    Nothing like the feeling of getting rid about everything when i moved to Thailand from Australia getting rid of all the crap you build up,i sold/gave away just about everything,a great feeling,now i am thinking about moving from Thailand to the Philippines,i will do it again,although less stuff,make you realise you do not need all this crap.

    here is an advise from a Filipina living in california...I go back to the Philippines every year and stay for a month or two (balikbayan)...I also stayed in Pampanga region for 7 months 2 years ago... you have to sell or get rid of everything you have to move to a different country.... it's just material stuff that you can get anywhere in the world... for example...furnitures (beds, tables, chairs,etc.), kitchen stuff (plates, utensils, pots,etc.),, refrigerator,stove, TV... if your new place wont have these, you can buy them in the Philippines... the only things you have to take with you are clothes, t-shirts, underwear, etc...it's kind of hard to find bigger size clothes in the Philippines... their large size is like a small for me and I'm not fat. I'm a size 8 in American woman's size... if you have trouble finding your size there... there is always a Taylor nearby to make clothes for you... you can get fabric anywhere.... Make sure you have about $2,500 saved up for... if you might have to go back to your old home country ...to get new furniture and stuff... that's about the amount you will need for Ikea furniture in the U.S. It will also help if you keep a bank account in the u.s. but can access in the Philippines... doesn't make sense to pay for storage ...it's a waste of money... you wont need much in the Philippines... you wont need much clothes either... make sure to have a few sweaters for those cooler nights. make sure to open a philippine bank account as soon as you get to p.i... this is from my own experiences from traveling and moving.

    I`m a all eggs in one basket bloke, my wife of 32years is Filipino and we decided to get of the treadmill and retire although things didn`t quite turn out that way. As you`ve said have money coming in all the time we have pensions and now farming Rice since we`ve bought over a Ha of land, I`ve been here now for 3 years a relative newbie but have you mentioned the 13a visa?, the alien registration slip, the one thing that you cannot comment on is of course retiring here which alot of us British expats are doing. Also its important to become part of the community, attempt to learn the local dialect or the National Language Tagalog ( pronounced Ta gaa log) perhaps you ought to mention that. Recommend you build your own house too I`m none too keen on the central living space, and build a stout wall to keep the Family out!

    Great video. I've been going there since 1983 (since 22 yrs old!), we have a home in the central islands where the wife is from, all set up for a long time. We go every two years for 5 weeks. But, I could not stay there for long term. I know I will miss everything here. When we retire we will go back and forth yearly, but I can not stay there. I love it there, and no matter how much fun I have there and all the things to see, I still miss the good old USA after a few weeks. It's a great place to visit, but I would not want to live there. But that's me. Thanks for the fun, educational and interesting videos and I will continue to watch.

    Me and my Asawa are moving to Cebu next year. We are doing pretty much exactly as you have said. Most of our stuff in going in storage on my brothers property, I have plenty in a saving account that we will not touch (used solely for the purpose of returning to the US), and have a decent monthly income. Our plan is for her to go back to college to get her Masters degree (will take 2 years) and decide from there if we want to stay or move back to the US.

    Yup, have enough money saved for two tickets back to your home country, and 6 months of average rent and food at your come country. Then lock that money away and throw away the key! :) Then as Ned said be sure to have enough money saved for your move because it will cost you more then you think even if you have a place to stay i.e family in the Philippines. Great advice in this video, especially the tip about buying from foreigners who are leaving!

    Hello Ned and Michelle. I watch all your videos. Thank you for you hard work, I enjoy them thoroughly. I am in the beginning process of creating a successful farm in Mindanao trying to help lift people out of poverty. My health prevents me from traveling there but I do upload videos to my channel. But I'm always frustrated because of my lack of knowledge of how to resize and post good pictures on my channel. I have some posted but it takes me forever. I have lots of pics and videos available though. Anyway keep up the great work!

    Definitely agree to have an exit plan. And to be flexible minded. 2014 my plan was to take a severance offer with my employee - take the cash and bail - move to manila for a year and visa run.Sell my stuff - cut on the UK and bail. Live with my partners family.
    2015 went out to manila and had a great time BUT 3 issues. 1 ) it's not as cheap as i had budgeted. Yes it was cheap but not as cheap as I planned - my money would be gone in half the time..... 2) my employer backed out of the original severance deal so plans laid to rest ( so it couldn't happen anyway) - period ( biggie ) 3) I went back to the UK appreciating stuff I had taken for granted ( hot water EVERYWHERE and not just in some places ) - hygiene levels - general standard of roads - homes - lifestyle..health care. Freedom to roam Europe when I felt like it. In the end it worked out perfect for me and perfect for my love; because I plan to visit there yearly for holidays and to get some well needed sun and warmth when the UK is freezing cold. Also she can visit me for vacations. Maybe I'll end up in the Phillipines one day - who knows ..... But for the time being its vacations only.

    My Personal Tip: Don't "sell everything" or "get rid of everything".
    Bring or ship those things that are personal to you, because a house without personal items is foreign as the country you live in. I personally am shipping all my art work, musical instruments I've collected, pictures and family photos, etc...
    You've lived a good life, leaving the U.S. behind doesn't mean you should throw away your memories when you settle in the Philippines. Bring your life and memories with you.

    Ned your videos are very informative and so are Henry Valez's
    Life beyond the sea videos that I watch. I'm getting all the information that is going to be very helpful for me before I return
    home to the Philippines for good within the next 3 years, hopefully
    sooner. My oldest son who is in the Air Force is going to retire
    from it in two years is planning on making a trip there to
    Cebu City, Dumagete City, plus Cavite City & Olongapo City.
    I have my choices of where I want to live in the Philippines,
    4 provinces I have already picked out, I lived in one of them almost
    27 months when I was in the Navy, that was Olongapo City
    which I'm most familiar with.

    The best place to retire and have a peaceful life is GUIMARAS ISLAND. It is 15 minutes from the city of iloilo by pamboat. Dumaguete is not bad but GUIMARAS is a lot better . Bunch of Germans and Americans are now building houses to retire in that beautiful and peaceful island. Trust me if anybody is planning to retire in the Philippines that's the right place. Visiting and living here is very different. But Ned advise is very sound. I have many years under my belt, Once the shin has worn off, you will have to learn to deal with many things. I am many others say " will in my country we do it like this" Philippines is not your country and they do it different. Learn to accept it, Nothing is going to change for you. Why do Filipina's marry us, My thought on it is we are a status symbol, kind of like owning the brand name item.

    Hi Ned I hope you are both well......you have lost weight....understandable with what has been going on, I hope your sciatica is not giving you extra grief.
    A lot of common sense coming from yourself......I was made redundant last year and I opted to take my pension and redundancy payment, luckily I walked into another job, (a lot lower pay but my pension has topped it up, so I am better off financially), I am 57 years old my pension is a modest £10,000 per year ( approx $15,000 ) and I have put most of my Lump Sum and Redundancy into Stocks and Shares ( performing quite well but they can go up or down and you could lose everything ), they can provide another £3,000 to £4,000 per year income in dividends should I so wish, but I am currently reinvesting the dividends back into stocks and shares.
    My plan is to work for another three to four years, save more money, the stocks and shares should hopefully perform well, and when I am 66 my UK state pension kicks in ( about £7000 per year, approx $10,000 ). The problem I have is what to do with my house. I thought about renting, but then I am half a world away, or maybe sell and invest in stocks and shares. There has only been a one ten year period over the last hundred years where houses prices have gone up more than the UK stock market, that is the big decision to make, when I finally do make the move.
    With my current pension, I could move to the Philippines, but I want to be able to go Island hopping, visit the nearby countries, have the cash to pay for Health Insurance and treatment, and I also want to leave my Filipina well provided for when I finally kick the bucket.
    I have only just returned yesterday to the UK from my second visit to Davao.
    I have missed your posts and vids, understandable with what has been going on, maybe we can meet up for a meal next time I come over to the Philippines

    A lot of people, me included. are moving from the US. I'm sick of the politicians, the regulations, the government manipulation, lots of other things. I'm old enough to retire now, and my wife owns a house and some farmland in a remote province. I'll put up solar panels, I have a very good water purification system, and do some other things to make life there smoother.
    The problems as I see it are I like peace and quiet (seems to be rare there), I don't speak the language, and I'll need to get used to hot,humid, rainy weather. I've also had problems in the past with the way things are done in RP. People often simply don't do their jobs in a timely manner. What should take a few hours sometimes takes weeks, if it gets done at all. Sometimes government officials need their palms greased, waiters give you a spoon when you want salt, things like that.

      ***** It all depends an what quality of life means to you. Where I'm going I can get DSL, life is peaceful, and that's the way I like it. When I move to RP I'll start a new YT channel, and put up videos about my life there.

      John Strabismus Yep,,,That is the Philippines...Now you already know what is ahead, do you REALLY want to go there?I hear Subic is a good place for Americans to live...Just like home apparently..Clean, quiet, malls and has all the bells and whistles..

    • @jwwm2
      @jwwm2 9 років тому

      Jim hammond I'm still young enough for a Really Big Adventure, and that's the way I'm looking at it. I see nothing good happening in the West, and I'm gonna get outta Dodge. I already have a place to live, a way to grow food, a large and well respected politically connected family. and the good graces of the Church due to some of our charitable contributions. Some of my life there will suck. Some of it will be fabulous.

      edmhie1 The very nature of all governments is to grow, to coerce, and to manipulate.In the old days people could move away from it, but those days are gone.

    First off i want to THANK YOU for posting these vids! I have been talking to a girl their for 6 months and trying to head their from ohio this year and stay 30days for starters.. Your vids and updates really helped me thru my thought processes and such. Im actually thinking of leaving my job and coming their and leaving my house i own sit while i make first visit.. Then decide what to do next! Sound familiar? lol What part are you in ??? Thanks Kelly (40yr old male)

    • @nictoo49
      @nictoo49 9 років тому +1

      Kelly Koon Kelly...............a 30 day visit is a good idea, but quitting your job is not unless you are independently wealthy..............I advise taking small baby steps first and then work your way up to a big decision later............if you are only 40 now then you will have plenty of years ahead of you to make such a life changing decision....... best of luck

    • @kellykoon6999
      @kellykoon6999 9 років тому

      Thank you Jim I'm kind of thinking the same way. and I do OK for myself but I'm actually in automobile sales and those jobs are a dime a dozen I have not burn my bridges anywhere I've worked at so any place would take me back and open arms. But yeah the 30 day visit I think is what I'm going to do and see how it goes from there and then decide if I want to progress into a more serious the situation or not. have you ever lived there before? Maybe I should read your page and see what you are about but anyway I do appreciate the thought fullness of getting back to me and you have a blessed day and maybe I will shoot you a message sometime. again thanks for giving me your advice and I do appreciate that

    • @nictoo49
      @nictoo49 9 років тому

      Kelly Koon your welcome Kelly...............no I do not live there and cannot for serious health reasons...........but I have been there several times and last time was there for a month in Jan. of this year......I have a gf near Cebu that I visit along with visiting her family..........good to hear that you have some flexibility with ur job situation.......I am 65 with a business that I need to run here in US, plus my health and insurance issues will keep me here most of the months, but my goal is to spend about 3 months a year in PH.....my gf is separated and an annulment is a long and expensive process with no guarantees of success. so this is my situation for now.

    • @nictoo49
      @nictoo49 9 років тому

      Kelly Koon Also for me............I need to stay a little busy with some work or I go crazy.........I had a bit of an alcohol indulgence tendency when I was younger and too much down time for me causes me problems, but I am no work-aholic either.,.I just need some balance in my life. For me spending most of my time in my US home and 3 months traveling is a perfect mix for now.

    My Filipino family is from Valencia City in
    Bukidnon...I plan to retire in 2 years but I'm looking more at Davao. I have advanced degrees and I hope to land a part-time job at one of the universities. I also have a vitamin and supplement business that has gone global (we are licensed in the Philippines). Would you recommend staying out of Mindanao completely?

    • @romeodeguzman9041

      Valencia and Davao are both great retirement areas but have slightly different ambiance..Davao is more urbanized and Valencia, a little laid back. The advantage of Valencia is the generally cooler climate and available expansive farm lots to keep you busy and healthy..

    Good advice Ned...
    I lived there for a few years earlier and although things have changed there since then, I have maintained contact with friends and visited often and will be going back to live, full time, by the end of this year..Hopefully...
    Australians seem to have an easier time over most other foreigners because we can tell them we are really poor..And only there because we want freedom of choice,,That seems to work,.(They don't seem to know about us .We do not advertise Ha ha ha).
    ,Seriously, it is not for everyone...I read the forums and the number of people who complain they can't get american peanut butter or a good eye fillet is amazing.
    (That is after I eliminate those who live in Little America..(Subic area).
    Plus they all seem to want to live for "NO COST"....You can live well if you are smart and have good social relationships with a community that trusts you.
    You covered all the bases mate.....Now let the mistakes begin.....

      ***** You know where i am coming from don't you?....I used to meet up once a week at a coffee shop in Cagayan de Oro with these "crusty old expats" while our wives shopped etc....Most of them had longings for food that was imported, Bud beer, Something called instant pancake mix etc...This was over 25 to 30 years ago and Mindanao was a virtual war zone then...Most things were hard to get....My main worry was my guard having enough ammo for the trip back to the house...Now you can get everything IF YOU UNDERSTAND that imported gear costs....Today you just gotta roll with the flow...You fight, you loose...
