I did use some strong language like "the OnePlus Open not being objectively the best foldable phone", but I'm mostly saying it's not the perfect saviour foldable phone that reviewers and people online made it out to be. I actually think it's a great phone, but it has some issues and shortcomings that make me look at other foldables over it 🙏🏿. Really solid information, it's good to hear more about the Open's shortcomings over all this time since its launch, it's been hard to find videos that discuss these things in the detail you've given here
Your last statement sealed the deal. Samsung is on its 6th iteration and OnePlus open is basically their 1st and a strong competitor. Yes, the phone did not work out for you in every aspect, but OnePlus is doing flagships the right way once again.
Does anyone know how you can use the rear camera for selfie pictures WITHOUT adding a portrait effect? I keeping getting a portrait effect even when im just taking a standard photo
I switched from the Z fold 5 to the OP a few weeks ago for the sake of a bigger cover screen. In fact I decided to break up with Samsung after 12 years long 'relationship' 😊. I agree there are annoying software glitches/features especially compared to how solid Samsung software that I sometimes miss, but I really enjoy the hardware, the invisible crease, the weight, the fluidity, the camera, the battery, and the look of Oxygen software. Add to that there are features I really enjoy in the OP that I didn't have in the ZF5 like the bedtime mode activation when charging the phone, the eye protection schedule, hiding the app, the gestures, to say the least. For me these are enough not to regret my decision. In the end what matters is what you use the most in your phone and what not. Thanks for the honest review though.
I'm glad you're happy with your OpO! The things you said you liked are actually things I liked about the OpO, too. For those software features that you mentioned, they are actually available on the Fold 5. For the bedtime while charging, you can set that up in modes and routines. The eye protection schedule can be set up in display settings. Hiding apps can be done in home screen settings. Regardless, though, like you said, it comes down to what you value the most, so it's cool that you chose the OpO in the end.
Sorry to heqr about your problems with the Open but I think your phones software is bugged. I dont have any of the issues on the settings menu you have nor the camera short cut. Try to factory reset you phone and see if it resolves you issues
@@JamaltLee triple splitscreen - no Flexible floating windows - I think it does, but only if you load the app from the sidebar. But most important, this settings lets you use every app in splitscreen in either shrink or expand mode, which is awesome
Great job , you should give these feed back to Oneplus and talk about it on the Forums . I still want to get one i love this design and i hope the second version come out better that the 1 and they still keep making the one and it gets more affordable .
I think its good for people to post negative experiences with their phones especially if they are influencers cause it incentivizes companies to make improvements on their devices. Thanks for the video.
No Fold is "objectively" better. That WAS silly to say, lol. I Bought a Z Fold 5, returned it because I didn't realize the crease would be so deep, ugly, and catch light so badly. It's horrendous. I don't know how any Z Fold user who payed 2 grand for their phone can stare at the grand canyon running down the entire length of their display every day. The ONLY thing that matters to me was the crease. Clearly that doesn't really matter to you, and software is more important. That's cool, but you can't say "objectively" better. I agree the multitasking was way better on the Samsung. I do miss that, but not enough to stare at a crease all day. It was so distracting. Edit: Just checked my OP Open and double pressing the power button does open the camera, even with screen on. Maybe you need an update? Or to change something in settings?
That's fair 😂. I wasn't being fully serious when I said objectively tbh, I just knew it would annoy some people, and people have basically been saying the OpO was objectively better since it was announced lol. I agree, it all comes down to preferences and what we all value the most. If my OpO was just bugged that's pretty crazy. Thanks for the respectful comment despite me using the word objective like that 😂.
Damn, I just wish the fold6 or newer would have a screen width to the note20 that I'm on. I know I'll be using the front screen more than half the time and it'll be tough getting used to that aspect ratio. I feel like Samsung did this semi on purpose so we use the main screen more
I feel like if you're going to use the outer display more, then maybe you should just go with the OnePlus open or another fold. The folds have better software imo, but if the hardware isn't comfortable for you personally, then I think the OpO is a decent enough alternative. It's not like the software on that is bad. it's just not on OneUis level for certain things imo. You also lose full water resistance and wireless charging with the OpO though.
hands down a better phone than the Z fold ... in like literally every meaningful way (dozens of ways) Only issue is the size of the camera bump ... which doesn't really matter at the end of the day at all
Respect James. I don’t comment much but appreciate your reviews. My fear with OnePlus open is the software and support as I’ve read about horror stories. I’m waiting for the Fold 2 announcement on Tuesday and see how that compares to Fold 6. OnePlus Apex looks amazing but can’t go wrong with Samsung or google as they will crush on the software and support. Dead pixels and horrible support is what I’ve read on several platforms and I’m not in going chase mode.
That's why I'm leaning more towards the fold 6 or even importing Vivo x fold 3 or Honor magic v2 porsche edition. Software is very important and that's where Samsung excels
God damn it and here I was looking into getting the Oneplus open since I can trade in any old phone that is not a oneplus phone and get $200 toward their phone making it more affordable for me to actually be able to afford the oneplus open. Really from the bottom of my heart thank you for this type of reviews. There is not many Big youtuber that would actually do what you did without them being bias like they are with Apple products and their damn phones haha. Not only that I was finally able to save some funding for my very first flag ship phone too. :(
I think you should still consider the OnePlus Open. It's not like it's a horrible device, it just has some bugs and shortcomings in terms of software features. I think for most people it'll be a good phone. Good luck 🙏🏿🙏🏿
A few things: Really sick opening with showing what's inside the box. I really like that Thanks for not being an automatic fanboy and just being real. Objectiveness is rare to come by. I know an Apple fanboy who is too unreal with iPhony so I love to see videos like this. Easily opening the camera seems like a small thing but it really is big because sometimes you have to capture moments really quick so I'm glad you covered this.
Qpqpqpqpqpqpqpqpqp try that and then owowowowiw You'll see qpqpqpq get extremely laggy.. as miss touch prevention (THAT YOU CANNOT TURN OFF), IS über buggy and tok agressieve.. the whole software sucks.. Oh not to mention, my screen stopped working for the second time in 3 months.. rma did the job for a few weeks and BAM broken again.. its a nightmare.
@@JamaltLee i forgot to me mention that the repair was not executed properly. The front screen was loose and Miss aligned, and the inner had a crack inside the non removable screen Protector. In my opinion its not good to open a phone up and glue it back together. You're basically screwed if you have to send it for RMA.. so enjoy the device while it lasts.
I've been using both phones for a while. OP open is just lacking in the software/features department compared to fold 5. OP Open does kill the fold 5 in regards to battery, charging, heat management and cell/data reception which alot of reviewers don't cover. At the end of the day I would chose the fold 5 for it's software/features. The OP Open has just too many software glitches in many apps that I use. I think both are good phones though

All the bugs you have pointed out, I cannot get past the Samsung skinny screen or that hideous crease.
True, everyone values different things for sure

It’s not their first 1 tho. The oneplus open is literally the oppo Find n3 so it’s actually their 3rd or 4th
@@dillonbanks609 good point. Still not nearly as many iterations and still considered one of the best if not the best in the US market.

Yeah maybe it was bugged. I really hate factory resetting for no reason, so I didn't consider it. I probably should have done that.
You can fix most of the multitasking quarks you talked about in the developer settings
You can have a triple splitscreen like samsungs? And flexible floating windows?
@@JamaltLee triple splitscreen - no
Flexible floating windows - I think it does, but only if you load the app from the sidebar.

Double tap for camera works for me
It's the best looking foldable phone. It's just the right size. That's what people were talking about.
Really appreciate your time taken and the detail. I will probably wait for the next version and hope to have wireless charging too.
Double tap to open the camera works for me. I just did it.

The oneplus open is my favorite phone and I’m never going back to Samsung fold
The Open is definitely a work-in-progress, but it's a very good device. The price point makes OnePlus way more attractive than Samsung.
How did you get that volume slider in the menu near brightness slider? I just got the oneplus 12
I'm not sure what you mean, could you explain it more or tell me where in the video you saw that?
