are very nice to fly and basically have all the same avionics as the 62/cirrus. The fuel consumption is amazingly small. I flew one from Hobart to Sydney and it only used 120 litres!
Yes a spin doesn’t seems to be a problem and will organise very soon however finding the right flying school in Sydney seems limited as I would like James as my instructor however the availability of aircraft are limited and James would only be able to support my advancement once I have my own DA40, again very much following in your footsteps
WOW when you said you had a bit over 600 kilometres to go over the sea, that worried me but glad you were prepared. I think my first flight on a bigger plane would also be scary over land as where do they land if something goes wrong? Hopefully this year I can buy a ticket. I think the exciting part would be just walking around the airport first. I only just found out that I can go to the airport without a ticket and watch, so I am going to do that in coming weeks. I thought you had to have a plane ticket to get into the domestic terminal. This is exciting, watching this. Best channel I have subscribed to. I bet you never get bored
Just 5 minutes in the air for the first time would be great. Hopeful, I can book a flight to go see my Uncle on the Gold Coast soon. That’s about a bit over an hour flight which would be great for my first time. I could fly all day and night somewhere I recon and not get bored. I love watching plane vlogs.

Great video, thanks for sharing. The only thing I would add is marine handheld radio with red button sending your gps to all ships around, as well as marine traffic app. You'd be surprised how many ships are around, and you'd want to be closer for them to pick you up.
Awesome video Steve! What an amazing trip. I'm hoping to do it myself one day! Was great to see Jandakot, I did my PPL there about 15 years ago. Forrestdale lake was pretty dry then too haha.
Great video, Jandakot is where I am training for my CPL, I just realised I was flying at the same time doing my pre license for RPL. AND yes that dried up lake is forestdale lake😂
Nullarbor Roadhouse has plenty of runway available as an option. right on the coast. as well as fuel if you can burn Mogas. every roadhouse has a long airstrip, Madura Pass, Caiguna, Mundrabilla etc. the scenery on the Nullarbor coast is stunning.
DA-40 NG is a diesel, so Jet A-1 or diesel is fine. No blu-stuff required 🙂 In these hi-tech days, don't forget you can use the higher flying aircraft to relay position as he mentions. You don't have to change to VFR. Its still a requirement for aircraft to monitor 121.5 mHz in remote areas.
Steve, thanks very much for taking the time and effort to make these videos. Apart from the flight, which was epic, I know how long it takes to turn these videos into something even watchable, let alone something well produced and interesting like this. Especially with multiple cameras. One tech question: when you make your departure reports from non-controlled fields and you provide your estimate for the next way point, do you use a manual estimate or do you read it off the G1000? The reason I ask is that in the climb my Garmins will estimate a later arrival time than what I actually I achieve once at cruise speed…
Thanks Justin - yes it’s quite a lot of effort to produce these videos so I really appreciate your comment. Ok as for the next waypoint estimate - correct the G1000 creates its estimate based on the current ground speed, which when in a climb is going to be incorrect, especially if you have a long cruise segment. So I use the Nav log within ForeFlight (or Avplan or whatever) to lookup the “leg” time (which factors in the climb and cruise speeds) and then I just manually add that leg time in my head to create the next waypoint estimate. Hope that makes sense.
Ceduna Steve, never heard it pronounced ‘sed-oo-na’ before, it’s usually ‘sed-you-na’. Next time bring a fishing rod in case you spend a day there. 😊Incidentally, the town of Forrest is in the Nullarbor plain, Nullarbor literally meaning ‘no trees’.
Great video , cheers. All well and good knowing exactly where you are if you ditch halfway across the Bight , problem is there is no one to rescue you for days . Be interesting to know the difference in flight time if you hugged the coast .
@@diamondairtaxis Cheers for the reply. That was the first vid of yours I had seen. I have since watched a few others and noticed over water flights don't bother you .
A giggle hat provides a flat brim that you can use to shield the eyes. Cut one up for the headphones and even consider removing the crown would provide the ideal pilot's hat for managing the sun's rays. With tiny head movements the pilot can fly into the sun with the eyes completely shielded.
That was fantastic, best video yet I think. Great editing and great commentary especially with the overlays and close ups of the NXi. The Ceduna - Esperance leg was a highlight. Is the windscreen in the NG UV blocking? Thanks for the effort in putting this video together.
Great comment. Much appreciated and thanks for noticing the extra work that went into it! I believe it is UV filtering but I do need to check. On my 62 I have jet shades which definitely block UV and solar heat transfer.
Interesting use of technology. Flown that route [not the over water bit in a single] a number of times, occasionally with just an adf and a clock. A suggestion/plea; perhaps tidy up the cockpit of unrestrained paraphernalia that could easily jam the controls.
Wow. ADF and clock would be a bit more stressful. Good suggestion on the clutter. I think as the flight progresses I move more and more (snacks usually) into the front and forgot to move things back. They could pose a hazard.
@@diamondairtaxis I owned a Bonanza A36 for a couple of years in the mid-80's and flew west to east (and return) 18 times during that short period. I had farms in WA and Qld and took many different routes. Part of my IFR training included going from Birdsville to Alice Springs across the desert at night (with an instructor). It was a great 2 years.
55:05 😅Yeah, that would be really interesting! Why wouldn't you report you were turning inland to glide northwards to ditch as close to shore as possible, rather than stuck out in the middle of the Bight? OK you did address that a few seconds later. I just wonder if you communicated your position as you glided they would know your position anyway, so if for any reason rescue didn't show up, you would be closer to shore.
Possibly… hard to know what would result in the best outcome. I have a personal locator beacon in my life jacket so in theory they should be able to find me anywhere…

Nah was ferrying my DA40NG to its new owner in Perth. Would love to do the trip in the 62 sometime. The 40NG is Jet A1 burning. That’s why I went Ceduna to Esperance. Other option was Forrest further north and Kalgoorlie. I am not sure if Nullarbor Roadhouse has Jet A1??
@@diamondairtaxis That's what I thought. I spent some time plotting out the trip - for flightsim - but trying to stick to the scenic, coastal route along the nullarbor and checking the appropriate sites for J-A availability. It’s not pressurised. The higher ceiling is possible due to a turbocharged engine and providing the occupants are using portable oxygen. The DA62 goes up to 20,000 feet.
The DA40NG (Jet A1 burning diesel engine) is excellent. I’ve not flown the Archer2 but you should do a trial flight of the DA40NG. I love the bubble canopy and associated visibility. It’s amazing.
I recently sold my Piper PA-38 Tomahawk to someone in WA, I had someone ferry it to Jandakot, Camden-Griffith-Mildura-Port Augusta-Ceduna-Nullabour Hotel-Forest-Kalgoolie-Jandakot. Much faster trip in the DA40!
Yes I print the navlog from FF and then fill it in with pen. It surprises me that I can’t do this digitally within FF… feels like I’m missing something!
@@diamondairtaxis Thanks. Didn't realise you could print it. Yes I have been searching everywhere for a screen where it records actual time over waypoints. Something to ask for. Appreciate your reply. Cheers. Tim.
So I use two cameras - insta360 X3 and GoPro. And I also use screen recording on my iPad. Then after I add all of this into Final Cut Pro where I manually synchronise the videos (painful step), and then I can easily switch between the videos or show multiple videos in parallel (split screen). Thanks for watching!
Diamond aircraft do not have a red beacon. So the white strobes are the anti collision lights. Part 91 MOS 26.22 requires anti collision lights to be on immediately after engine start until shutdown. This is also consistent with the aircraft checklist.
I use OzRwy and watching a few pilots using Foreflight has made me want to get it instead of renewing OzRwy later this year. It seems a lot simpler and more intuitive, Oz just looks prettier which doesn't help you when you're flying.
I much prefer FF over the local products. It’s such a great app and the support is excellent. There are lots of detailed reasons that I won’t go into but I do recommend you try it (if you haven’t already). Note: I have only used Avplan in the past.
One if the key benefits of FF is that it communicates seamlessly with the Garmin panel equipment. So, prepare a flight plan on your iPad, file it with a touch of a button and then send it to the panel. OZR doesn’t talk to the Garmin Mind you, ForeFlight recently acquired OZR. I would like to think there will be some exchange of features. The only thing missing from ForeFlight in my opinion is the airport WebCams.
g'day Steve, just stumbled on your vids. I can't find any information on who you are or what you do. Are you a taxi service? Do you charge for flights? Perhaps you are a cargo plane?

No… best not to think about it!
Great work. Do you write a manual fuel log and time at waypoints? I have looked everywhere but GP or FF won't do this?
Yes I print the navlog from FF and then fill it in with pen. It surprises me that I can’t do this digitally within FF… feels like I’m missing something!
@@diamondairtaxis Thanks. Didn't realise you could print it. Yes I have been searching everywhere for a screen where it records actual time over waypoints. Something to ask for. Appreciate your reply. Cheers. Tim.
Absolutely love your content ! Would love you meet you one day I am a Recreational Pilot Based in Bankstown . Keep up the videos I watch them all!
Awesome feedback thanks! Come say hi if you see me sometime.
No fuel challenges?
250kmphr as the crow flies😗 👌
Just doing some maths in my head. Driving 300klms a day so can see a bit of the Country = roughly 6 weeks on the road there and back without issue! 👍
Not sure i understand the comment but thanks for watching!
There's nothing to see. No one does just 300 km a day.
Fair play, thats a long bloody haul even in a business class seat..
Sure is!
What app/ equipment are you using to be able to switch cameras and share screens?
So I use two cameras - insta360 X3 and GoPro. And I also use screen recording on my iPad. Then after I add all of this into Final Cut Pro where I manually synchronise the videos (painful step), and then I can easily switch between the videos or show multiple videos in parallel (split screen). Thanks for watching!
Why are your strobes on before taxi?
Diamond aircraft do not have a red beacon. So the white strobes are the anti collision lights. Part 91 MOS 26.22 requires anti collision lights to be on immediately after engine start until shutdown. This is also consistent with the aircraft checklist.
Why are you running foreflight and not Australian AvPlan or Oz rw? Just curious …
OZR doesn’t talk to the Garmin
Mind you, ForeFlight recently acquired OZR.
Hi there. I am in the process of establishing an air taxi service (Diamond Air Taxis). Once setup, you will be able to book flights online then turn up and go. In the mean time, I am just flying privately...
this is my dream..
It’s pretty awesome!
Nice Job Captain , Glad Ya Didn"t Have too Ditch in Bass Straight 50 Mies out at Sea
I Suppose You Feel More comfortable Flying over Land Do You ? At least you know you Could Land some where If someting wen"t Wrong
Im supprised How Far you Fly above the Clouds , But I know nothing about Flying, I Would Be Hugging the Tree Tops just Incase LOL
Yes I’m glad about that also! Flying over land generally provides more options for a forced landing. Unless it’s mountains!
U flew over my house lol in perth
Great!
Great range but my bladder does not stretch that far anymore
That's what travel johns are for!
Great video, where do you keep your piss bottle?
Travel John’s are a great product!
nullabor highway is a good enough runway for anyone
True. I didn’t see it, but assume it was there to the north somewhere!
Love the vids, Steve. Your engagement with the camera is like the viewer is in the passengers seat. It would be great on some of the trips to get footage of the facilities (FBO?) at these smaller airports I will never vist (not a pilot here). Seeing a refulliing occasionlly would also be interesting. Get some YT shorts happening to aid channel growth - not an ad or bot, this could help - ua-cam.com/video/mo_KM9sncrQ/v-deo.html
Thanks for the feedback and tips. There aren't many FBOs here (only at larger airports). But yes refuelling and basic facilities I could capture in future vids.
fule truck guy show you in txt a pic of his measurement stick lol
Turned out it was a bowser and not a truck. It didn’t run out and apparently they keep a bit extra for RFDS… good to know
Definitely can't pull over and take a leak.
Nope!
The fuel truck should have a filter.
Of course!! I was joking (sort of)
i'd be up there tryna find ufo's
Mate, land at Whyalla, top up and get what you can at Ceduna. No brainer.
Also, never tell your engine your over water or tiger country.
:)))
what happens if you need a shit?
You hold it or land!
