Well, the name of Lee Van Cleef is pronounced just like the word beef.
The lady who is was assaulted in those flashbacks played Lee's sister.
Meanwhile, found a great sale on this trilogy on 4K this month and the results are fantastic.
All three movies are classics for a reason. I love them. Really glad you enjoyed watching them for the first time. Great direction, acting, cinematography. Glad you pointed out the great shots in Good, The Bad and The Ugly. I have the 4K of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly so can't wait for the other two to get the 4K treatment. Great review, thank you!
The greatest trilogy of All-Time! First two films are coming to 4K from Kino sometime this year!
I will definitely be reviewing and unboxing both those on my channel, so excited!
I can't wait for those 4Ks now!
@@midlevelmedia Hopefully, Paramount or Kino will release Leone's... ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST... in 4K.
Once Upon A Time in the West, you must not miss!
This is one of the few classic westerns I’ve actually seen before and it’s great. I used to own the whole trilogy on DVD, but that’s long gone at this point. Would be cool to rewatch them.
Loved this trilogy! Need to rewatch it soon !
Even though I haven’t watched the entire film, I was about to purchase the 4K back in November, but didn’t get it cause I didn’t want to wait for the backorder.
Django is freaking awesome! Haven’t got the 4K. When I told my old man the price is $60 here in Canada, he said, “They can keep it.”
The extended cut of "The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly", should also have been in 4K. The extended Blu-Ray is unplayable for many in UK.
The significance of the flashback with the woman was that it was Lee Van clefs sister. That’s why he had a watch with picture of her as well at the end. Might wanna watch the movie again Ken🤠😉
Checked out the price for the 4k with the slipcover after watching this video. 100 plus dollars.
Dude. It's ridiculous.
Would had loved to hear you compare the Kino version to the Italian 4K Cult releases.
Kino adjusted and toned down the coloring which seems more natural and realistic yet the 4K Cult ones look crisper and more filmic to me.
Wasn't even aware of another release.
The woman in the Flashback is Mortimer's (Lee van Cleef) sister. That's why he was so focused to get Indio. To get revenge for the murder of his sister.
Thanks Ken. Great way to start Western Month. BTW, before Clint did his spaghetti westerns, he stared on the Raw Hide TV show. I understand why the films are called a trilogy but I don't know many trilogies where the actors played different characters.
You should watch The outlaw Josey wales, another one of my favorite Clint Eastwood movie
I agree !
Would that be a good Clint Eastwood film to review on my channel?
@@megamikethemovieman oh ok, I’ll also check out your channel.
@@mustafajilanipiano thank you and enjoy.
Great vid Ken, I'm really looking forward to checking out The Good, The Bad and the Ugly in 4K.
My favourite is a fistfulof dollars mainly because its shorter than the others.
Some of the reasons that TGTBATU is the least favorite of some of the commenters on here, are the exact reasons why it is my favorite. I love the build-up, the journey, the cinematography. I don't even recognize the time. Today's movies have way too much non-stop action with weaker storylines. (Not ALL, I know.)
Definitely a very well directed film with a great story! I just connected with the first two more.
I just watched The Good, The Bad and the Ugly for the first time last night. I can see why it's an iconic and influential movie but I certainly agree with some of the criticisms, particularly about the film's length.
I'm fine with longer movies but this film was unnecessarily too long. The story seemed to wander all over the place. In my view, the entire segment about the civil war and blowing up the bridge didn't need to be in the movie at all.
I enjoyed the film and I'm glad I saw it. But I certainly didn't love it.
I’ve always preferred Few Dollars More over Good Bad Ugly but the whole graveyard scene is one of the greatest scenes in film history.
Wish they would redo Once upon a Time in the West….my all time favorite western
They did and it is UNFORTUNATELY terrible.
I keep hoping for a UK release of this. No HDR on the disc is putting me off because the cost of importing is so expensive and HDR is a big selling point of 4K
Excellent job. Check out Leone once upon a time in the West.
Just finally bought the slipcover for TGTBTU lol. Some dude is custom making them.
Had to now that I have the slips for the other two 4k dollars and High Plains Drifter dangit
The same actors coming back and playing different characters would confuse me soooo bad lol.
I bet they look amazing in 4K, seeing the dustiness of the sandy, desert landscapes must add so much immersion to these films
The Good the Bad the Ugly on 4K is it cut down version of the movie I recommend the Blu-ray version instead
Good reviews here Ken. I need to go back and watch these again. I have the blu ray trilogy from 2009.
If you liked "A fistful of dollars" and "For a Few Dollars More" you should watch Kurosawa's Yojimbo and Sanjuro. The man with no name was based in part on Kurosawa's Yojimbo.
I’ve never seen Sanjuro but Fistful of dollars IS as much a western remake of Yojimbo as magnificent seven was the seven samurai. I can almost agree that fistful of dollars is the best of the bunch. Good bad and the ugly bc of the cinematographer and score… it’s damn good and probably technically better. For a few dollars more did not leave an impression on me AT ALL. I think seeing Lee van cleef as his angel eyes characters is so damn good. Side note. I think the highlights are too blown out in many spot to actually do an HDR color grade. That’s the impression I had
Would that be a good one to review on my channel?
@@megamikethemovieman any of the above mentioned movies are worth talking about. Whether it’ll get you a bunch of clicks might be another story
@@robertfaulkner1824 I just reviewed the good, the bad and the ugly and I don’t think many people watched it.
“When I get paid I always see the job through”
It's a great line!
I also like how he’s called Angel eyes as he shouts no angel eyes and pulls the pillow over his head and finishes him
I love The Man With No Name Trilogy! I also like Fistful the best, followed by Few Dollars More, and then The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. The first two are more straight-up movies, while The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is more of a movie-nerd movie (I mean that with no offense, and with all due respect). I got The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly on 4K pretty much right away, and I still wasn't able to get the slipcase! I've had the other 2 on blu ray as part of a Man with No Name set for awhile now, but the quality of them leaves much to be desired. That's why I'm super excited for the new 4Ks of them that Kino is supposed to release this year. Two other Leone westerns you've gotta watch are Once Upon a Time in the West and Duck You Sucker (aka A Fistful of Dynamite, aka Once Upon a Time the Revolution). Looking forward to seeing what other Westerns you'll be watching this month!
I had fun reviewing the good, the bad and the ugly on my channel today. Still need to see the others in the trilogy.
Nice review! I have come to find I am seriously lacking in westerns! I'll find one before the month is over!!!
Highly recommend these. I think you'd love them
Don't miss the original MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, another great western with a terrific score.
Lol man, it's okay if the good the bad and the ugly isn't your favorite.
I thought the movie was so good. I had a great time reviewing it on my channel.
Check out SHANE,Red River,The Sartana Box Set and The Great Silence.
For the love of God, CLEEF
Great review on the Trilogy Ken. You have got to check out Once Upon a Time in The West and America titles. These are all time classics. They are long movies, but totally worth it.
Clint Eastwood is awesome, I enjoy these movies, my dad loved Clint, he got me into these.
They are so good Maria!
Long live the western and the cowboy way of life!
When is the Godfather trilogy coming to 4k
I don’t think it’s announced yet. But thinking about reviewing it on my channel.
Oh one of my favorite Clint east wood movies
So good!
I just did a review on the good, the bad and the ugly for western month today!! Great minds think a like.
Loving your content, keep up your good work.
Thank you!
310 to Yuma_ Russell Crowe_ Christian Bale_ Little Big Man_ Dustin Hoffman_ Magnificent Seven _ DenzelTombstone_

Looking forward to watching both!
Another informative review. What separates Sergio Leone's westerns from John Wayne westerns is the cynicism of the former verses the simple black and white and tidy morality of the latter. John Wayne was never a fan of "High Noon," which depicted an entire western town abandoning its sheriff, when their community was threatened by a gang of outsiders. Wayne could never accept the idea of an entire American town cowering in the face of danger and not pitching in to help. "High Noon" was imbued with cynicism, just as Sergio Leone's westerns were often drenched in it. Clint Eastwood wanted to work with John Wayne, but Wayne refused. On a small note Lee Van Cleef's last name is not pronounced "Cliff." It is Cleef, as in "leaf." The reason cynicism in westerns became prominent and successful in the 60's is that there was growing discontent over the Vietnam War, including American young people growing cynical with both the Johnson and Nixon administrations. The time was ripe for taking, what had become, the over-arching myth of the American western, particularly its definition of morality and turning it on its head. "High Noon," which came out in the '50's, was, in part, a response to the McCarthy period. "The Wild Bunch" is another Western helmed by Sam Peckinpah that is drenched in cynicism. Decades later and theses films, regardless the cultural context out of which they sprang, still surprise us with their rawness, their originality, and their unflinching honesty. Also check out Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in the West," and "Once Upon a Time in America," both scored by the incomparable Ennio Morricone.
Awesome information as always Holly! Thanks for watching and I'll definitely be checking out more Leone!
You have to do some John Wayne like The Searcher, True Grit a d Chissum…
Hey Ken, I think I like fist full the best as well funny you mention Tarantino as I think Leonardo’s character in once upon a time in Hollywood is loosely based on Clint Eastwood as he was on Rawhide a tv western then went to Europe and made the now famous spaghetti westerns never heard that or read that anywhere just a theory enjoy the channel very much have a good one.
"Fistful of Dollars" was Eastwood's first starring role in the movies. Previously he was on various TV shows, including "Rawhide". I don't know if this was included on the 4k release but I saw it on Starz years ago and was completely fascinated by how they made Italian Westerns. Enjoy!

Lee Van Cl "EE" f.
Got it! Thanks!
Watch once upon a time in the west if you enjoyed these!
If you haven’t seen it, and it hasn’t crossed your radar, I highly recommend Sam Raimi’s “The Quick & the Dead.” Also, it is understandable that you might mispronounce unfamiliar names that you don’t have time to check, but how do you pronounce the name clearly spelled “Van Cleef,” “Van Cliff?!!”
I just never thought in a million years it would actually be pronounced Cleeeeef. 😂
Fun Fact: The Western genre wasn't created in the USA, it was actually born in the UK. The 1st Western ever made was 'Kidnapping by Indians' in 1899 filmed in Blackburn, Lancashire. My home town. Filmed about 5mins walk from my house.
Isn't there thousands of holes in Blackburn, Lancashire?
I seem to remember that. 4000 holes I believe...
@@jonahlevin67 4000 holes in Blackburn mentioned by John Lennon.
@@C4rL72 Sorry, I was just funning you.
Do you think Lennon based the '4000 holes' line on something he had read? Or did it simply scan right and sound good?
Very interesting to think the first 'western' was shot in England, and so long ago. I had never heard of that before.
I remember seeing Sid James in Carry On Cowboy which I thought was well done, given that geographically England is not the first place one would think of when imagining locales with a western appearance.
Do you know of any other Westerns filmed in Great Britain?
@@jonahlevin67 Yes, there was the article John had seen about 4,000 potholes in Lancashire roads.
But he’s also making a rude double-entendre remark: “Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall” basically means “arseholes”. from Quora, I never delved into the 4000 holes but always knew it was a running theme in Blackburn, tbh I thought it was a Blackburn Rovers thing as it was my late dad who told me about it, there was a Rovers Fanzine called 4000 Holes I thought it was the same thing.
Man with no name trilogy
Ken, you did realize The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is a prequel, right?
🤯🤯🤯
I didn't know that
The good the bad and the ugly is the best, a fistful of dollars is a close second.
Yeah these movies are not a real trilogy. They were just produced back to back so that’s how the studio advertises them. It being called “man with no name” was also just a marketing gimmick because he actually has a different name in all three films. Regardless, they are all fantastic. Also, if they were really connected GBU would be a prequel because he gets his poncho at the end of the movie lol.
I bought this movie earlier this year...
Awesome! What did you think?
@@midlevelmedia good movie indeed.
Those blurays are off color and bad transfers. They are coming to 4k this year.
Can't wait!
westerns? check out The Outlaw Josey Wales, Jeremiah Johnson, Dances With Wolves, and the two True Grit movies. oh...and Wyatt Earp with Kevin Costner. (Tombstone is over-acted and cartoonish to me)
1. TGTBATU
2. FAFDM
3. AFOD
Complete opposite of me, but awesome ranking!
Is western month all month 😭
Tears of joy I hope?
I hate western movies 😂 fortunately your UA-cam output is insane, so I didn’t have to wait long for the physical media report :)
For A Few Dollars More was my fave of the trilogy. TGTBATU is just too long and drawn out for me.
Unless you're prepared to count Blazing Saddles, I'd have to say this is a genre I know very little about. I definitely plan to check out the Eastwood spaghetti westerns but I think I'll start with A Fistful of Dollars, as I prefer the shorter run time.
Interestingly, Dr. Josh Matthews at Learning About Movies recently posted a video about The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. He mentioned it doesn't get into the plot until about an hour into the movie. I don't think I have enough patience to try that one first. 😀
ua-cam.com/video/_AYNJlWbtdE/v-deo.html
These are not a trilogy; they were just produced by the same group and tried to ride the hype train.
