Yeah, Perry was definitely acting quite fishy.... and Mattie is way too awesome not to come back! xD... yeah, Kirsch is such a cute puppy, he deserves a lot better... but all is not lost, fellow Creampuff ;D (talking about S3 and movie, hehe)
Camilla from the start has very little to do with the original story, but is based in Styria, and retains the idea of Camilla preying on a series of young girls by posing as their companion, with Laura being her final and only surviving victim. Aside from Laf and Perry, who are based on Laura's nanny and governess, her father, and Carmilla's mother and sister, all other characters are exclusive to the web series, and even those characters are pretty much entirely remade. But I like how the series keeps a lot of little details like Camilla having a cat form, although on the other hand she also originally had a pulse, flushed cheeks like a human, and it's not mentioned in the series if this is the case, but she returns to her coffin at night and can mysteriously enter and leave locked rooms (I think this may be referred to in the first season when a girl is attacked when left in a locked room, but it's not certain). Laura is originally a lonely girl who grows up in a modest and isolated household in the forests of Styria, who is excited by the unexpected arrival of a girl whose carriage overturns in front of their property. Her mother being in a hurry at risk of life and death entrusts her unconscious daughter to Laura's father, and rushes off immediately. Laura is shocked to recognise the beautiful girl from an episode in her childhood, but Carmilla also remarks having seen her face as it is now, and tells her that it must be fate. The important thing to remember is that Laura desperately wants a friend her age, and Carmilla is both astonishingly beautiful and charming, so Laura throws all caution to the wind, and they instantly become close friends. In the film we briefly see a portrait of Carmilla, which in a way leads me to believe that Elle is in fact a representation of Laura from the novella, because she is in fact a descendant of the mysteriously extinct Karnstein family (the ruins of the village where they lived are mentioned as being only 4 miles from the estate where Laura lives) on her mother's side, and during Carmilla's stay paintings are returned from being restored, one of which is a previously black portrait of Mircalla Karnstein. In the first series Laura makes a sarcastic comment on Carmilla's unoriginal use of titular anagrams throughout history, but this is actually the unique rule imposed on her by her vampiric constitution so to speak. I'm not sure why LeFanu thought to add this; perhaps it was just an explanation for his own unoriginal use of anagrams, but it does aid in giving Carmilla the image of being "other", knowing that as a vampire she is subject to a random condition. The novella isn't long, and as its copyright has long since expired you can find it free as an eBook, so I'd definitely recommend giving it a read yourself.
