  • purchased this bike in spring 2017, set about restoring it from the ground up, got it running in nov 2017 hope to be riding it soon. Spent an absolute fortune on this restoration with an aim of making it the best it could possibly look. Imported rare parts from USA, france, portugal, and italy at great expense. polished up all the alloy parts with an eBay polishing wheel i purchased. Had to resort to replica side panels in the end as the retired originals i had for the bike ended up making it look half finished. Had a couple of potential buyers scoff at the repair i had made on them, but in my eyes originality was the key!....ended up being low ball messers anyway and sold it to really nice guy who bought it blind, just by the pictures who 2 years later is still in touch.
    Learnt a lot doing this restoration, ie if you want to sell it take the personal touches out of it as it just costs you time and money. perfection can only be achieved if you have a good base to work from, which in general this was. Had a hell of a job getting the engine to run right but i think that was more down to the piston/exhaust/ jetting combination. but when i took it back to stock settings all became clear.
    A lot more peaky than the 490 i just finished instant power if you want it more akin with a YZ which in my opinion made it a scarier bike to ride at full chat. seems like a distant memory now. Would love to build another but the smaller cc ITs make them harder to sell on as everyone wants a big bore 465/490 if they are going to own an IT, if they are going to do motorsports most opt for the 175 which are plentiful in the UK and cheaper to maintain.

    Great work! I had a IT250 1982 back then. It was a great, fun and very reliable trail bike. I was running it with Castrol R. I had to shake the bike for two minutes before each new ride... Good old days, as they say.

    Wow, this looks great, man! Congratulations! I always loved the ITs -- wish they never discontinued them, esp. the 490. I've deeply scoured the New Zealand fan site for them. Where'd you find the side panels? They don't look like the vacuum molded junk. I bought a new '89 YZ250W in Dec. of 1988, but probably would have gone with an IT if it were still in production and didn't want the little KDX (although it, too, was a very solid bike). Cheers!

      David Muse side panels were from a IT 250 i did a few years back always like to use the original parts if i can. they were cracked soldered and held together with heat shield tape.
      big following in Aus probably pick a 490 up from there. not may about lately in UK

      when i bought it the engine was the strong point and it remained strong initially. during testing it lost compression so i was forced to do a rebuild! making it the most expensive IT resto on earth. But i love it and can’t wait to do the next one.

    • @unclequack5445
      @unclequack5445 6 років тому

      My uncle had the IT 175 model with the speedo , I loved riding it.

  • @unclequack5445
    @unclequack5445 5 років тому

    Not a bad job but you did skip some parts like new piston ang rings Id have changed.

    • @gtisid
      @gtisid  5 років тому +1

      Uncle Quack initially yes, but ended up having a new wiseco , rod and bearings put in later.
      have the same dilemma in a 490 i’m building at the moment. piston is good rings are good bearings are fine.
      but the engines in bits so i’ll change the lot.
      before i put it together this time.
      you have to budget on these things and on this 250 having a good engine enabled me to go crazy having shock , forks , wheels and swing arm polished and rebuilt.
      Rebuilding that engine later down the line cost a pretty penny, and made that the most expensive IT 250 resto on the planet.
      lessons were learnt and i’ll do the whole thing myself on the 490 as it’s impossible to recover labour costs on the resto.
      my time on the other hand is free!

    Great work man . Looks great but did you really have to mix sex related content with a classic IT restoration? WTF? My 8 year old son and I were researching rebuilds for our pair of ITs and this is what comes up. My son was listening to this video asking questions. Come on dude. Have some class.

    • @gtisid
      @gtisid  Рік тому +1

      Hi , i had to watch it again as i thought i chose the tune for a reason and can only assume you have misunderstood a lyric in the tune, it repeatedly says the word 'sick' because the bike is that. i do list all my rebuild videos as not for kids for a reason to cover myself as a lot of music i listen too is not suitable for kids and i have started dropping the tunes because of copyright issues. i have another one planned with better video content but am struggling to find the right bike.
      sorry if it offended you buy i really think you have misheard a lyric.
      thanks for watching

    • @timbercambium8002
      @timbercambium8002 Рік тому

      @@gtisid Sorry man if I did mistake the lyrics. It's certainly possible. I guess with all the crude things going down on so many social platforms I guess I assumed what I heard was correct. My bad man. Sorry about that. Great restore on the IT. It really did come out great. This was another bike model that should have never been discontinued....just like the Honda XR and the Kawa. KDX200. Keep up the great work.
