I love how it's the same song, yet it is so incredibly different. Of course, it is the original, but the ability to hear so many takes on the exact same piece of music is such an awesome privilege of being able to hear.
Ron Miller originally wrote this song for Barbara McNair; Barbara was the first in the world to ever sing this song. The song was written with a slow tempo and was performed as a ballad. The composition was originally recorded by Jean DuShon.

So, Barbara McNair was the first in the world to ever sing this song, but the composition (the song) was originally recorded by Jean DuShon ? Makes sense 😉
Barbara sang it after Berry Gordy found out that that Ron Miller who was a Motown staff writer at the time had recorded it with Jean DuShon on Chess Records in early 1966, Gordy immediately demanded that a version would be given to Motown artist Barbara McNair. The song was available and included on her album Here I Am which was released in November 1966.
Ron Miller originally wrote this song for Barbara McNair who was the first to ever sing it. Jean DuShon had originally been tapped by Ron Miller to demo "For Once in My Life", as he was fine-tuning the composition. Miller was impressed by DuShon's rendition of the song, and she released her version on the Cadet label in 1966. Berry Gordy found out that Miller, a Motown staff writer, had given the song to an outside artist, and had Miller make the song available for Motown artist Barbara McNair.
But, the first person to actually record the song was Connie Haines, a Motown artist. It wasn’t released. Jean DuShon was the first release on this song.
Jean was a great singer and was my neigbor and agreat friend to my mother and myself U loved this Lady and her great spirit RIHP with my.mother,Freddie and my sister Karen, always Rocky
How come in all the recorded versions no one sings the wonderful VERSE. The lyrics go: Goodbye, old friend, This is the end/ Of the (man, girl) I used to be, 'Cause there's been a strange And welcome change in me. Chorus: For Once In My Life . . .
This is so beautiful and wonderfully sung.. Jean DuShon is a outstanding singer. There are various versions and this illustrates the richness of the song that comes through as Ballard. I do happen to like Barbara McNair as well.
Actually we now recently found out it was Connie Haines who did the original version a few months prior to Barbara McNair's version. Both were recently signed to Motown at the time and Connie's original was done in July 1965. Barbara's was completed in October 1965.
Enter big band vocalist Connie Haines, who claims to have recorded an early version of “For Once in My Life” during her brief and somewhat unlikely tenure as a Motown artist-although that master remains unreleased. The late Barbara McNair, signed to Motown, included the song on her Here I Am album, released in November 1966. The Temptations also waxed it around this time. But the first version to actually hit the airwaves was probably by Jean DuShon, a glamorous performer who recorded it for Chess Records in July 1966 (at least a month after McNair, although McNair’s was released later).

This version (the original) reall touches the soul. her vocals are bone chilling / spine tingling. Being added to my favorites! Much Respect!!!!
The Four Tops also did this in 1966. I put that, this and Stevie's in my Motown playlist. Thanks for the upload!
Try the version by Paul Williams (Temptations) if you haven’t already

I thought Stevie Wonder's version was the original until now. Just doing through and listening to the earlier recordings..
