I borrowed a RIP e9 and got it out on a few rides. I was blown away by how much fun it was. I really thought it was going to be boring having the bike doing so much work. Like you said, it felt strange at some of the small features that I normally hop over and play around on, because I couldn't do that. BUT, this was my first experience ever having to get on the brakes in corners going up a hill. The only down side I see to eMTB is that you need to ride with others on a eMTB to get the most fun out of it (IMO). Very smile inducing though.
Clint, you've made the right move with ensuring your gear shifting is in line with the motor's capabilities. The motor's make plenty of torque at lower rpm's but making them work too hard is like moving your car up a ramp in top gear. Just because it can do it doesn't mean it's a good idea. Good reviews too. I like your channel. Fwiw I bought an Ebike a few months ago. Love it.
Thanks for doing a review on a Factory spec’d bike. There’s a few other reviews floating around that have numerous key component up grades on them. The worst part about it is that the upgrades are never mentioned in the video. If I hadn’t already been doing my research I wouldn’t have known any better. Great vid!
Shape a wooden dowel so you can jam it in a hole in the chainring then rotate crank arm backwards against it, now you can cycle chain backwards for your maintenance needs.
great video! thanks or going into such depth with the specs. I just bought one for only 3100. My YT decoy has been having electrical issues ever since it hit 2800 miles so I decided I needed a new bike that wasn't super expensive and hoping to have less issues with the electrical switching to bosh. a little worried about the increase in weight since 49 lb with the yt was allready allot but more stable not as fun for hitting jumps though.
The 150 mm version is closer to 40 pounds, and the down side is the rise' range is no where close to what the Rip has. And the battery is non removable. Its not comparing apples to apples. Two completely different bikes. And i own both, for the record. Though, the rise is fantastic.
Hi Clint. If you plan to keep the ebike for the next tires go for Double Down on Maxxis or the other line just below the fully DH tires, on other brands. It’s a very noticeable improve on ebikes to have the better damping and more supportive casing, that’s for the extra weight alone. Then the other advantages of a robust tire, of course.
Good evening Clint, I truly respect the fact that work and family comes first. As I am a big proponent of your channel and respect your opinion, my queries was both sincere respectful. You are one of the ONLY You Tubers that ride the Niner's. Therefore, I currently ride a Giant 29er Trance 2, and ready to upgrade to an IBIS Ripmo or Ripley OR a Niner Rip 9. I ride trails in Phoenix, Tucson, Sedona and St George. I am looking for a bike with travel, stability downhill and the versatility as a descent climber. Therefore, your opinion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time, Jg
I've been in communication with Ibis over the last couple weeks and they are going to send me a demo in April. Most likely a Ripley. I think it comes down to what you want to focus on... A very capable descender or a more balanced bite that's more versatile. If you're wanting to focus on descents, I would say go for the RIP9 or Ripmo. Although I won't get a chance to ride the Ibis for another couple months, I can say that the RIP 9 is a fantastic machine. Great all around bike with a laterally stiff chassis. It's an efficient pedaling bike but the suspension really opens up on the descent. Niners CVA suspension is one of my favorites. But I've heard incredible things about Ibis so I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either. If you're wanting a more all-around bike then the jet 9 is definitely worth a consideration too. Although I slightly prefer the transitions Spur the Jet 9 was one of my favorite bikes I've ever ridden. Hope this helps.
Got one of these. Except it came with magura mt5 brakes and a zeb fork. Super planted and just flies off jumps. However cleaning is a pain, definitely not designed around sloppy/muddy british trails.
Clint, morning from Thailand. Noted your recent reply as it is greatly appreciated. As I am seriously leaning toward the Rip 9 for desert riding in AZ and Utah, I would like to ask you from a scale from 1 to 10, grade the Rip for climbing, stability, shock / suspension travel and my favorite descending. Thanks and keep the rubber facing down. Jg
Hi Clint, do you have the weight of the battery handy? The weight of the bike definitely is at the limit for what my rack can carry so I’m hoping taking the battery out can keep it under the weight limit.
FYI, with Bosch's Intuvia display you can program the wheel circumference in the "Configuration" mode. (I've not tried to do it on our one bike with Gen 4 HS motor and the Purion display - however, I expect your Bosch certified bike shop can adjust this.) That said, changing the wheel circumference on our Gen 2 CX motor e-bikes had no effect, as far as I could tell. I tried to adjust the wheel circumference when I too noticed the Bosch display showed a higher speed than my Wahoo Elemnt showed using a Garmin speed sensor. Nada, I could see no change in the speed displayed by the e-bike. I suspect Bosch is doing something here. Maybe a marketing thing, where they want the bike to feel more powerful at a given speed? Or a holdover from Europe spec bikes that are locked down to meet European (i.e., German) regulations?
There are two settings for the wheel circumference. One in the display, which doesn't actually change the top speed, and one in the actual ECU of the bike. The latter can only be changed with a Bosch diagnosis system since it will change the max speed of the bike
How much range do you get usually? How long do you ride? I like 3-4 hour rides on varying terrain, so I'm interested if I could get that with 625 battery on emtb mode.
For 3 to 4 hours I would think you would need to use Tour mode for a lot of the ride. I did a 2 hour and 15 minute ride rack at the bike on turbo or EMTB most of the time. The climbs were steep so the battery drain faster. The battery was pretty much a drained when I got done.
@@ClintGibbs hm. I always thought emtb is more like the "trail mode", closer to tour than turbo. I heard with turbo it drains battery very quickly, but thought maybe emtb wouldn't do so
EMTB depends on how much power you were putting out. If you're putting out a lot it will give more power if you're not pushing as hard it'll be more like Tour mode.
Hello Clint, though I enjoy your You tube channel and respect your opinion on bikes; I have yet to hear back from you on any of my comments. Blue skies man, Jg
Sorry John, I try to reply to most comments but with 50-hour work weeks (outside of UA-cam of course) and a family and riding/ racing I can't always get to all them.
At least Niner, doesn't over-charge like Trek. Used a Trek Rail...once. The battery had an annoying rattle. The motor was rattling downhill, Those crappy tires were giving me flats every few miles, and lastly, the super-thin walled Bontrager Rims, had several fractures and chunks of metal missing after a month of riding. Ya gotta be rich to afford e-bikes and the maintenance (of which no one dares discuss on UA-cam), that comes with over-priced frames built at the same manufacturing facility in China, as all other aluminum frames.
I'm 5'8". You are at the top range of a medium and I would probably say large. If there's any possible way you can demo one or at least sit on one that would help with your decision.
The stylized model name seems unfortunate to me. Has the manufacturer designated it as to be referred to in all-caps? I kept thinking you were about to say it failed somewhere down the line.
That’s because prices can really fluctuate I want the reviews to be relevant beyond just the time period that I’m releasing the video. Sometimes I mention prices but for the most part I like viewers to see what the prices are in their area, as they can differ.
My KTM Duke and 2017 H2 as well as the 30+ other real motorcycles I have owned over the past 4 decades disagree. Anyone who makes this comparison is an idiot.

As far as ebikes go the new Orbea Rise is where its at, 36lbs for full suspension, and 150mm of travel that is just insane lol.

how heavy is the battery ?
The 625 wh is about 8 pounds

Functionally it felt similar to XO. I think the main difference is weight.
Gravel e-bike next?
Actually, yes 😊
@@ClintGibbs awesome! I'm curious if an e-bike could allow a non-cyclist spouse to keep up and enjoy riding?
@@shawnhall1971 Yes. That is one of the best advantages for e-bikes in my opinion.
To lube the ebike chains you have to grab the chainwheel with your hand and rotate it backwards. Life hack!

What ?! Only 20mph? That kinda stinks. Is that a Euro regulation or US?
Haven't done much research on it but I think it's global. I'll let someone else chime in who knows about that.

Do a single speed next, with flat pedals 😃
