  • What if you have an old CPU, which level of performance is not high enough, and you do not want to
    replace it with a new one, especially if it is necessary to replace a motherboard and RAM modules too? Then overcloсking your CPU and RAM may help to increase the level of performance of your PC. Just do not forget about cooling - you will need a decent CPU cooler at the very least.

    You can also delid the lynnfield xeons for lowering temperatures, the i7/ i5 / i3 have soldered IHS but all xeons are still glued in. I got about -15celsius after delidding my x3470. And now i can overclock 0.2ghz higher safely. One more thing the Tcase temperature is measured under the IHS, you cannot see the temperature in operating system, it usually is about 10celsius cooler than core temperature, so basically less than 85celsius should be fine, atleast from my experience never had a lynnfield fail when i stay under this. Very cool video and new info expecially the part about x3440/x3450 northbridge frequency.

      I'm pretty confident the i7/i5/i3 are soldered. I delided a few of them and it was for sure thermal paste. Same for the xeons.

  • @linuxlinux3816

    Maximum Tcase temperature is 72.7C, not the same as Tjunction which can safely be far higher as long as Tcase is kept below 72.7C.

    • @starstreamgamer3704
      @starstreamgamer3704  3 роки тому

      You are right. Tjunction temperature for these CPUs is somewhere between 90-95 °C. But it is not safe to use CPU when it is so hot. It may be damaged. Tcase is a recommended safe temperature for everyday use.

    Thanks bro! really cool video. I have same Asus board with lame i3-540. so a x3470 will be huge upgrade. Do you think I should buy 4x4 GB or 2x8 GB Dimms? I heard that 4 Dimms may run in Quad-Channel vs Dual-Channel mode, for more bandwith, but then 2x8 might be easier to overclock. I wanna buy Mushkin DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24. Also, check out SNOWMAN CPU cooler on Ali-Express, it's VERY cheap but allegedly pretty good one.

      @starstreamgamer3704  4 роки тому +1

      Hi! Thank you. Yes, X3470 is a much better CPU than i3-540.
      I would choose 2x8 GB if these modules are not too expensive in comparison with 4x4 GB. Many MoBos have problems with memory overclock when all 4 DIMM slots are occupied. Usually it is easier to overclock 2 modules.
      Snowman MT-6 is good cooler, but it is less effective than some more massive coolers with 5 or 6 copper pipes and copper plates.

    Just wanna say this is the best tutorial to oc 1156 cpu so far and im following it rn. But i have a question im using an msi p55 gd45 and an i5 750 and aiming for at least 3.8 to 4.0 oc. Lets assume i could do 3.9 stable do you think thats a safe oc for this motherboard?

    • @starstreamgamer3704
      @starstreamgamer3704  2 роки тому +1

      I am really glad I could help.
      As concerns your motherboard, it is a basic model with just a few power phases and without a VRM heatsink. It's ability to function stable and safe at 3,9 GHz will depend a lot on the CPU voltage. Some i5 samples can easily hold 3,9 GHz at 1,25 V (or even lower), which should be OK for this board. But even in this case I would recommend to install a custom heatsink or at least a fan, which will be cooling a VRM of the board.
      If your i5 will need more than 1,25 V, I would say stay within this limit and reduce core frequency a bit to ease up on the board.

      You are welcome. Yes, of course. You have a decent MoBo. Gammax 400 is not the best cooler for old Xeons, but it is good enough to let X3470 achieve something around 3,6-3,7 GHz. I'd recommend not to exceed 1,25 V.

    I enjoyed your UA-cam video.
    I have Questions about M/B.
    I know that the main board of Asrock p55 Exteme4 can originally use up to 16 gigabytes of RAM, but it can actually use up to 32 gigabytes per RAMslot, recognizing 8 gigabytes per RAMslot.
    By any chance, do you know that the ASUS P7P55D-E board series also recognizes 8 gigabytes for each Ramslot?

      @starstreamgamer3704  4 роки тому

      Hi. Thanks.
      I think that it is a CPU which recognizes RAM. In case of LGA 1156 memory controller is inside CPUs, so the amount of supported RAM will mostly depend on it.
      According to the official Intel site, all X34XX Xeons support up to 32 GB of RAM.
      But if you want to use 32 GB of RAM, I would recommend to choose dual rank modules. Just in case.

    Hi! Thank you for the video! Just have some questions before I get started OC'ing. Maybe you can help? :) It's not easy finding information about overclocking these old CPU's. I have the ASUS P7H55-V motherboard with a Cooler Master Hyper TX3 Evo. It looks like the cooling for the VRM is smaller on this board than the P7P55D. Do you still think it's an OK motherboard to overclock with? I hope the CPU cooler should be sufficient. The CPU is an I7 870. I'm currently running the auto OC at 3.3Ghz and the temperature is around 41°C idle. I'm going to repaste it with Noctua NT-H1. Hopefully that will help. It has not been repasted for years. How much OC is possible, while stable? 4Ghz? :) I have 3 intakes, and one exhaust in the case, so hopefully that is ok. I'm running 32GB of RAM in quad channel, but it only clocks in at 1333Mhz, is it possible to run it at 1666Mhz? The ram is labeled 1600Mhz. Ballistix BLS8G3D1609DS1S00.16FND. Timing 9 - 9 - 9 - 24. Best regards, Ulvens. :)

      Hi! Glad I could help.
      1) The bigger is the VRM, the better. But small VRM should still be capable to provide some overclocking potential. Make sure your VRM is not overheating. Let your CPU run any stress test and try to carefully touch VRM heatsink. If it is too hot and burns your fingers, reduce the CPU frequency/voltage.
      2) Each CPU sample is different, so I can not say for sure, what is the best result for yours. Typically 870s can be overclocked to 3,5-4,2 GHz, depending on their condition and silicon quality. So if you want to know what is the best settings for your sample, you have to determine it by yourself.
      3) BLS8G3D1609DS1S00 is a decent memory model. It should easily run at 1666 MHz and even higher. 1333MHz is a maximum base RAM clock frequency for LGA 1156. But you can overclock RAM up to 2000-2100 MHz. Just do not forget about timings. Increasing RAM frequency usually demands to increase timings too.

      i5s, i7s and Xeons are basicaly the same CPUs. So there is no difference between them in terms of overclocking method.
      As to the Gigabyte board, it's one of the most affordable P55 MoBos with just a few phases and without any heatsinks. If you want to OC your i5-750 on this board, I'd recommend to provide as intensive cooling as possible. i5 is bit less power hungry due to the lack of HT, but I'd still suggest to stop at 3,6 GHz or lower.

      It might still be the power supply fault. If it is old, it may cause some stability issues.
      If your PS is new, then the problem is probably in your MoBo.
      At first, try to overclock only BCLK and lower CPU multiplier down to a minimum.

      Hello.
      What do you mean by "standart cooling fan"? Intel’s stock cooler? What RAM model do you have? What is the current temperature of your CPU (idle and under load)?
      Your motherboard is not the best one for CPU overclocking. It has only a few VRM power phases and no heatsinks. With a decent CPU cooler you could perform a moderate CPU overclock (up to 3,2-3,4 GHz, depending on the specific CPU sample).
      But you can still overclock RAM and memory controller. Let me know what CPU cooler and RAM you use and I will try to offer you the best solution for overclocking your PC.

      This is a decent memory model. It can be easily overclocked. Not sure what is the maximum frequency your modules can reach, but I believe that they should work flawlessly at 1900 MHz.
      So if you want to overclock your system without raising CPU temperature, you should do the following steps:
      1) Boot BIOS
      2) Go to "Ai Tweaker" tab
      3) Set "Ai Overclock tuner" to "Manual"
      4) Then set the following setting as shown below:
      CPU ration setting - 16
      BCLK frequency - 188
      DRAM frequency - DDR3-1880 MHz
      DRAM voltage - 1,65
      All other parameters should be set to "Auto".
      5) Then go to "DRAM timing control" and change a few options as follows:
      DRAM CAS# latency - 10
      DRAM RAS# to CAS# latency - 10
      DRAM RAS# PRE time - 10
      DRAM RAS# act time - 28
      6) Go to "Exit" tab and press "Exit & save changes" -> "Yes"
      7) Try to boot your PC. Launch AIDA64 stablility test. Watch for CPU and MoBo temeratures. CPU temp should be less than 75 °C, MoBo temp should be less than 50 °C.
      P. S. If your PC is not able to boot, don't worry, just press the "MemOK!" button, which is located in the upper right corner of your MoBo (right above 24-pin power connector). It will let you load BIOS default settings. Then you should change some settings as follows:
      CPU ration setting - 17
      BCLK frequency - 177
      DRAM frequency - DDR3-1770 MHz
      DRAM voltage - 1,65
      DRAM CAS# latency - 10
      DRAM RAS# to CAS# latency - 10
      DRAM RAS# PRE time - 10
      DRAM RAS# act time - 28

      Hi. CPU temperature depends on the quality and the size of a CPU cooler. These old Xeons, when overclocked, need big coolers, which can dissipate all the heat that creates a CPU.
      MB temperature slightly depends on a CPU cooler, but it mostly depends on airflow intensity in your PC case - you need to install more fans and/or increase the speed of the fans you already have.

      Hi. Thanks. From my own experience about 90% of these old Xeons can reach 4.0 Ghz without any problems. The only difference is that some of them need only 1.3 V, while others may need up to 1,35-1,4 V.
      RX 580 is an optimal choice for this CPU. There are a few games where X3470 (OCed to 3,6-3,8GHz) will be a small bottleneck. These are the games, which can utilize only 4 threads, like Far Cry 5 and New Dawn, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Minecraft etc. While in many other games your GPU will be a bottleneck most of the time. To make this CPU a strong bottleneck at 1080p, you need at least GTX 1080 or RX 5600 XT.

      Hi! This MoBo has a pretty poor VRM quality. It's hard to recommend overclocking using this board. You can try, if you wish, though. I think it should have all the needed funtionality for OC. A mild overclocking of 750 should not be a problem for this board, like 3,2-3,5 GHz. And do not forget about RAM, overclocking RAM does improve performance as well.
      For this kind of OC any tower cooler with 4 copper heat pipes should be enough.

    hola si subo la frecuencia base del xeon x3440 de 2.5 a 3 cuantos grados sube tengo temperatiras de 40 estables y 60 max con el 3440 sube mucho si lo dejo en 3,0?

    • @starstreamgamer3704
      @starstreamgamer3704  3 роки тому +1

      A CPU temperature mostly depends on the voltage level. If you will be able to keep the same voltage level at 3,0 GHz, then the temperature will be just a little bit higher (+2-3 °C). But if you have to increase voltage in conjunction with frequency, then you should expect significantly higher CPU temperature (+7-10 °C), depending on how high the voltage will eventually be increased.
      But 3,0 GHz is not too high frequency for X3440, so I do not think you should worry about it's temperature. Usually X3440s need just a little bit higher voltage to reach it. Some "golden" samples can function at 3,0 GHz at a very low voltge level. So you should try by yourself.

    • @starstreamgamer3704

      The exact voltage level depends on a certain CPU sample. For example one can function at 1,20 V while the other one may need 1,25 V to function at the same frequency.
      What you can do is leave the voltage at "Auto" and detect the real voltage value, set by your motherboard. Then you can try to lover voltage down by one or two steps.
      3,0 Ghz is not too high frequency for X3440, so you can try it without any problems.
      Typically 3,5-3,6 Ghz is the frequency value which demands significantly higher voltage for these Xeons.

      Well, if you overclock only cores (via CPU multipler increase), the difference will be marginal. But if you overclock your CPU via BCLK, it will also increase the speed of CPU memory controller. And such an overclocking will be twice as effective. Overclocking memory in cojunction with cores and MC will provide significanly better results. That is why comprehensive CPU overclocking is the best decision. The speed of cores themselves is important, but to achieve the best results you need to overclock MC and RAM too.

    • @starstreamgamer3704
      @starstreamgamer3704  2 роки тому

      Hi. Thanks.
      1. 3,48 GHz to 4 GHz is ~15% higher core clock speed. But CPU performance depends not only on it's core clock speed but some other factors as well (like RAM and NB). So 15% higher core clock almost never corresponds to 15% better CPU performance. Usually it's about 7-8%. So it's up to you to decide whether it's worth purchasing a new MB for getting these additional 7-8% or not.
      Remember that maximum CPU core clock speed depends not only on a MB quality, but on a CPU itself as well. Some samples overclock better than the others. So there's no guarantee you will be able to overclock yours to 4 GHz even on P7P55D. 3,8 GHz is usually doable frequency for almost every CPU sample on this platform.
      2. Usually there is no problem increasing RAM speed to it's default frequency - 1600 MHz in your case. In some cases you can even surpass stock frequency, especially if we are talking about some gaming RAM with built-in XMP profile. All you need is a MB which supports RAM OC.
      3. If your PSU has dual 4 pin connector (4x2 pin - 8 pin in total) it should not be a problem to connect it to a MB with 8 pin input.

      I am afraid Intel cooler is not sufficient for overclocking, especially with i7. If you will not exceed maximum safe CPU voltage (1,35V), overclocking is safe. If you want to overclock your CPU, I'd recommend to purchase some tower cooler with at least three copper pipes.

If you don't want to overclock your CPU (only RAM), then you should increase BCLK and decrease CPU multiplier at the same time.

      You have a pretty good MoBo and a decent cooler, so you will be able to overclock your CPU. I would not recommend you to exceed 3,6 Ghz core frequency for your system. Focus on increasing BCLK frequency.
      As concerns your RAM, I think 1800-1850 MHz at 11-11-11-28 should be doable. But since you are using 3 RAM modules, I am not sure you will be able to reach such high frequency. My P7P55D was able to overlock 2 or 4 modules higher than 3. So you'd better try 1600 Mhz 10-11-11-28 at first.

      All MoBos based on P55 chipset can overclock CPUs. The possibility to reach 3,3 GHz will depend on the specific CPU sample. Some of them can easily work at this frequency while maintaining low voltage. But others need higher voltage and thus better cooler.

      Yes, you can overclock both CPU and RAM. But this motherboard does not have VRM heatsinks. Moderate overlock - 3,6 Ghz for CPU and 2000 MHz for RAM - should be OK for P55DE3. But, if you want to overlock your CPU higher than 3,6 GHz, you will need to install additional fan (or at least heatsink) on the VRM zone.
      Don't worry about RAM heatsinks, if you are not going to raise RAM voltage higher than 1,65 V. For newer DDR3 modules 1,6 V will be more than enough. Some of them can even work at 1,5 V and still are able to achieve 2000-2200 MHz.

      I'd suggest you to raise RAM timings up to 11-11-11-30 CR2 (2N) at first. If it won't help, try 11-12-12-30 CR2. I am not sure this RAM could operate at 1800 MHz, so try to lower RAM frequency by one step, if higher timings won't make any difference.
      If none of the two timing modes helps (as well as lowering RAM frequency), the problem is most likely in the motherboard. So lower BCLK frequency down to 165-175 MHz.
      The last thing you should blame for this problem is a CPU. Some of them might be faulty, but it happens extremely rare.

      Well, a cooler with 3 copper pipes is not powerful enough for i5-750. These old CPUs were quite hot even back in 2009. Now the thermal interface under the IHS degraded, which cause even higher temperatures.
      You can try to lower CPU voltage manually. Some motherboards automatically set it too high, which leads to higher temperatures.
      4 heat pipes is the minimum overclocked Lynnfield CPUs need to preserve
      tolerable temperatures. Delidding CPU is another way to drastically decrease it's temperatures.

      Majoriy of motherboards, based on H55, can perform CPU and RAM overclock. Check the BIOS of yours. There should be a section called "OC tweaker", "Cell Menu" etc.

      Then your motherboard do not support OC. There were a few entry level models, which BIOS was cut down in terms of OC functionality due to weak VRM.

    can you overclock cpu on hp 304bh?

      Not sure about this one. This motherboard was a part of a minitower PC, which was equipped with i5-660. I won't be surprised if this MoBo do not have overclocking caspabilities.

    how about i5 760?

    • @starstreamgamer3704

      I had i5-760. I has only 4 threads, while i7 860-880 and X3440-X3480 have 8 threads. Hyperthreading significantly improves their performance, as many modern games and apps can use it properly.

    I have a core i7 870 and my motherboard is intel dq57tm. Can I overclock?

    • @starstreamgamer3704
      @starstreamgamer3704  3 роки тому

      Judging by the looks, this board has a very poor VRM. So I would not recommend to overclock your CPU using it. You can overclock your RAM though.
