    This is an old MRE, now it has been replaced by a new, higher quality one (2 types, one as a regular MRE for use outside the base, from the improvements that there is a pure side dish without additions and the soldier himself adds what he needs from the bags (and not like in the old MRE that is in this video where the side dish already has a topping (for example, if a soldier is allergic to corn, then he will not be able to eat this rice that already has meat, carrots, green peas and corn) the second is a freeze-dried MRE, for the preparation of which you need a lot of hot water, but it is lightweight and takes up little space, mainly used on the base)
    One of the ways to use kimchi in MRE = pour boiling water and let it brew = then you get something like a vegetable soup, especially in cold weather you can enjoy hot soup, that's why kimchi in the MRE has more salt in the taste than regular kimchi

      I think that is a great idea with the kimchi. Not sure I will try it, but still a good idea.

    Kimchi lol the national food of South Korea 🇰🇷
    Nothing like spices Cabbage that is placed in pots buried in the ground to ferment. Remember seeing them digging the pots up when I was deployed there.
    If you eat enough Kimchi your sweat will smell like Kimchi.
    Nice review!

    When I was in the army, I worked at a communications center on a combined base. Our dining hall had two sections, one side for the Korean soldier and one side for the American troops, The smells on the Korean side was a trip, either very fishy or very spicy smelling. I remember eating some of the chow that tasted totally different than out in the town. I don't know if it was the military cooks or the quality of the ingredients. The food in town was much better than their cooks made. Which was slightly worse than our own food. I was in when you could only get one protein, two starches, and two veg and as much salad as your bowels could allow. We were always hungry. I heard that changed in around 2000s. Great video and I will see you in 2025!

      Thank you for your service PaineK! I am sure it was an experience being on base near another military unit! Were you ever able to try one of their rations? I can only hope you did!

      @@RationNerd In Korea there is "KATUSA" = at the American military base in Korea they recruit Korean conscripts who speak good English to serve at that American base to make up for the shortage of American soldiers (the limit used to be about 5,000 Koreans, now it's been reduced to 2,500 Koreans) - since that base had not only American soldiers but also Korean soldiers, there was a double dining hall, but since the Korean food was cooked there by Americans or Korean recruits who were inexperienced in cooking = the Korean food there was terrible, so I think @PaineK served at that base

    • @PaineK
      @PaineK 2 дні тому

      @Seele1803 Yes, that is all the way it was, we would have a contingent on our base. Makes sense about the new recruits cooking. @RationNerd I did try but the ones they had back then were a bag of a rice dish like Kimchi Rice, Japchae(?) or ramen (dehydrated), some type of soup packet and those candies. Pretty sparse. Most of them would supplement the food with something else, like a jar of kimchi. We didn't really trade with them because they would get into so much trouble for it. Thanks again and wish you a great New Year.

    I'm South Korean, but I don't really like kimchi, especially aged kimchi, by itself. I find it invaluable for adding into things, though, as you did here. It takes the edge/vinegar bomb off the kimchi, and allows me to really taste the good parts of it. I also couldn't agree more that these MREs often have unparalleled rice components. One thing to note: South Korea imports around 70-80% of its food, so that 30g of meat is actually a deceivingly expensive ask from the South Korean perspective. Thank God we're in the land of plenty to eat.

    • @RationNerd
      @RationNerd  День тому

      Wow! I did not realize that 30 grams of meat would be such a big ask. That makes more sense now! The kimchi is certainly not a stand alone side, as I discovered months ago when I did my first ever SK ration review! I appreciate your input!

    I don't know, you might be changing my mind about these Asian rations. I will have to say it looked hella good. I had to go and watch it again. It made me all kinds of hungry afterwards, wanting some Chinese food. All I have near me was Swedish fish candies. One of the only fish I like. You know you did a great review when someone that didn't have any desire to get one, wants to get one. Great job brother.❤😎

      Kimchi was never part of my diet until I started this hobby. My first two SK rations are both my first experience with kimchi at all!
      It is not the worst thing I have ever eaten, but if consumed solo....it is in my top 10 most disgusting things to date!

    I love kimchee, but even that stuff looks really off. Also, yeah, you’re supposed to eat that style of kimchee along with the other sides, not by itself haha! I know you’ve got little experience with Korean food, but that’s how to do it.
