The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Very underrated Soul singer. Sadly Berry Gordy's obsession with Diana Ross meant other great female Soul singers/bands at Motown were not given the attention and push they deserved. It makes my blood boil when Motown holds big ceremonies and events only to exclude or fail to mention the other astounding singers who graced the microphone at Hitsville USA. Singers like Mary Wells, Barbara Mcnair, Gladys Horton, Martha Reeves, Brenda Holloway, Florence Ballard were just not given the attention they deserved back in the 60s, and are rarely mentioned today, such is the corruption of the music industry.
A perfect analysis. Totally agree!
let's add the ever talented "KIM WESTON" to that "Pushed Aside For Diane" group
@@mrob75 yes was meant to add in kim..amazing singer/artist , and another artist pushed aside for nasty diana ross.
...A lot of people didn't know this, but Thelma originally sang "Do You Know Where You're Going To", and it was slated to be the 1st single from her 1975 LP, "I've Got The Music In Me"...UNTIL, Suzanne De Passe gave the Song to Diana Ross, for the "Mahogany" flick, and Diana sang OVER Thelma's vocals! (CONT.)
...You can even hear Thelma's style of vocalizing, on the line, '....you knew I loved you, but my spirit was free...' ..to make it up to Thelma, she got to sing the Theme to the Redd Foxx flick, "Norman Is That You?", which tackled the topic of H-mosexuality...and, NO ONE saw it! Thelma REALLY was done wrong, and ,it pains me that She's known as a 'One hit Wonder'...she's had a career for FIFTY-THREE YEARS!!!
@@RBS_ what an amazing story…Thank you for this information! 😉
I have met this woman at least three or four times and she is a beautiful person .When you meet her she's so humble and that gift of a glorious voice is still with Thelma Houston and her beauty is still intact. Why can't we find a way to give Thelma her flowers in some major way while she's still here amongst us. She is one of the most underrated female vocalist in history and one of the most beautiful spirits I have ever encountered in my whole existence sing it Thelma! 💜💜💜💜💔💔💔🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷
To whoever posted this video thank you so much this is such a blessing to my soul right now we're losing so many Legends. Thelma Houston deserves all the praise, God bless you Thelma, may you live long and thank you whoever posted this video this is beautiful
....Oh my GOD! ...I LITERALLY came here, to say EXACTLY what you said! ...THANK YOU for realizing what Thelma's legacy should be noticed for....you keep one of those Flowers for YOURSELF, ok!?? ((🌷))..ha-HAAA!!
@@RBS_ Great fan's think alike!💐💐 Here you go 😜💐
That's what you call a voice Ladies and Gentlemen! "Didn't We" have the Best of the Best! Never will those days be relived... but boy are those memories just So Sweet. Thank you for sharing! 💖
Wow, the fabulous pre-"Don't Leave Me This Way" Thelma! I'd never seen this, nor known she sang it or was on Ed's show. What a fabulous outfit and (as always!) voice. Beautiful performance.
Is this the same Thelma "Don't Leave Me This Way" Houston?
Yup. This was from an album she cut for ABC-Dunhill "Sunflower" in 1969, produced by Jimmy Webb.
@@kevingoins9858 Wow!
Another Jimmy Webb song, Richard Harris did it first as the B-side of MacArhur park. Everybody else did it better though. 🙂
Check out Eddie Kendricks version
What a voice!! Too bad her hits were only a few. Yet she had a #1 song. Many of the greats have never had achieved that status! Thelma Houston you did well!!
yeah but what a song it was,
@@1talldaddy #1 on The Billboard Hot 100!
What a beautiful voice
And that number one song won her a Grammy award.
Check out her catalog of music, I promise you you'll discover more great masterpieces.
This appearance is from 1969 which was the year of the release of her first album, Sunshower, on Dunhill Records. The album was critically acclaimed which may be what got her on the Ed Sullivan show as 1969 was the beginning of her solo career. I’m not going to speculate why I think a woman with the talent that Thelma Houston has is so underrated as I would only be guessing. I will say that I constantly see people state that this singer or that singer is underrated. Once in a while, I will agree. In this case, I couldn’t agree more. Miss Houston still kicks ass with that amazing voice and enthusiasm and as someone else here has already eluded to, she seems to be a wonderful person. BTW, her Motown show is brilliant. There is no way someone could not see it and leave very satisfied.
The voice! The dress! Very captivating performance.
If that's not a perfect vocal, nothing is.
Thats one soulful former social worker. What a beautiful voice.
Wow LOVE This.
A great singer makes you feel the song, not just hear it. Thelma had me experiencing every word she sang. What an amazing talent.
Woooooooooooo weeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!
Well that was exciting. The singer known for great disco tune "Don't Leave Me This Way" in 1976 showed up with a fine performance on Ed Sullivan in 1969. I had noticed on IMDB that she may have been on Ed Sullivan and surprised by that and now thanks to this channel it has been confirmed. Wonderful.
She is an amazing talent. Absolutely wonderful.❤️
I had absolutely, no idea that she did the Sullivan show!!! Thanks for sharing!!! What a brilliant voice.
PLEEAASSEE sing this on The Masked Singer!!!! 🥹
Simply Beautiful.. 😊💖
Beautiful!
What a voice! I got chills!
I’ve always said and asked a recording artist legend friend to pass along to Thelma this very important comment and revelation. She was one of the only singers out there during her heyday able to pay homage to the one and only Dinah Washington. Her management and team missed a perfect opportunity to take her to a different level, as Gordy with Diana Ross’s Lady Sings The Blues triumph. Her tone and perfect diction was right on spot. With some coaching, it would have been phenomenal and would have skyrocketed her singing career. Just my opinion….
Wonderful voice.
Wow just pure singing at it best amazing
Wonderful
Damn, never knew she performed on Sullivan. learn something new everyday
Absolutely beautiful Thelma! What a beautiful voice!😊
♥️♥️♥️
Wow! I was 13 years old then, an avid watcher of that show. Don't recall Thelma until the disco eta. Glad she was successful then. Buy wish we could've heard heard more vocalizations such as on this show! What a beautiful voice! Go girl!
Oooh, she sounds beautiful.
A great singer Thelma Houston always is & proforma, never underrated. I do not know why someone would mention ( underrated) on less they only know of her from, her #1 hit (Baby Don't Leave Me This Way). Always in very stylish fashionable dresses, & beautiful appearance. I have been a fan from the early 70s. Great voice.
Maybe because someone has listened to everything that she's ever recorded and has experienced the brilliance of her instrument and knows how many hidden gems such as this are within her body of work.
She's criminally, underated.
Check out the song, Something we may never know, from her RCA Breakwater cat album as an example.
This is was before Motown.
🔥🔥🔥
Sang Thelma !!!!
S O U L
Wow never knew she sang b 4 her disco hit in 76-77'. This is classy, beautiful and she should have sang more like Broadway type tunes and for movies.
Magnificent performance by Thelma Houston and it's just a shame that it's a different arrangement to the one found on her Jimmy Webb produced and arranged album 'Sunshower', cutting the running time by over a minute and losing the magnificent coda.
Неверагодны голас, дзякуй, Тэльма! Great voice, I love Thelma!
The best version of them all! What an incredible voice...and what control.❤
At last. A version of this fabulous song that does it justice. She is brilliant.
She sung the hell out of this! Effortless power as well!
Pitch and tone plus phrasing on point
My favorite Houston.
You might like to hear Miss Ross' version of this song from the live performance of the Supremes farewell performance...the album in entitled "Farewell." It's awesome.
Wow
