Yeah that was what I thought as well. Deep shit. This death of a King in television is up there with the death of King Alfred in The Last Kingdom. Though I cried like a little bitch at the death of Alfred, I cried at the throne room scene in this. Another edit lol I'm thinking they took a piece from TLK with the "my love" as his last words, in TLK Alfreds dying word were "My England"
I caught that too(it was echoed twice). Did anyone else catch the #prophecy that was whispered by Helaena Targaryen (bug loving girl) at the dinner table? Viserys thought he was talking to Rhaenyra, not Alicent. She asked him about the song of Ice and Fire. He was continuing their conversation and telling Rhaenyra she must take the throne to unite the realm to fulfill the prophecy.
@@cristinademartini1284 yeah it was released online, matt stepped up so the scene wasn't stopped and it ended up being one of the most meaningful scenes between them 🥺
In the end he only confused Alicent by Rhaenyra because of the milk of the poppy. If you pay attention, he refused that 2/3 times during this episode, because as he told Alicent, that made his mind cloudy and couldn't think straight. But in the end, Alicent gave to him and eventually ended up drinking it, thats why he had that prophecy conversation with Alicent, he taught he was talking to Rhaenyra.
Nope....that's not the story - in the end Rhaenyra's youngest kid Aegon will become the king and everyone else will be dead. Alicent's kid's name is also Aegon...that's the whole confusion
@@rejuvenatedsoul1016 the Aegon he referred too wasn't his grandson or his son, was the Aegon that conquered the seven kingdoms and had the vision of the prophecy.
@@rejuvenatedsoul1016 He said "Aegon's dream." Remember earlier in the season (the scene where he calls Rhaenyra his heir for the first time) he told her that the dream has been passed down the Targeryen line. So in this episode when he mentions "Aegon" and "dream" he is referring to Aegon the Conqueror, not any of the future Aegons.
Alicent had to in her heart know that anything he said could not be taken seriously. If he truly felt that way he wouldn't have made such an effort to walk to the throne and defend Rha, plus at dinner, her was still wanted Rha to take the crown. She just wanted an excuse to believe it.
At least, I'm happy that those people had given this poor old man (whom they all made his life more miserable) an image of a united and happy family, even if it was only a lie.
Episode 8 was terrific, all around. The look on Viserys' face as he surveys the room -- he nows this will be the last time these people will be in a room together, "peaceful" like this. He knows his feeble body and harried breath is the only thing keeping them from tearing each other apart. In fact, as soon as he is carried out of the room, violence erupts immediately. I feel so bad for him. What a performance by Paddy Considine. And I think we were all theorizing that Alicent might misinterpret Viserys' last words, and it seems that's exactly what happens. She cannot in good conscience thinks this is the one (1) time Viserys is lucid enough to make proclamations on who should sit the throne... but she will use it as justification to install her son on it nevertheless. The final two episodes cannot come any sooner!
He thought he was talking to Rhaenyra because they were discussing earlier about the Aegon the Conqueror and prophecy, the song of ice and fire. Alicent has no idea what that is and she might be thinking Viserys is talking about their son Aegon II as like the chosen one.
Blink, you are correct!! I had to explain it to my son-in-law watching with me.. I shouted "No no... you're talking to the wrong girl!!" Our Princess asked if he believed in the story.. he didn't answer. Then at the end, he answers her, but its the WRONG WOMAN. Allicent doesn't know what he's talking about, so all she hears is that there is a "Prince that was promised" and that she must do it. I kept yelling at the screen, "OH NO!! Not her!! That's the wrong lady!!"
Also, One of Rhaneyra and Daemon's son is Aegon who were just introduced in this episode ( Aegon & Viserys ) .... Maybe he was referring to that " Aegon " to be the one not Alicent 's son.... As Rhaneyra's Aegon is pure Targaryen while Alicent 's is half
@@siddharth7651 No when he said Aegon he was referring to Aegon the Conqueror and his dream which is called a song of ice and fire, he wasn't referring to either of the Aegon's in the current timeline. "The Prince that was Promised" is part of Aegon the Conqueror's dream and he is said to be the one to unite the realm against the threat from the North (The white walkers/army of the dead), that prince is quite clearly Jon Snow (also known as Aegon VI Targaryen)
While we are all praising the main cast, I think the actress (Maddie Evans) who played the role of maid also deserves some praise. She acted very well in that scene. I literally felt the fear in her crying.
And apparently that bit where the crown fell from Viserys' head and Daemon picked it up and placed it on his head WAS NOT SCRIPTED! Give Paddy and Matt all the awards!
The director said so in an EW interview. The crown fell by accident, Smith picked it up, and they just kept the camera rolling and Smith improvised putting the crown on Paddy's head. Since they liked it, they kept it in.

Viserys thought he was talking to Rhaenyra and was answering her from earlier in the episode when she asked if he really believed in the prophesy and that she needs to rule and continue the Targaryen line.
Paddy Consadine definitely deserves an Emmy for this , his performance made me tear up especially when he drops the crown and Daemon picks it up for him this was easily the best episode so far I can honestly say there are no bad acting performances in the whole show . The makeup and visual effects did a steller job showing Viserys ravaged face , can't wait for the last two episodes when the brown smelly stuff will hit the fan .
I just heard on a podcast that in the books, it describes Viserys was only 52 years old when he died. So, not quite so old, just terribly sick. Loved your reaction to the beheading. My daughter also freaked out and ran out of the room saying it was worse than a jump scare.
When King Viserys made his (final?) walk to the Iron Throne, refusing help from his guards, that was a really powerful moment -- ya gotta love the guy! Things are all set up to explode the second he is gone, just like at dinner! Great storytelling!
Too many great moments. One thats easily missed is Princess Rhaenys submission to her husbands wishes. Despite their opinions on Driftmarks succession, she honoured him. Shes's a good mother, wife, grandmother and family member altogether!
If you noticed during Viserys Last Supper when he took off his mask and showed half of his face was decayed, the Hightower family all sat on the decayed side of the table and Rhaenyra's family sat on his still lively side.

10:13 , He came for his Daughter despite the pain 🥺. ALL HAIL THE KING VISERYS , blood of the dragon, First of his name, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar & the first men!
Daemon used his Valyrian steel sword Dark Sister to execute Vaemond. The blade belonged in the past to Queen Visenya Targaryen, (Aegon the Conqueror's older sister-wife). It’s said that her spirit still sings within the blade's steel and guides Dark Sister to strike true. Btw, I love Daemon. He's such a complex and interesting character, no wonder he's G.R.R Martin's favorite Targaryen 😌 He's amazing in the books; an excellent warrior, the best dragon rider and so charismatic ( he's a 'bad boy' type, handsome badass, who doesn't give a f.. lol) He looks completely different in the show but Matt Smith gives outstanding performance and he nailed Daemon's personality 💯 So, now I love the show version of Daemon as well 🔥🖤 Kinda funny how at the beginning of the season some ppl thought Daemon is a villain... while a true villain wasn't born yet, at that point lol. Now we have an adult Aemond who is pretty much a psychopath and compared to him Daemon will be a hero lmao
That stare between Aemond at Daemon at the dinner after stopping the fight. Daemon's look was enough to convey the message to Aemond that theres hardly some time passed after he slashed Vaemond's head when he called Rheanyra's children as bastards. Aemond knew he stands no chance in front of Daemon which is why he just walked off.

Curiously, Aemond lost control after Luceris and his future wife started laughing at him. Why? Because Aemond was given a pig (a reference to the fact that in childhood, instead of a dragon, the bastards brought him a pig). Well, they created the beast themselves.💚

Yes. He maybe considered a weak King, but i think his love and goodness are what held the family together. This may sound dramatic, but what i wouldn't give to have a father like that!
Viserys was answering Rhaenyra's question at the end, about whether he believe Aegon's dream "The Song of Ice and Fire". He was delirious towards his end and thought it was Rhaenyra he was talking to not Alicent. And he thought he was telling her to unite the realm and guide them when she's queen. Towards his end he didn't even remember his other children, as he called Rhaenyra his only child earlier in the episode. Viserys did all that he could for his daughter, till the end he protected her and her kin, and now Alicent is going to malign and twist everything. Rhaenyra might be led to believe that her father betrayed her at the end, when it was exactly the opposite. Also, he didn't say Valhalla at end, are you serious? He said my love, as he saw that Aemma had come to take him to the great beyond.
1. Daemon always told Viserys he will always protect him. So I knew he would be the one to help him ascend the throne one final time. Daemon had his ways but he always loved his brother and niece. 2. Lord Corlys said, history doesn't remember BLOOD it remember NAMES. So Renyes did exactly that. F the bloodline, names is what matter
King Viserys, at the end, is answering Rhaenyra’s question from earlier (about the prince that was promised). Obviously on his death bed he is confused and believes he is talking to Rhaenyra… about she is the one and the prince that was promised and such, but Alicent believes he is telling her this. So the great war and eventual extinction of Dragons… all comes from this misunderstanding 😅
In the final scene Viserys thought he was talking to Rhaenyra and he was essentially answering her question if he believed in the dream of Ice and Fire. She was asking him that in an earlier scene just before she pleaded to him to back her up on her sons' ascension.
For me, the most emotional episode of HOTD so far. Viserys walking into throne room really got me. Paddy Considine deserves the emmy. After Daemon, Aemond is the character I am looking forward to watch out for.
Viserys been confused with ppl, he called alicent aemma before, then he called rhaenyra as alicent, and at last scene he thought he's talking to rhaenyra, only she knew bout the aegon conquerer dream of song of ice and fire, and looking at alicent confused face clearly he never told alicent about it. So what he meant is for rhaenyra to unite the realm.
@@firstofall21 Yeah so far it seems like quite a few people have. They aren't super geeks like some of us who analyze the shit out of the show and make the connections they put out there for us. @@CulperCast ikr like it's obvious esp he talked about fire and ice and the dream, aegon II definitely not in all those categories lol and ppl should connect the dot that he already confused at ppl and he never discuss about ice and fire to anyone beside rhaenyra, which mean he never turn his back on his daughter.
This episode pushed this show from excellent television into great television. Some of these scenes were just heart breaking and the writing is exceptional.
Honestly i love the fact that Viserys pass away with that peaceful moment with all his family reunited as his last memory, the man could not have been the best king for some people, but he was the one keeping things in peace, i cried so much in this episode, give Paddy Considine an Emmy, he deserves all recognition for his work
In episode 1, Viserys imparts to Rhaenyra after naming her heir that Aegon The Conqueror, first of his name, invaded Westeros so that he could unite the realm against the White Walkers and destroy them with their dragons. When Viserys I is dying and delirious on milk of the poppy, he tells Alicent, who he thinks is Rhaenyra, that Aegon's dream was true about The Prince That Was Promised and uniting the realm, and Alicent doesn't understand the context so she mistakenly thinks that Viserys has named Aegon his heir and the one who has to be king, and now both sides believe that the king has crowned them and they will stop at nothing to supplant the other.
Dark Sister had the narrow geometry of a stab-focussed sword yet, because it's Valyrian steel, it cuts through almost anything. Now imagine what Blackfyre, with its fat, cut-focussed blade geometry could do....
@@anhkriva5274 my guess is that Blackfyre would cut almost *anything* and do so with ridiculous ease, but stabbing would require more strength than with Dark Sister.
The King thought he was talking to his daughter, not his wife. That's why he was reinforcing the Song of Fire and Ice to her, so Rhaenyras would carry it on forward as Queen. He was talking about Aegon the Conquer, not his son.
What happened at the end is that Alicent misunderstood Viserys, and she thought he said to her that Aegon (their son) is "the prince that was promised" and that he has to rule to defend the realm from the "cold and the darkness" (the White walkers). In other words: that he was changing his decission on Rhaenyra inheriting the throne. That was not in the book, but I liked it; it gives alicent more of a flavour, let's say. In the books she just wants the throne for Aegon because power and because she is afraid of Rhaenyra. This is more interesting, the fact that she thinks Viserys really wanted Aegon to rule.
never in my wildest dreams did I ever think this series would actually be better than GOT but my god was I wrong, so far this is far far better than the 1st season of GOT imo, incredible incredible stuff !!!!!
Sorry to say this buddy the pacing, the plain vanilla acting of most of the actors(excluding Paddy man stole the whole season and Otto), weaker supporting characters....GoT s01-s04 is an achievement in television
At the end viserys thought that it was rhaenyra so she is the one who asked "ice and fire" question and he also meant to say rhaenyra that you're promised one
I cried too at the same moments with King Viserys --- His only intention and priority was to have his family get along. He never waivered from that, even in his dying days.
Viserys talked about how he will be remembered and what his legacy was. In this episode he wanted things to be set right and he wanted his family come together and be at peace and Rhaenyra to be the queen to carry on the prophecy. He passed away thinking that he has accomplished his life goals. But the sad reality is that his reign will be the last peaceful times in Westeros. I really hope Paddy wins the Emmy's. His performance and dedication to the role moved me so much.
Paddy better get an Emmy for the performance he gave in this show, I will always be moved to tears or at least the brink of tears when I watch this episode.
The king thought he was talking to rahnerya...and answering her question..that she asked earlier but he didn't realise it was alicent.. Coz the secret about aeogon's prophecy is only passed to heirs not others
You are correct, Viserys was missing an arm last episode and I think the episode before too. You are also correct about the milk of the poppy. Also when viserys dies he talks about the prophecy of the prince who was promised, the conquerers dream, to who he thought was Rhaenyra but it was actually allicent. I can’t explain anything further until you see the end of game of thrones
It is very unfortunate that Alicent now really believes that she has the king's consent to ascend the throne herself. Or at least that she believes she is part of the prophecy on which the future of the house depends. This means that she has to have Raehnyra and her sons eliminated, because officially the king gave her the support again. There is no other way. And she believes that this is exactly what the king has unofficially given his consent to. Middlefinger Strong and his assassins will probably be used again for this.
Paddy Considine! Maestro! Someone give an award to him already! I cried seeing that scene of his entry into the throne room. He stuck true to his word of naming Rhaenyra the heir --- "I will not supplant you", till his dying breath!
. 1. Aemond snapped at dinner because Luc was laughing because they brought a roasted pig.. remember the Pink Dread.. Obviously Aemond is not over this child hood teasing.. 2. Viserys thought he was talking to Rhanerya and how she was the one to unite the kingdoms.. I guess its true because Jon and Daenerys both come from RHanerys bloodline ( this is not a spoiler just Targaryen history 101, you can trace it on Wiki! )
Viserys said that about ' The Song of ice and fire ' in the end to Alicent because Rhanerys asked him about that but viserys assumed that Alicent is Rhanerys and he said that indirectly Rhanerys should be the "Queen"
Vaemond went out like a boss, speaking the damn truth in front of cowards forced into submission by the crown. He died for it but he still fought against the injustice being done with the bloodline and lineage of his great ancient house. He had more balls than anyone in his family.
It shows that you really hate Daemon, you talked about everyone except him, when he has one of the best scenes of the episode.. Remember at the end of episode 1 he said that he just wanted to be at his brother's side to help him in his moments of weakness, episode 8 is literally what he does.
Everything about this episode got me the feels for Viserys, especially in the end when he said, "my love" which could imply that he's finally going to see his late wife again. 😭
In his final moments Viserys thought he was talking to Rhaenyra. He was telling her that Aegon, the son she had with Daemon would be king. Of course Alicent has a son named Aegon, too.
Has this been confirmed. I assumed he was talking about Aegon the conqueror like, "it was aegon (the conqueror) dream to unite the realm" or maybe he had a dream about Jon snow (Aegon) who kinda did unite majority of the realm
@@dominictoretto3592 It doesn't need to be confirmed as it is already confirmed in the first episodes. He can only tell the next to inherit the throne of the song of Ice and Fire and the blade. Alicent was not his Heir so he would have never discussed this with her as it is a tightly kept secret. Alicent did a great job at portraying her confusion to what he was saying and assuming her own interpretation of his words not knowing the prophecy.
When Rhaenyra went to plead with Viserys she asked him if he believed in the prophecy because the burden he put on her was too much to bear, but we're not sure if he was listening. In his final scene with Alicent he thinks he's talking to Rhaenyra and tells her he does believe it, and Aegon's dream and the prince that was promised and that she is the one that must do it and unite the realm. Alicent not knowing what he's talking about takes his words out of context and we'll see how she will interpret this in the next episodes.
Viserys thought he was still talking to raenyra not allicent that's why he said it's her. He was trying to tell raenyra she's the chosen heir and the one who will have the prince that was promised
Unpopular opinion but am I the only one that thinks that all this conflict and the upcoming war is actually Viserys's fault? I'm not saying that both the blacks and the greens don't have their fair share of blame on this but it is he who named Rhaenyra heir to the throne knowing how this would divide the realm just because he was angry at his brother. He was the one who not much longer after his wife suffered a horrible death (because of HIM) got "seduced" by a fifteen-year old who only happened to be his daughter's best friend. He chose to remarry and have male heirs while he knew what this will cause. He even rejected Daemon's proposal to be married to Rhaenyra. And for what? Only for them to marry a decade later after she's already had 3 bastards. And I'm sorry but his neglection for his kids with Alicent pisses me off. Viserys might have been a good man with good intentions but he was a bad king. He had a short vision and every decision he took was based purely on emotion. Every decision he made was WRONG. He planted the seeds for the destruction of his own house and the bloodshed that followed his death.
Viserys was holding to life trying to keep the realm and his family whole. All that while literally disintegrating. He was the only thing keeping these from killing each other.

HOLY SHIT
Nope....that's not the story - in the end Rhaenyra's youngest kid Aegon will become the king and everyone else will be dead.
Alicent's kid's name is also Aegon...that's the whole confusion
@@rejuvenatedsoul1016 the Aegon he referred too wasn't his grandson or his son, was the Aegon that conquered the seven kingdoms and had the vision of the prophecy.
@@rejuvenatedsoul1016 He said "Aegon's dream." So in this episode when he mentions "Aegon" and "dream" he is referring to Aegon the Conqueror, not any of the future Aegons.
Alicent had to in her heart know that anything he said could not be taken seriously. If he truly felt that way he wouldn't have made such an effort to walk to the throne and defend Rha, plus at dinner, her was still wanted Rha to take the crown. She just wanted an excuse to believe it.
The kings entrance was so good. Chills and tears.
This episode made me tear up so many times! Viserys just wanted his family to love each other
At least, I'm happy that those people had given this poor old man (whom they all made his life more miserable) an image of a united and happy family, even if it was only a lie.
Prince that was promised, his will be the song of ice and fire.
John Snow - I dun wan it mah queen
That is why you should not name different people with the same name. So much confusion. Aegon? Aegon Junior?
Agree on getting an Emmy nod, Paddy has been killing it all season and this was the topper on the cake of an amazing performance.

Wait no way…who said that?
Yeah that's not what it looked like...to me it appeared this was intention of director to tell audience that Daemon actually loved his brother Viserys
The director said so in an EW interview. The crown fell by accident, Smith picked it up, and they just kept the camera rolling and Smith improvised putting the crown on Paddy's head. Since they liked it, they kept it in.
I think they improvised it the first take and then they decided to write it in. What we see on screen probably isn’t the first take

I LOVE THIS SHOW. I shed tears when Daemon helped Viscerys to the throne 😓 Viscerys said "my love" before dying referring to his wife Aeamma
I just heard on a podcast that in the books, it describes Viserys was only 52 years old when he died. So, not quite so old, just terribly sick. Loved your reaction to the beheading. My daughter also freaked out and ran out of the room saying it was worse than a jump scare.
I thought the tArgs never got Ill? Blood of the dragon and all that.

Btw, I love Daemon. He's such a complex and interesting character, no wonder he's G.R.R Martin's favorite Targaryen 😌 He's amazing in the books; an excellent warrior, the best dragon rider and so charismatic ( he's a 'bad boy' type, handsome badass, who doesn't give a f.. lol) He looks completely different in the show but Matt Smith gives outstanding performance and he nailed Daemon's personality 💯 So, now I love the show version of Daemon as well 🔥🖤
Kinda funny how at the beginning of the season some ppl thought Daemon is a villain... while a true villain wasn't born yet, at that point lol.
Greg...?
I can’t get over how good this episode was 🥺 I’m literally thinking about it all the time since the release.
All Daemon wanted is by his brother’s side and helping him, tears😢
Viserys’s last hand gesture looks like he is petting a dragon. Maybe he met Balerion and his first wife (my love) as he passed away.
Give this king an Emmy. I was really feeling for his frustration and false hope that this family will get along.
Viserys said "My Love". I did not think I would cry this hard for his death till episode 8.
This was the most emotional episode so far, great insight guys!

The King thought he was talking to his daughter, not his wife. That's why he was reinforcing the Song of Fire and Ice to her, so Rhaenyras would carry it on forward as Queen. He was talking about Aegon the Conquer, not his son.
or maybe about her son with Daemon, also called Aegon.
Aemond has become a problem. And the moment everyone starting giving toasts and acting wholesome, I forgot to breathe.

Viserys said that about ' The Song of ice and fire ' in the end to Alicent because Rhanerys asked him about that but viserys assumed that Alicent is Rhanerys and he said that indirectly Rhanerys should be the "Queen"

Everything about this episode got me the feels for Viserys, especially in the end when he said, "my love" which could imply that he's finally going to see his late wife again. 😭
He was speaking to Aemma in those last words. He kind of echoed what she said to him before her death. Paddy was brilliant.
Viserys thought he was talking to Rhaenyra about her son Aegon
In his final moments Viserys thought he was talking to Rhaenyra. He was telling her that Aegon, the son she had with Daemon would be king. Of course Alicent has a son named Aegon, too.
Has this been confirmed. I assumed he was talking about Aegon the conqueror like, "it was aegon (the conqueror) dream to unite the realm" or maybe he had a dream about Jon snow (Aegon) who kinda did unite majority of the realm

How can you say there wasn't a lot going on in this episode?I never understand that thinking, so much went on more than any battle will ever give.
Love the way Achara says "Oooo Kay sir"🤣
