Mr Kauffman, if you like podcasts and mini stories, you will enjoy the 15-minute drama podcast called Hay elMaTTar. It's basically a soap opera in Levantine dialect depicting the war in Syria. It was produced by the BBC and the EU . I got to discover Hay elMaTTar by listening to BBC radio Arabic, also my most used listening resource.

My routine goes like this (Japanese learning)
Wake up 7:00 AM and start binging new words while reading approximately 25-30 words per day. I typically finish at around 10:00 AM. So I spend another 2 hours reviewing everything and making sure they stick, 12:00PM. Sometimes review older words. Then it's listening time! podcasts, anime or shows for around 4 hours. I try to not focus too much on the subtitles and more so on the Japanese. To get a sense of the rhythm/words/grammar. either passive or intensive listening, 4:00PM. It varies depending on my mood. After that I only sit around lingQ for around 30 minutes. I'm not huge on lingQ tbh. Then after all that I'd just go to the gym and relief the stress and start thinking things through without listening to language, 8:00PM. Then it's either free time or more practice and that's it for the day! For me I found flashcards and reviewing words (aka spaced repetition) an affective method to insert those complicated words further into my brain. It's been working out perfectly for a month now and I wish to continue with this routine as I'm finding great success in it!

    • @Thelinguist
      @Thelinguist  3 роки тому +2

I like to listen to audio where I can access the transcript, look up words and have a chance of understanding it. I'm not so fond of listening to audio where I don't understand much. On the other hand watching a series from Netflix in Egyptian Arabic where I'm struggling to understand, is nevertheless entertaining. I follow along with English subtitles. It's my exotic culture immersion. It motivates me to learn more.

A lifestyle to aspire to! I wish I could find a way to effectively combine immersive listening with resistance training. When lifting weights I need to fully concentrate on maintaining proper form on each repetition, meaning that I can't concentrate on the audio in the background. And when I'm not concentrating on the audio, there is no benefit in terms of language acquisition.

My morning routine is to read for half an hour in a language I am maintaining (that is a language which I have learned and which I am not actively learning any more). I am leaving the active language for the part of the day when I am ready for the long run and the heavy weight lifting (so to speak). Having a routine is essential in language learning (and anything else, where you want to achieve success).

I use to listen to my second language while I am doing other things more often. But it seems I remember and comprehend more by doing more reading in another language. I then listen and watch a UA-cam video cartoon in another language. Then I go to a language learning website to listen to sentences and words that are interested to me.

I have been waking up early at 5:00 am last week. I have never felt that much energetic in my life before. I wake up and do 1 or 1.5 hour of rollerblading that really sweats me up, like dripping sweating. then I am taking a cold shower and start my day. While doing all this I listen poscasts or stories in German. It is interesting to me I burn energy in the morning yet I have more energy and vitality than other days I don't do rollerblading.

  • @slicksalmon6948

    Here's my routine:
After I get up, the first thing I do is read the transcript for the pre-recorded French news broadcast that I will listen to later during my walk.
After breakfast I do my indoor workout with some sort of UA-cam French playing in the background. It's usually 'man on the street' interviews of which I understand very little.
Then I take a one hour walk during which I listen to the news broadcast I previously previewed.
In the afternoon, I spend at least an hour translating and reading aloud the material I will use for the following day. Speaking it prepares my brain to hear it.
Before dinner, I spend 30 minutes reading a French newspaper just to see if I understand anything. (answer: not much)
In the evening I listen to a 30 minute InnerFrench podcast styled to my language level.
All that adds to at least 3 hours/day. Except for the newspaper, my language study is composed entirely of "comprehensible input" or material I'm tying to upgrade to "comprehensible". The only grammar I study are issues that pop up during my translation sessions (e.g., why did they use the subjunctive in that situation?). I don't do any drills. Other than reading aloud, I spend zero time conversing in French. I'm waiting for that skill to emerge organically.
If this doesn't work, I'm going to direct a few harsh words toward Stephen Krashen.

Wait so passively listening can help a lot? I usually practice a couple hours a day, I use Bussu, Duolingo and Language Transfer, plus I read a bit before bed, like maybe 30 mins. I also have Peppa Pig on my tv pretty much at all times in the language I’m learning. I’m not sure if passively listening like this will teach me anything of value in the long run.

Hello Mr. Kaufmann, im currently using lingq for german language and I have noticed that my lingqs(the yellow ones)are 4000 approximately and are less than the words I actually know(the white ones)which are 6000 approximately, is that a good indication of my progress?Because I noticed in some other videos of yours, your lingqs are waaay more than the words you actually know(so I am doing the opposite :(
Also my second question is that in how many known words will I be able to feel fluent in german language specifically(around B2 to C2 level, is the gap between B2 and C2 huge?) (being able to comprehend almost everything in a newspaper or generally) ofcourse you cannot say an exact estimation but according to your experience with germanic languages you can at least predict an approximate estimation
Thank you an advance your lingq rocks!!

This is depends on the language. in some languages there are words that you easily recognize based on languages you already know.

Hi, Steve, thanks for remarkable video, suppose you are the most experienced in tat stuff and your approach is quite useful.
I have got a question.....do you have any thoughts and ideas of finnish language?
It is not so popular and it differs greatly from the most european ones......
but anyway, the question still exists........

I have never tried to learn finish. However I would go about it the very same way. I doubt that it is more difficult in Arabic or Chinese, since it is written in the Latin alphabet.

If I try to enter LingQ as a new user and I already know probably a thousand words or more in a language, is it easy to catch up on my progress with the course? Do I just check and check all the LingQs I know? Does it have audio listening as well?

There's an option for "paging moves to known" where if you turn the page all the unknown words will be set to known. Just start reading some material at your level and pretty quickly your known words will shoot up.

Sorry to be the one to call this out but what exactly is the point of having subtitles for the videos? Sometimes they'll be there and sometimes not. Even if they are there, it's a different set of languages every time, so if a new/regular viewer doesn't have the subtitles in their language, they can't understand it. Not to mention how many cumulative hours of unpaid work that is just for credit to the volunteer's name? Makes you wonder why people tend to irrationally jump into things without understanding what they get into or in this case, where their time goes

My argument still stands with the additional fact that the intended use of the subtitles were never clarified. If it was to reach a larger audience, there should be more languages and should have been implemented a long time ago. Maybe it's a different set of languages because they're losing motivation from consistent unpaid work. Not answering my question of what the point is implies supporting such irrational actions and a lack of critical thinking like the sheep kissing ass. Go ahead and keep supporting it. There are already too many people wasting their own time while some of us value ours

@@michaelrespicio5683 lol often subtitles are added by a person’s audience and not by the poster so it’s based on whoever has the time to take the effort to help add the subtitles and it’s sometimes useful to others. It’s not some ill-thought out decision. It takes a lot of time and effort to do subtitles and, while content creators should always try to make the effort, it is a big effort. So availability of subs often comes down to who in the audience bothered to make subs. Maybe you can make more subs in different language for his videos to add some consistency ;)

It can range from 10% to 60% or more depending on the language and where I am in the language.
