מהו פחד? ידועה אימרתו של רבי נחמן מברסלב: "כל העולם כולו גשר צר מאוד והעיקר לא לפחד כלל."
מהי המשמעות של המשפט הזה? והרי אם העולם דומה לגשר צר אז כל בר דעת שהולך על הגשר יפחד ליפול ולהיפך, רק בהמה חסרת דעת תעלה על הגשר ללא פחד!
אומר רבי נחמן מברסלב: אם יגידו לאדם שילך על שביל ברוחב מטר בלא לצאת מהקווים, בוודאי שיעשה זאת ללא כל קושי. אך אם לפתע ירימו את אותו שביל לגובה מאה מטר, ולא ישימו גדר משני צדדיו, אף אדם לא יסכים לעלות על הגשר!
ומדוע בעצם? והרי כשהגשר היה נמוך היית בטוח בעצמך שלא תיפול!
זה כוחו של הדמיון. שהוא בעצם האויב הגדול של הרציונל ושל האדם. ואע"פ שבאמת אין לאדם מה לדאוג ולפחד היצר הרע מדמה לו בורות עמוקים. וזה "כל העולם כולו גשר צר מאוד והעיקר לא לפחד כלל..."
כשאנו יודעים את דרכי הפעולה של האויב הגדול שלנו, היצר הרע, זה כבר חצי פתרון. כי אם נעיין בעצמינו נראה שהרבה דברים שדמיינו במחשבתינו שיכולים לקרות - ופחדנו מהם, חלפו מבלי שהדמין התחיל להתפתח לידי מציאות. כיון שזה כוחו של היצר הרע, להלחם בנו פסיכולוגית כשהוא רוצה הוא אומר לנו להסתכל למעלה, לראות כמה אנחנו רחוקים, כשמטרתו הפוכה אז הוא מפנה את מבטנו ללמטה, לראות כמה הספקנו כבר.
