Khabibs father seemed like such a genuine person. When khabib announced his retirement and because it being due to his father’s passing, I totally understood it. Losing someone like that in your life is big enough, for him to also be your coach, and your heir apparents coach, your brothers coach, it leaves a void for sure and it can be felt when you’re training and they’re not there pushing you further and further. Clearly khabib needed this man to be as great as he was and i really respect khabibs honesty in that, and his utter refusal to even compete without him.

You got it right man. Your post reminded me... a lot later after his retirement, I came across a vid documenting his very last weight cut. That's when I truly realize he made the right call to retire.. was evident there, something has changed in him. His weightcutting had always been challenging, AoaF channel was there for his Iaquinta, Connor, Poirier camps and it showed how brutal it can get. But vid I saw on the last one was especially moving and you can just feel the emotion in the room... that's very different from previous camps. Their crew usually banter around him and he still participates even if he's drained of energy.
On his last one, the room was dead quiet most the time and when people talk they keep words to a whisper. He seemed fragile not just physically (like other weightcuts he made). The few moments he talked he sounded emotionally messed-up as well. At one point his team was struggling to make him feel comfy lying there wrapped to sweat off the weight.. his eyes were closed and but he was awake giving them instructions on how to move him, help him into a more comfy position on the floor (w/ a shrill voice I've never heard from him before, like he was on the verge of crying). He didn't feel at ease whatever they do, however they follow his instructions.. he was so frustrated he just told them to leave him be and let him sleep for a few. For the first time, he seemed so alone in the midst of many people, his friends... seeing him like that felt the same as seeing how he broke down in the center of the octagon after choking Justin out. Looked like right then his crew was brazing themselves, even if they didn't straight up knew he was considering retiring.. they knew he was at a crucial crossroads in life, not just his career.
