    I've done this to guitars. Unfortunately I thought the title of this video referred to playing when you have arthritis and carpal tunnel, which I have.

    1st of all, Matt thank you for this idea and step-by-step explanation!
    This mod is the main game changer! 100%!
    I did it with cheapest Ibanez grx40 (nothing to loose), however i covered fretboard and non sanding area with masking tape, as you told in video.
    And in fact on it's finish i need only 1000 grit, cuz' when I started to increase grit, at 3000(all wet) - this neck became to be glossy again. So i stoped and just repeat process with only wet 1000. Many factors could infuence: factory finish, sandpater, water, whatever.
    But result is freakin awesome!!!
    Playability, speed and comfort increase, like this is $1000+, or $2000+ guitar!!!
    P.S. Matt please give more advices)
    This sort of things, from professional musician is a treasure!!!
    Thanx a lot!!!

    Yeah I bought those green pads myself because youtube told me but I've never used them they look very scratchy .With my clear coated necks I wasted my time with super fine paper at first but sound found out 320 600 and 1000 are all you need That will turn it from a sticky gloss to a silky smooth satin in no time .Give it a few min with all three and keep going a few min at a time til it feels perfect ..I usually seal it with Monty's instrument food when I'm sure it's sanded enough.

    I see what you meant about the steel wool, I guess if you use steel wool then it would def become slick and sticky again, good job on this tutorial, this method would most probably work with long hours of playing

      It’s different in other cases. This is my particular situation and how I’m dealing with it. So definitely not the “only” way to attack this issue.
      So far its lasting, but I’ll need to rough it up again in a few months or so. The idea is to just not eat away too much of the Clear Coat all at once.

    Great video! I've used 0000 steel wool for years on all my necks. I never worry about taping off personally but I'm never worried about looks.
    Take the steel wool. Do some moving up and down the back of the neck and it's good to go

    Yeah. I can’t stand painted necks. Which is why I was never into Les Paul’s and others that have painted necks. I did run across a Hamer Chapparal Custom back in the 80’s that I couldn’t live without. After about the 3rd show, I sanded the back of the neck. Played slicker than snot on a door knob after that!

    Hey man, so I bought this LTD EC-1000 second hand and a guy who had it before left this Ernie Ball straplock thing on it, then let the guitar sit in a case for like 3 years aaand now it has a weird circle around a strap pin. Would the process of bringing it back to almost normal look similar to what you showed in your video? Thanks!

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  Місяць тому

      Im sorry to hear that…
      Unfortunately you cant really “spot clean” using this process..
      Its hard to say without seeing the guitar what you should do.. but maybe its worthwhile to bring it to a repair expert for advice in person.

    The biggest problem with steel wool is that it oxidizes super easy. Then the tiny tiny bits of metal floating around looking magnets. It’s a messy potentially harmful medium. You don’t want corrosion fuel on your hardware and pups.
    That said… I prefer 600 then some 0000 steel wool. lol.

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  11 місяців тому

      The effect on the hardware and pups is a good point to consider when using steel wool. 👍🏼 I wish I could test that to show people.. but I love my gear too much! 🙈
