I've heard/been in ld all of these things and I tell them "I will take my write up and go home, then return in the morning with a U-haul for my toolbox" that usually straightens them up
When we don't get paid for the computer training (the stupid HR tests). The lady in payroll said "you clock in, don't you? Then you're getting paid" - literally our payroll department telling us they don't know what flat rate is 🤦♂️
I had a car that had to get done that day, all while being given tickets all day that had to be done. I never got to that car and told the advisor to push it till tomorrow. With in the hour my manager was stomping his feet telling me the car has to be done. So I stayed 5 hours past my shift and called out the following day and the day after that was my day off. I got sick days for a reason
As a former dealer tech, I’ve probably heard all these things lol. But as a side note, your boss can fire you if you refuse to work overtime, flat rate or not. If you work in an “at will” work state . I’m a service manager now and I would never make my guys do that or threaten them.
I get told I have to stay late and work Saturday all the time. But I’m a fleet mechanic for a road construction company. We have winter here so it’s a short season. On the other hand I usually get most of December and January off then make up my own hours till April.
Flat rate should be abolished, should be hourly and salary only for mechanics. Won't step foot anywhere near the industry again until then. Warranty repair and you're not being paid to fix it again? That cost should come out of the shop's profit, not your labor. Why should you work for free? Are you a slave? Even felons in prison get paid for their labor while incarcerated.
LOL! So glad I left WT. Georgia Tech only sent us oil changes. Same with all the other state accounts. We weren’t slipping their fleet managers any cash under the table so all the profitable repairs went elsewhere.
service writer: hey man can you do this customer a favor and do this quick bulb change me: where is the ticket service writer: oh I'll get you on the next one me: your going to change another customer for work done on a car they don't own?
We don’t have to pay you for that you should have some skin in the game too. Was told that twice and began looking for a new job. Now happily no longer being told that
I Have been through all these things multiple times at different places! If you stand up for yourself and your not the top guy they will just make your life a living hell!
Production managers have never actually done a WO, or they were really bad with implementing a WO themselves personally. That's why they became a manager.
Service manager: "if I talk to someone long enough, I can make them do whatever I want."

the relationship between the mother-in-law and the bride = the relationship between the tech and shop owner

"You should be willing to work for free so you can find good paying work!"
Flat Rate Is Working For Free , Anyway !!

The one thing that I am often told is “oh yeah they gotta be outta here in 3 hours” and literally the car will sit MULTIPLE DAYS in outgoing parking

I once had a Pep Boys manager I applied at tell me: "We don't have prima donna techs here, everyone puts up inventory even flat rate employees."

My favorite once are customer has no money but take a look at this 😂
Yup, fuck right off Mr.Frontdesk. YOU can look at it.
service writer: hey man can you do this customer a favor and do this quick bulb change
me: where is the ticket
service writer: oh I'll get you on the next one
me: your going to change another customer for work done on a car they don't own?
No pay = No work! I don't stock shelves at walmart in my free time for no pay, and I certainly won't be working on cars for no pay!
@crasher88 see I wouldn't mind that once and a while if I'm being paid hourly.
Absolutely, as long as the adviser stays with me too
"Just make it work". Doesn't matter what's broken, where the parts are, what's involved, tools required. Block could be cracked in half.

How about " come on just take care of it and ill take care of you on the next job" Yeah we all know how that BS goes
