This aired on CBS' Tuesday night schedule at 10pm(et) from 1955 through '58 (and was off the air in November 1958, after it was revealed that several contestants had gotten their answers in "advance", on sponsor Charles Revson's orders). This telecast, the series' "first anniversary show", originally aired live on June 5, 1956.
Three years after it exploded into a nation's consciousness, Question and Challenge were dead. Having faded in popularity as it was, in the wake of the hugely popular Twenty One championship of Charles Van Doren, Question and Challenge were yanked off the air within three months of the quiz show scandal's eruption. Challenge went first on September 14, 1958 with Question-once the emperor of Tuesday-night television-taking its Sunday-night timeslot after a three-month hiatus until it was killed on November 9.
Kinescopes (and maybe videotapes towards the end in 1958) were likely made for broadcast to the West Coast three hours after the live broadcast to the East Coast, as well as kinescopes flown to Alaska and Hawaii for broadcast a week or so later.
As a result of the quiz show scandals, laws and regulations were enacted to prevent such rigging. Today, rigging of a quiz/game show is a felony. Believe it or not, it WAS legal to rig a game show prior to late 1959!
bullcrap----IMO, she was just the only one not to admit and not to get caught. Whenever she was pressed during the trial, she would resort to crying and borderline hysterics. Who knows for sure, but if you look at her performance on the show, she had all of the telltale signs of someone who'd rehearsed her performances (the hesitations, the looking unsure of an answer then suddenly answering it with relative ease out of the blue, the shifting between looking nervous and austere to looking flightly and jovial. Yeah, it doesn't jive with me. And she made a good career out of her fame, too!!
No, nobody got answers in advance. At least not on Question. The producers found out how much you knew and tailored their questions around your knowledge base if they liked you. If not, they threw you something completely out of left field and hoped you came up wrong. Didn’t happen in Joyce Brothers’ case.
What was Peter Freuchen some fucking angel sent here on earth beyond corporate influence and moral reproach? Are explorers saints? You think he received questions on the Seven Seas by fucking accident?!?! What Peter Freuchen has to do with the price of spinach in the produce section on Sunday is beyond me!
the $64,000 question sucks I like mad libs disneys answer to the 90's nick game shows hosted by david sidoni from roundhouse better because of the nwo wolfpack with scott hall and dusty rhodes
After "The Quiz Show" was produced and aired so many times over the years, I believe most of us view these earlier shows as being almost entirely dishonest. Today, you would never hear such concise answers as you do on these shows. And it was all because, as the producers in the movie TQS stated, "It's all about the money." The audience had their hopes for the win, but failed to suspect staged shows.
Oh sure - especially the rehearsing and rigging part of those shows (and deceiving the American public) - VERY classy. I mean, in all sincerity, the "civility" you see here is rather vacuous & superficial don't you think? Never-mind that there are only pale faces in the audience or on the stage.
Its amazing that this old tv shows are avilable to watch in 2012
Real true classic it’s a shame they don’t show some of the old classic game shows got some on dvd from a private collector

RIP Joyce Brothers. :(
Fans of I Love Lucy will recognize host Hal March as the adorable bachelor Eddie from the episode 'Lucy is Matchmaker.''
How on Earth did she know all those answers? That's nuts.
Am I missing something? The Marine at the opening of the show was referred to as "Colonel"...but I THINK I see Captain's bars on the shoulders...??
Yeah, you missed something...he was properly called Captain...what are you, a failed 2nd Looey...????? SEMPER FI.
... Peter Freuchen was on the level. A great man.
How do you know that? You know that trivia is rather trivial to some.
I wonder how many episodes of this series survive today given how live television was mostly not recorded, erased, or destroyed outright.

So the lipstick case was called a futurama? What was the compact called? Family Guy?
Adjusted for infaltion, $64,000 is equivalent to over half a million today.
I'd like to know if the Air Force ever disciplined the pilot for participating in this scam?Or if he were called before the grand jury?
So much class. Its too bad people are so different now

Believe it or not, it WAS legal to rig a game show prior to late 1959!
But not sporting events!
standy by lol
The REAL $64,000 Question is: Did any of the contestants get the answers in advance??
The ones the producers liked, yes. The producers didn't like Dr. Joyce Brothers, but she won honestly.

Meredith was the best host
for those of you who think this show was rigged, you all dont have a clue as to who Peter Freuchen was (the man at the end)

Is it just me or was Bobbie pregnant when she did this?
Everything about that show was fake. Everything.

Geezh, give it a rest.

Hey, jpwjr - ever hear about Gloria Lockerman?
@@dillysgirl4ever I have. I'm assuming you're alluding to my "only pale faces" comment.
@@jpwjr1199, yeah. And Gloria appears on stage at the very end with all the other first year 64K winners.
