  • This video was filmed on 8th September when we were out of lockdown.
    In today's vlog we travel from Milnsbridge on the Huddersfield Narrow canal to Slaithwaite.
    Just 2 miles but 12 locks.
    We start the day with some good news and half way along Michael recuses some snails.
    It was a great day! I miss days like this.

    ► FAQ
    Q• Why do you speed up some of the footage in your videos?
    A• We don't, we film it as time-lapse footage. We do not have the battery capacity or data storage to film in real time as our cruises can last up to 7 or 8 hours. We use to the time-lapse footage to help tell the story of movement rather than showcase the scenery. We limit the amount of time-lapse shots we use in each vlog.
    Q• Why are the videos so behind?
    A• This summer we decided we really wanted to just enjoy travelling on the boat. If we felt like cruising we would. It turened out we cruised a lot which meant we filmed more and had less time to edit. This meant the edits got really far behind. It was not intentional its just a consequence of us looking after our own mental health. Don't worry we are not rushing, we are just trying to enjoy the adventure.

    Almost full circle, we started watching your videos after looking for anything on You Tube about the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
    We first spotted you at Diggle in No.254, liked you style of reporting interesting places and fast forwarding the bits that would probably be a bit boring and we’ve watched every video since.
    Nos. 338 and 339 at Milnsbridge have brought back memories of my childhood growing up there.
    The Colne Valley hills and canal were our playground in the days when children were allowed to roam and enjoy freedom.
    The area around where you moored in 338 & 339 were central to where we sailed boats and fished for crayfish with a piece of grass.
    Fountains lock brought back fond memories although I didn’t know that was its name, it was a rite of passage for lads to jump across it, stupid now but we were invincible in our early teens.
    To the left of the lock was an area of waste land where the local children congregated, a dirt track called Fountain Grove led up to Manchester Road and across the road was a group of three houses which was once a pub called The Fountain, this closed in December 1934 and was converted into the three houses, I lived in the middle one until we moved to Kirkheaton (Yetton) on the opposite side of Huddersfield in 1965 aged 18.
    As an aside my dad was from Slaithwaite (Slowit) and lived in Linthwaite (Linfit), great grandad was from Golcar (Gowker) and if you told someone you were off to Milnsbridge you were “off to t’Brig.”, Local Dialect lesson over.
    The canal has certainly changed from when we drove to Milnsbridge, parked up and pushed our six month old First Born’s pram along the canal in 1976, it was a terrible sight, green weed from bank to bank so thick you felt as if you could walk on it and all the locks capped with concrete.
    Sorry for the long memory post but although we’ve never met you we’ve followed you so long you seem like family.
    Michael (Mike) Swift

    Why are locks left closed? From my limited experience, that is not the case on the Grand Canal in Ireland (but here they are always left empty, because the lower gates, being taller, cannot always take the strain).

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 роки тому

      On some canals it’s usual to leave the gates open in the direction you’re leaving, but the usual guidance with CRT is all gates closed, all puddles shut. I’m not sure what the actual motivation is, though. Probably it’s water loss, as two closed gates will do more than one to keep water from flowing downhill, but it’s just a guess. M

      In early March 1979, my cousin Tom and his wife Barbara , and I (along with a crew of 4 for the 2nd boat) got the job of moving 2 brand new hire boats from their build base in Market Harborough (Leicestershire line of Grand Union) to their hire base at Wrenbury on the Llangollen, Shropshire. We reckoned it up afterwards- 139 canal miles and 161 locks in 8 days. We were young and daft but we did enjoy the challenge - very hard work and certainly not a holiday. I don't recommend anyone trying this at home! We thought we were quite fit but our first challenge was Foxton's 2x 5-rise. There followed variously Hatton flight (21 broad-gauge), across Birmingham, (Farmer's Bridge (13)) Wolverhampton 21.... Audlem (15) and the climb up the Llangollen from Hurleston jcn. One thing we wonder about is how long will it take us to catch up on the pronunciation of certain words and phrases. I'm positive that we will be corrected time and time again. Even spelling of words is different, such as favorite which you spell favourite. I might be wrong with that too! Haha! Still, can't wait to get there! We are from the US by the way.

    Why so few boats a week allowed through the tunnel, is it because they need CRT guys to escort you through?

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, under the Covid rules in place at the time (the current lockdown may have changed things further) the boat must be piloted through by staff, plus there needs to be a safety driver who moves along with it in the railway tunnel. So the extra staffing issues complicate scheduling! M

    Just an off the wall comment / question. Just how much food can you carry on board? Do you do one big shop for a certain number of days or do you shop as required?

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 роки тому

      We’ve got a small fridge, round the size of an oven, so not a lot of storage for anything that requires cooling. Plenty of shelves and pantry space for anything that doesn’t. The real limitation on shopping is simply how much can we (or I, during lockdown) carry on our backs for the distance required to reach the shops. If we’re close I can get in about a week’s food in a trip, if not I can carry enough for 2-3 days. M

    Is the engine okay. I see the occasional smoke. Curious if it could possibly be an injector issue?

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 роки тому

      It’s doing okay, but did start smoking more recently. The videos are well behind us, but a month or so after this we took her in and got the injectors and manifold off and sent for inspection... they didn’t do much but wipe off the grease and check the calibration, but she’s been smoking a lot less since, so hopefully that was the issue and not something more serious. @@MinimalList well there is a product in the states called “engine restore”. It is added to the oil. If it is ring related it will help. The concern with injectors is a crack tip could cause that one cylinder to be very hot and damage the engine.

    Andrew's Wood Pigeon (a poem found in the canal)
    How sturdy must a twig be for a wood pigeon to roost,
    and would a piece of scaffolding provide a safety boost?
    This wood pigeon is fortified and fit on nature's fare
    to danger he's oblivious and sits digesting there.
    The twig is overburdened and he plummets to the ground
    He's rendered dazed and helpless so he's hoping to be found.
    I pick him up and take him home to tend him hard I try
    But far too soon he leaves me for the roost up in the sky.

    Realt sorry for a less than totally positive comment. I continue following you due to content- it is very good and George is fantastic....I do believe something is afoot with your sound setup for human comment. Both enroute and the voice-overs. Your channel alone amongs other boattubers etc. has your voices wearing woolen mittens. I can hear and understand you quite well, but your sound setup seems to disguise anything distinctive of your voices, and I believe this is letting you two down...sorry I can’t describe it any better, seems as if your hard- or software is clipping all highs and lows of your speaking modulation.......like your voices are wearing woolen mittens...

    • @MinimalList

      Hmm, really not sure what that could be, except where we’ve gotten the levels wrong on the voice recorder and I hit the clipping limit. Jo does add some normalization, but it’s all based on what UA-cam recommends, so shouldn’t be doing anything egregious. I’m afraid my hearing’s never been up to the task of judging, but I’ll take a look and see if there’s anything obvious. M
