Dan I really appreciate how you’re down with anything. Seeing a Taylor swift concert, diving into the story behind sound of freedom, understanding that Barbie was not completely for you- it just shows your in integrity. Thank you for the videos!
It's so crazy to me that Elemental is gonna make around $490m worldwide yet will lose around $80m in its box office run. It just shows how insane a 200m dollar budget is. I'm glad the movie made just about a half billion after such a bad opening though.
They spend waaayyy too much on movies nowadays. Needing 500 mill to break even on a non mcu property is just a terrible game plan. Not too long ago 100 mill was considered a huge budget.
@@spartan5285 I don't even understand why they spend so much. I feel like since Avengers came out and had a big spectacle 30+ minute fight sequence (which I loved) almost every blockbuster has done the same and more often than not it's the least interesting part of the movie. They're spending sooooo much money on CGI and set pieces that aren't interesting. I get it with something like Avengers because they're big climaxes to movies long arcs, but the best action scenes in something like Shang Chi are the bus fight and the scaffolding fight. The dragon at the end and the big groups fighting just added time and expense on a final fight that could've been a great kung fu fight between the hero and villain. Fast and Furious could easily get away with some well crafted car chases that don't have an entire city being trashed and be more interesting. It seems like excess for the sake of it and it's ballooning the budgets and runtimes of these films. I don't know where they get the idea that everything needs to have an overlong overly bombastic finale.
@@spartan5285especially when you look at the two other great looking animated movies this year (Spiderverse & Super Mario) both of which were made on $100 million.

Fun Fact: IMAX actually contacted Paramount and tried to convince them to delay Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One so the film would have more time to be screened in IMAX and premium theater auditoriums. However, Paramount refused to delay the film

The studios supposedly overplayed their hand and lowballed Taylor's team, thinking that they couldn't manage the production, financing, and distribution without them. So Swift's team, who, regardless of whether you like her music or not, have demonstrated themselves to be very capable, called the studios' bluff, self-produced the movie, and directly negotiated distribution with AMC for a 57% take (AMC gets the remaining 43%). Great analysis. Haven't seen "Haunted Mansion" yet, but it befuddles me that Disney released this in the summer...like why?!?!? This is a film that screams fall/Halloween season. Even if it wasn't a "hit" with a fall release, it probably could have better legs in the spooky season.
Honestly I think it's a combination of wanting to release it on Disney+ in October and a fear of competition of actual horror movies like Saw X and Five Nights At Freddy's... but mostly the wanting to release it on Disney+ in October
Dan, you put so much effort into all you do. Thanks so much for all of your uploads, especially longer and tougher videos like today's. We appreciate you, sir.
My biggest summer shocker this year is Flash not making the summer top 10 domestic list. Insane. Also a massive shocker - Dead Reckoning dropping over $200M from Fallout, oppenheimer WW passing GOTG 3, Meg 2 passing Indy 5 and Flash There is no way I would have seen this coming back in April
I would not have ever pegged Oppenheimer overtaking Fast X, frankly. Fast X is such an all-audiences friendly film in rating and content that I did not see it being overtaken by Oppenheimer, of all things. And I'm happy to see Guardians 3 had a strong finish, somewhat surprised for what happened with Indy 5 and impressed that Barbie seems to have really scratched an itch I didn't expect, with the Barbenheimer train and all that coming unexpectedly, and alas, seeing that Dead Reckoning Part 1 counts as one of the disappointments. But it at least seems it's lack of big success will mean this franchise for Cruise will certainly close once Part 2 comes out.
If it wasn't for the Ezra Miller controversy, it would have been more successful. I'm expecting James Gunn's DCU to change DC's fortunes considerably once Superman Legacy comes out.
Mission Impossible was smacked in the face by Barbenhieimer, but it was chopped in the legs by Sound of Freedom, who soaked up much of the remaining audience, consisting of people who boosted Top Gun Maverick in 2022.
I think this is my favorite charts episode. I’ll probably watch it again because there’s so much great information. Agree, WB should be super grateful to Greta for saving them. Love the flashback segment. I was in my teens in 1989. That was a great summer of movies. Thank you Dan!
Could we get a short video on Oppenheimer in China? I'm shocked it's playing there at all, and I want to know what censorship it's been subjected to. It's kind of crazy that Christopher "moviegoing is sacred" Nolan would let changes be made to his films to suit an authoritarian regime.
A deeper dive into Oppenheimer performance in China would be interesting. In addition, I m puzzled why the box office numbers for china are a bit outdated for Oppenheimer with the gross sales numbers dated 4-5 days ago. As the movie is ramping up in china, getting more recent data points would move the needle for the movie’s box office figures. Would be interesting to get those figures
One thing that will work for M:I and Fast X is the fact that they are franchise movies and this will bring interest to the earlier movies as well. I remember back in the day that whenever a new Bond came out, all of the earlier ones would suddenly be shown on TV (here in Finland, where - admittedly - Bond is a very big deal), so the studio probably made plenty of money just based on those TV rights. I'm a bit iffy on the physical media on M:I and Fast X, because if I was interested in those, I would wait for the box set of the whole series instead of buying it now.
"The studios were reportedly frustrated about being left out of the loop, but the studios have been leaving a lot of people out of the loop recently, so I'm not really concerned about their feelings." Go Dan!! 🔥
As a Swifty I was so giddy when she announced the Eras Tour movie. One because I could finally experience it since I didn't get tickets to the concert. And B, because I knew she would at one point or another make it into your show, and that's just wonderful!
I don’t know why Par didn’t re-release Mission Impossible in IMAX this month. Instead, Barbie is going to take one of those weeks that MI could’ve had. I would’ve definitely seen it again in imax or Dolby. I think there’s potential for a release right before part 2 comes out and I will be in line if so!
I was worried about the Rotten Tomatoes Decoded segment because that was one of my favorites (due to just how informative it is and how much more in depth it goes into about something not only not very well understood but also something that too many people go out of their way to obfuscate than just the usual "why are the critics so out of touch?"); glad to see it just found a new home instead (which, thinking on it, probably does suit it better, especially if you want to expand its scope). Anyway, fantastic content, as always; your depth, context, general lack of clickbait, and all around lack of apparent agenda (in any direction/on any side) other than to see the movie experience not only survive but thrive continues to impress me. It also makes me continue to wish more people were like you, especially online. I digress, though, so much respect to you (and I second the comment that said this episode was kind of like the Super Bowl)!
So crazy to see the Rio Theatre as the indie cinema spotlight. I go there a lot! I recently saw TAXI DRIVER there for the first time for National Cinema Day. It's a shame that Indiana Jones didn't perform better, but it's clear that there were a lot of challenges facing it. Audiences may have a sour taste after the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It was a crowded summer market. Skeptisism because Harrison was 79 at the time of filming and Spielberg did not direct this one. Franchise struggled to resonate with younger audiences in recent years.
"If there was ever a case for a show needing to be shortened, it was this one." Me: Okay, Dan, it might be a little long, but its not THAT long. Looks down: Wow. I've been listening to Dan talk box office numbers for over an hour. Fair enough, I guess that it a bit long.
Some absolutely fascinating details in your winners and losers of the summer. Teenage kraken lost more money than it cost to make, had they binned it entirely, would have cost them less. The Dementer, which hung around the charts for a while, lost money. The ridiculously huge budgets of most films, and tiny budgets of others Sony not having a streaming service being a consistent plus
"I'm just going for the experience" Is my EXACT reason I want to go myself to the Eras tour concert movie. I'm just hoping there's still some ticket available that coming week because I don't want to pay the full price PLUS the online purchase tax AMC has.
Hi Dan, Apologies if this has been discussed before, but it might be interesting to see a chart sometime of actual tickets sold vs grosses and how big an audience a film really has. Like would Barbie, which isn't playing in as many premium format screens actually have sold more tickets than Avatar 2 domestically, or would Disney films, which often skew towards discounted child tickets, actually serve a much bigger audience than the grosses alone show? I don't know if you can even get this data, but might interesting. Anyway, keep up the good work!

I loved the duration of this show. Great for a leisurely morning, relaxing and accompanying a part of my day, like visual radio in a way! It's no bad thing. Great work, thank you
I would happily go to the Eras Tour movie if the crowd were silent and I could actually listen to the music… But I can’t think of a theatrical experience more irritating than being in a room full teenagers screaming along to every song.
Honestly, this is why I backed out of buying a ticket. I like Taylor Swift ok, much like Dan I mostly know her hits, and I'm of course curious about the concert itself. And honestly I wouldn't even mind people singing along, it's a concert. But do I trust Swifties to stay in their seats, not jump around, and generally not treat this like an actual concert? Eh... Yeah, no.
Mission Impossible if they released maybe a week before or on Labor Day it might have made more money and also they would have space for IMAX theaters but I think Tom Cruise is just a competitive type of person that he wants to compete with Oppenheimer but didn't expect that it was pushed unintentionally by Barbie.
With the Five Nights at Freddy's movie coming out, Dan should either do a character a week highlight like he did with the Cats musical or at least have a segment with his pal MatPat feverishly trying to explain what the heck the storyline of this movie/video game series actually is.
What you're failing to take into account is that ever since The Dark Knight, it has been Hollywood custom to fill a warehouse with stacks of $100 bills and set it ablaze. That may seem dumb to you, but that's why you're not running a major studio. 🤷♀
Charts with Dan is never late, nor is it early. It arrives precisely when it means to.

@@mops515 only 2 of those turned profit
@@laurenmastersMight wanna phrase it that way in your comment then, lol. I thought the same thing as them and was confused that you'd missed so many
Blue Beetle isn't out in all countries yet, opens next week in my country and a couple others I know of same with mutant mayhem so hopefully the international audiences can give them a good boost.
I still think Haunted Mansion was possibly a victim of a contract Disney had, where they *had* to release a movie, and it was put up for sacrifice
Oh yeah, my man, Dan. You the man.
Tay Tay saving October box office is the news I wasn't expecting but hey its 2023 I don't think anyone expected this year's box office to go the way it went
Aw man I know the Rio! I saw Toy Story 3 there in 3D. It's the film which taught me not to bother with 3D
Toy Story 3 is also the movie that turned me off of 3D! What a horrible conversion that was. I only see it for movies meant to be shown in 3D now.
I loved the duration of this show. Great for a leisurely morning, relaxing and accompanying a part of my day, like visual radio in a way! It's no bad thing. Great work, thank you
great! thank you!
Blue Beetle posting solid holds....I loved the movie so I'm happy to see it having decent legs.
How many legs do Blue Beetles have?
I can't wait for Dan's review of the Eras Tour concert movie 😆
That TS movie is going to be #1 earner this year
With the Five Nights at Freddy's movie coming out, Dan should either do a character a week highlight like he did with the Cats musical or at least have a segment with his pal MatPat feverishly trying to explain what the heck the storyline of this movie/video game series actually is.
Yet again, a movie with The Rock in it disrupts your summer prediction accuracy!
This was an especially interesting episode! There is a reason why I never miss an episode. 🙂
Thank you 🙂
Thank you, Dan. That was amazingly satisfying!
That was one brutal summer,…
Summer’s not over until Dan says it is
perfect timing. im packing for a trip, and this is the perfect background for packing
I'm a Swiftie. I went to Eras (it was amazing). And I will be there first showing opening night in IMAX. Very pleased you are covering this event Dan.
What you're failing to take into account is that ever since The Dark Knight, it has been Hollywood custom to fill a warehouse with stacks of $100 bills and set it ablaze. That may seem dumb to you, but that's why you're not running a major studio. 🤷♀
Could you maybe do a breakdown of the Summer of A24?
Shout out to the Rio theatre!
