I am so glad you included Kushiel's Dart in this. I started the series years ago and actually stopped reading it because I got picked on so much for reading 'a smut trying to fantasy' novel. I am absolutely going to re-read this series and finish it now. I loved what I read of this series, and how strangely deep it was.

as someone who was around when the AOT manga ended, the only thing i can say is that dont listen to anyone else, come to your own conclusion and stand by it. There is so much going on with the ending that it felt like everyone and their mother loved it or hated it for a different reason and sometimes the reason why someone loved it and someone hated it was one in the same.

I would love a video with a dive into Toliken's universe. Everyone always talk about lord of the rings, but Silmarillion, Children of Húrin and Unfinished tales usually goes relatively unappreciated. Also, with the new second age book coming this November, and the dreaded rings of power show coming this September, seems relevant to take a look at Tolkien's stories as a whole.

Here are my current top reads this year. Not all of them were published this year but I finished them this year and really enjoyed them:
    1. The Actual Star - Monica Byrne: One of the most unique books I have ever read. A mixture of historical fiction, contemporary and science fiction coupled with the best post apocalyptic society I have ever experienced.
    2. Empress of Forever - Max Gladstone: A really great space opera with great characters, good banter but still really thought provoking and weird.
    3. Bluebird - Ciel Pierlot: Something akin to Firefly with a budding friendship at the center. This is more focused on the characters and the action but the worldbuilding is good enough for me to feel immersed in this world.
    4. Legends & Lattes - Travis Baldree: What Daniel said in the video. Just fun and cosy.
    5. Critical Role: Kith & Kin - Marieke Nijkamp: The best backstory book I have ever read. Critical Role is the DnD show and this tells the backstory of two characters from their first campaign. What works so well is that the plot and the new characters don't needlessly connect to the main show. The interactions between the twins is what is explored here.
And I need to mention one thing that may not be a full book but is part of my favorite book series of all time:
Nona the Ninth (Sneak Peek) - Tamsyn Muir: I love the Locked Tomb series. Harrow the Ninth may be my favorite book of all time. And even if each book seems disconnected from the others at first glance, each book builds on what came before. All the characters (even side characters) get their due and the main characters, the worldbuilding and the weird blend of science fiction, fantasy and memes create a book series that seems to be made for me specifically.

Your comments about the Golden Ass struck home. I'm currently reading the Mabinogion, another early collection of Welsh "fantasy" stories. I can't help it, but I'm stuck in (modern) fantasy mode, and the magic "systems" are all over the place, and superpowers suddenly appear when needed. Mostly, though, it's interesting to see how earlier storytellers worked, and I guess the same will apply to the Golden Ass.

The other books in the Bas-An-Lag series are really good, The Scar goes so hard (if floating steam-/biopunk pirate republic doesn't sound appealing to you, you're not a fantasy fan!), and if you liked Mieville going all-in on politics, boy are you going to love Iron Council.

Accession of a Bookworm Season 2 was great, hands down, but people defiantly would probably recommend for you to read the light novels because 1) It's farther along than the anime and manga and 2) You get more information from the Light Novels that they kind of skip over in the Anime, and the Manga is actually even more behind than even the Anime. Which I totally get.
The only reason why I can't really say "reads" because I have "The Rowan" by Anne McCaffery, "Deerskin" by Robert McKinley, and "Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky (reread) to start and finish and they're in different states of finish and starting.
However Now I'm curious for two things:
    1) For you to Watch Outlaw Star but also watch it's prequal series Angel Links (follows a different character all together from the Outlaw Series). And kinda do a deep dive on that because the world of that is actually really interesting and makes you question how you perceive the original Outlaw Star Universe. Also comparing it to Cowboy Bebop as they are always seen as the peak of their time of anime series (Not Angel Links, but Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop).
    2) Watch the OVA and anime Series of Vampire Princess Miyu vs the Manga of Vampire Princess Miyu. Kinda do a three way deep dive thoughts of the differences between the three versions. While the Series KINDA continues on from the OVA, it feels different as you watch it. the Manga is like more like Short stories but also have a similar vibe to the OVA in a way of story telling.

I've been watching you since 2019 and at no point did you come off as snobbery or prejudiced against manga/anime, I think it was more so a feeling of unfamiliarity that led to a kind of distanced feeling towards the medium. I do wanna say tho, that I am beyond happy that you're dipping your toes into this medium which has captivated millions across the world. As you said, it's not dependent on the medium but how it's told and I can't wait for you to discover more in the future

I don't think that he came off as snobbish to manga /anime. But, somewhat do to how he presents himself things can come strong, either for dramatic effect when he doesn't tend to connect with the approach. Like for his Arcane review his response to the music was rather dramatic and came off as rather snobbish for not being the way he would normally think it should be.

I started reading Dresden this year, and I really love the setup. My best friend rants and raves about it, so I decided to finally sit down and put nose to page (digitally speaking, EPUBs take up much less space in my room) and it's all I hoped for.
If you're getting more into Eastern story telling with anime and manga, might I suggest The Rising of the Shield Hero light novels, the Tower of God webtoon, and Mushoko Tensei in any form it exists in.

Daniel, I gotta say: Regarding cyberpunk and Snow Crash. I think A case could be made the SC is actually post-cyberpunk. For actual cyberpunk, check out things and like William Gibson's Burning Chrome or Neuromancer, Bruce Sterling's Artificial Kid or Schismatrix, Walter John Williams Hardwired or Voice of the Whirlwind, Rudy Rucker's Software or Wetware, George A Effinger's When Gravity Fails, KW Jeter's Dr Adder or Glass Hammer, or Farewell Horizontal. Read some of those and compare and the difference will be stark. Cyberpunk was a attitude or movement that that started in the 80's, and very quickly was co-opted by the very things the authors railed against (which is so VERY cyberpunk). I guess what I'm trying to say is: By the time Snow Crash came around cyberpunk was already just a label to sell stuff. Snow Crash is a nostalgic spoof of the genre.

I LOVED the Dresden Files TV show! I watched it long before I ever read any of the books though. I was actually a little disappointed in the books when I started reading them over a decade later. This just proved that when adapting books to a new medium, you don't necessarily have to copy the material verbatim for it to be good!

As someone who really enjoyed the Manga ending for Attack on Titan I feel like most people are unsatisfied because it might not make "physical" sense? For me personally I was more trying to look at it as a piece of art and try to understand what it had to say than to necessarily make sense of the magic system and whatnot. Not sure though, I might be wrong, I'm not too deep in the fandom and I hope I don't get death threats over this lol. Can't wait to see your reaction/opinion to the ending.

Off-topic but really deserves a mention. Please can you call out the release of Impact Winter by Travis Beacham, maybe even review it? This new audiobook is free for a limited time on Spotify and well worth a listen with some big names from various fantasy tv shows voicing the cast. The first scene is a bit bleh but it's 100% uphill from there all the way to the end.

My dude! “The Golden Ass” may be the first fantasy, but “A True Story” is the first sci-fi it is also by Lucian and honestly even crazier than “The Golden Ass”. I had to read both this past winter for my Ancient Satire class.
Also if you read “The Golden Ass” through the lens of satire it is so much better. Especially bc at the time no one at the time in Greece acknowledged that the Roman Empire existed. Much less made Roman legionaries bad guys. Also keep in mind unless you read it in Ancient Greek (possibly Latin I can’t remember) is a translation.
