Sadly the aftermath of the event was not handled well by either side's governments. So it's quite amazing and thus important that we still have the truth of it written to history.

That chocolate bar was the same as would have really been sent to the trenches and Sainsburys reproduced their original packaging for the 100 year anniversary.
Definitely check out the John Lewis Christmad ads. John Lewis is a department store, like Bloomingdales, or a slightly more upmarket Macy's.

As the other comments have said, the UK go big on Christmas adverts. It's definitely a competition over here during the Christmas period and is often highly anticipated by people every year, John Lewis tend to be the most popular christmas adverts and every year there seems to be a lot of publicity about theirs.

Very True and you are right but it has become farcical now due to having to have Ethnic Minorities in every scene in every Advert.
Now if you had a Black, Muslim, or Asiatic Family sitting for a meal then that makes perfect sense. No problem but you are having the ludicrous, totally false situation, where you have 12 members of an indigenous White British Family sitting down for their Christmas meal and in the middle of them sits a lone member of an ethnic minority looking bewildered and having no connection to his fellow Actors. Just looks like Tokenism and Fake.

the detail that Sainsburys went to with this advert is amazing and heart warming. At one point you saw a German soldier giving a British officer a shave, that is based on a true account where a British officer recognised one German soldier who used to run a barbers in London before the war and this German Soldier gave shaves and haircuts to soldiers on both sides for that day. Also the chocolate bar Sainsburys reproduced for that christmas but amazingly all the profits from the sales of that chocolate bar went to the Royal British Legion

2014 was the hundredth anniversary of the start of The First World, I was staying in Ieper Belgium and was visiting a village called Vichte where myself and other members of our battlefield tour group joined the villagers in a service of remembrance at the local catholic church then paying respects to Belgians who died during WW1 wreaths were laid The Belgian National Anthem was played and The Flemish Hymn then we proceeded to The British Cemetery in the village for a remembrance service more wreaths were laid The British National Anthem was played followed by the hymn Abide With Me which closely associated with The Parachute Regiment. The advert is based on The Christmas Truce of 1914 where British, French and German troops met in no mans land. I was working for Sainsbury’s when this advert was made, from the sale of the bar of Belgian chocolate some of the proceeds going to The Royal British Legion, the bar of chocolate sold out in the store I worked at, the advert was made at trenches built for tv and film. The biscuit the British soldier is holding could break your teeth. I have visited the battlefields of The Great War, there is a cross that was placed on the edge of a field down the road from Prowse Point British Cemetery close to Ploegsteert (Plugstreet) Wood (there are three cemeteries in the Wood) by The Khaki Chums a reenactment group a number of years ago to remember The Christmas Truce. The Ploegsteert (Plugstreet) Experience is also in the wood and The Ploegsteert Memorial is the other side of the wood there are two cemetery extensions either side of the road one of them is on each side of the memorial. At Christmas 1914 British soldiers received a tin from Princess Mary which a variety of items. On 11th November 2016 I was presented with The National Soldiers Battalion Medal by The Mayor of Anzegem on my 10th visit to the village of Vichte I was the 5th member of our group to receive it.

There is a brilliant movie called "Joyeux Noel" which is based around the not only the Christmas Truce; but incorporates some of the other tales of WW1 (officers spouses boarding in homes a few miles behind the trenches; local troops sneaking away to visit family members; soldiers all refusing to follow orders when they intentionally miss their shot allowing a German to safely return to his trench etc).
rather crazily one of the only major departure the film creator made from real events was a cat that was known to cross no mans land making friends with the troops & carrying notes between the trenches- which survived the movie as the director could not bare to tell the true story ( the cat was captured by a french General infuriated by the truce, & executed by firing squad for being a German Spy)
you should definitely check out their version of this moment.

British TV advertisements went through a period when many were high quality and, unlike many modern ads, made you want to watch them.
Some top people have been involved in making UK ads. In the late 60s/early 70s our amateur dramatics group was directed by somebody who made TV ads, and we got rave reviews as a result. He subsequently made the Hovis ad, then Blade Runner then . . .

Now it's time for you to watch the John Lewis Christmas ads, there's a whole raft of them going back a few years. John Lewis is the company that probably started the special Christmas ads - notably longer than a normal ad and with high production values and intended to deliver a heartwarming but maybe slightly syrupy message at Christmas time.... and a hope that you'll shop with them.

You may have noticed the British Legion logo at the end of the ad, Sainsburys gave a percentage of the sales to the British Legion who take care of war graves for all nationalities around the world, they also help with rehabilitation of those injured in wars, the Red Crescent do similar around the world too, we don't shout about what is done in this respect because it may be seen as glorifying war, we have our day off remembrance in November when we wear the red poppy, but fundraising goes on all year, I know that you Ethan are aware of this as you have mentioned about it previously. Every year in the UK we look forward to the release of the Sainsbury and John Lewis adverts as they spend a small fortune on their Christmas adverts and they are always of a high quality and they also tug at your heartstrings. If you want to look them up the supermarkets are Sainsbury's, Tesco's and Aldi's the department store is John Lewis, over the years they have made some great commercials.
On average we have a 2-3 minute break every 15 minutes. So a 30 minute programme on the commercial channels will air for an average of around 26 - 27 minutes and a 60 minute programme will air for around 50-55 minutes.
The BBC does not show any commercials as they are funded by our television licence which is approximately £160 per annum, and without it, you can be fined as it is compulsory to owning a television.

This was and still is my favourite Christmas advert. My Great Grandfather was in the Royal Artillery in WW1 aged 15. He lied to fight for his country as his brothers had gone before him to fight. Luckily they all returned but my Great Grandfather was gassed and suffered with breathing difficulties until his death aged 73. Every year there’s a Christmas advert from rival stores, some are rubbish but some are good. Nothing beats this one though 👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧🇺🇸

This was made in conjunction with the amazing British legion who help our Great War heroes.
It’s was to Mark 100th anniversary of the the war, Sainsbury’s even just to send those chocolate bars In those wrappers to the front line.
In the UK we love our war heroes and the advert is to show the young generation about the amazing service these soldiers did . So we never forget them.

One of the reasons this advert is so powerful is that it is based on a true event. Christmas 1914. They, the British and allies had an unofficial one day truce with the Germans. I don't know if the event was depicted correctly as per the video advert but they two sides met in "no mans land", sung songs and played a kick around game of Football. (Soccer). The next day they went back to killing one another.

A lot of people shop for christmas all year whenever theres a big sale for anything theyll go get presents or food or candles or whatever i remember as a kid my nanna had a christmas cupboard she had about 30 grand children at that time and when she died she had about 50 and at least 10 great grand children. Anyway she was frugal and always wanted to make sure christmas was a really great family time. So shed prepare constantly and rarely was she doing anything shopping wise in december besides picking up the fresh grceries shed pre ordered like ham and cherries here in aus. But because our family is so large we basically never exchanged gifts except at christmas or for like a 1st and 21st birthday and we could rarely get everyone together except at christmas so thered be tbis cupboard that was off limits and had wrapping paper and gifts and so many chocolates and lollies and all sorts of treasure like stuff christmas tree and baubles included. So its less preparing early in your perspective as allowing time for our biggest holiday preparations before the actual time when its crazy or hard to find stuff or whatever which also is our hottest time here in midsummer so you want to spend holidays inside or with the fam and not shopping in the heat. Decorating and cooking etc.

There really was an unofficial truce on one Christmas Day when soldiers from both sides put down their arms and played football. Much to the anger of the generals.
That commercial was based on truth.

Xmas adverts are huge and a competition really to see who does the best. You need to look at the John Lewis Xmas adverts. They are usually the ones that make you cry.
Xmas starts here when the adverts come out x

In the UK we have Christmas advert season where all the companies try to out do one another for the best advert and its resulted in some fantastic ads over the years. John Lewis has had some class ones too

Worth checking out Blackadder Goes Forth. WW1 themed. Perfect mix of humour and tragedy. Possibly the most emotional ending to any TV series. They also mention the Xmas truce and the legendary football match with an absolutely hilarious, totally British slant.

christmas ads are huge here in the UK, companies also pour a lot of money into these ads because it is the one time of the year people actual choose and look forward to seeing what some stores do each years - for example john lewis, most major stores pretty much compete for the best ad each year

Just echoing every comment really but definitely add UK Christmas ads to the December video ideas! John Lewis go big on it every year but there's lots of others too who put insane production into them. I'm sure you'll enjoy diving into them

Our Xmas ads are BIG budget over here. Sainsbury’s xmas ads are mad. And John Lewis ones too. Check them out. I think there’s a video about them all.
We don’t have as many ads as you guys. Usually we get three 5 minute ads an hour.
One of my faves is the original Aldi ad. About Tea.
Back in the day there was a few ads that were little shorts that followed on from one another. The Bisto family ads are cool, and the Nescafé coffee ads about this couple who flirt with each other and how each ad the story of their budding relationship continues was iconic. And the Cadbury’s flake ads of the 80s too. The Tango “you know when you’ve been tangoed” ads were mad. SO many good ads

Christmas adverts are a really big thing over here, they start in like November and everyone talks about them once they’re first aired. Once those Christmas adverts start showing, it’s officially Christmas! You should react to some more, John Lewis Christmas adverts are always really good! 😊

UK commercial TV channels in the UK usually (if not always) have 3 sets of ads per hour; mostly 3x 4-minute breaks every 11 minutes... Hope this helps you compare.

A very good series of adverts came from a beer company. My favourite one showed a German soldier standing on a dam and diving like a goalkeeper to push the "bouncing bomb" (built just for this raid) over the wall. Lancaster pilot has punch line - he must drink Carlsberg.

Yeah the german version of silent night is beautiful. Yeah here in the UK we love our christmas adverts, the big companies like John lewis, Sainsbury's, tesco, Morrisons all try to out do each other for the best christmas advert. Normally John lewis wins it each year but that year, that ad came out of no where and blew all the overs away. Its also based on accounts from the soldiers letters etc from the trenches.
as for adverts in the UK the amount of adverts shown is heavily regulated, also BBC channels don't have any. But Ofcom who regulates on how many adverts are shown have restricted it to "In any one clock hour there must be no more than 12 minutes of advertising spots and/or teleshopping spots."
I had a holiday to new york a couple of years back and i was utterly gobsmacked just how many advert breaks and long they where! it was like an add break every 5 mins! crazy!
