  • UPDATE: "Draw Better Portraits Through the Study of Anatomy" my new full portrait anatomy course is finally here! app.gumroad.co...
Today's Figure Friday Ep 3 we are using the Loomis Method instead of the Reilly Method to draw the figure. Starting out I sketched the framework then added more parts and finally built on the anatomy. Give it a try and draw along with me. Let me know if you have questions. Best place to find me is on UA-cam, Patreon or Instagram. Thanks guys for sharing the videos!

Look at the negative space between the legs. Might help identify how the angle of the bent leg was off. Thanks for posting these. I’m learning so much!

I had the same thought, I noticed when he aligned the framework of the leg directly with the plumb line, miniming the amount of negative space between the legs.

its an old video so idk if you already find out or someone else commented but I think the left knee seems to be inline with the outer shoulder and the right leg is slightly bent in the reference which makes that gap, but this video really helped me thank you

thank you very much for these vids! I've watched every figure Friday you've made and I have learned a lot. Question, I'm starting to draw and taking it seriously, are there some books or techniques you can recommend me? I have learned a lot with your videos about figure and posing, could you make one about shadow and light?

Thank you for checking it out!! You don’t have to hold the pencil my way because the concepts to the drawing are the same regardless of pencil grip.

i think the hips were a tad narrow, so even though your legs are angled properly, there is limited space between them

    Love your vids.
Seems like you are open and wanting of critique so here are my observations. You are exponentially better at drawing then me.
My noob critique is the legs ended up too straight without a big enough gap between them, especially around the knee level. Basically the right knee should be bended more out and possibly rotated a little more out. Left knee looks like it could bend more, your rhythm feels like a line while the reference feels more like curve. I feel the ankles overall could use more tension/bend in them.
Right pec could be higher and more rotated out, probably stemming from problem with the right shoulder which should be raised and rotated a little. Or left pec/shoulder could be further down, maybe a mix of both. Looking closer left shoulder could be wider. RIght hip could be slightly lower. Left forearm further angled out.

I follow you for 2 years now, Bradwin, you're doing amazing work.
Small little detail of anatomy which Riley and Loomis perhaps didn't know and you're being faithful to them.
Upper segment to lower segment ratio in males is 1.2 :1 in males and reverse in females. This is evolutionary.. across the world.
Upper segment refers to the distance from top of head to the pubic tubercle, and lower segment from ground till the pubic tubercle.
