When I worked on the Swift dam project with Kiewit we poured with a Gomako Bidwell every day for 4 months 6days a week 12 hrs a day. Welcome to the party.
Wait til you see a video for a bridge deck for a railroad. Because of the rebar sticking up for the rail plinths the machine just sets the grade and you have to finish the whole thing by hand.
@@michaelshahayda1167 My husband and our 2 sons have been in concrete construction most of their lives. Mostly in housing construction. But my oldest son branched out and joined the cement masons union. He's worked on one bridge that scared the heck out of me. Freeway work also worries me. He worked in Seattle underground in the lite rail tunnel. Not sure how you spell it. Another thing that's always worried me is rebar sticking up. He is now teaching on a college campus students to become apprentices. He was chosen out of 10 others who applied. He's perfect for the job. I used to get so upset when I tried helping his little sister with her homework. He would come and say mom let me try, you go sit down and relax. And it then got quiet as he would talk with her. Their dad and I are aging at 67 and 69. He still does some concrete work and my son helps on his days off when needed. My other boy left WA state and went to the aviation academy in FL. He graduated in the class after 2 years with honors top in his class. But no job came out of it as he had been told there would be. But he's doing well with installing security systems in big warehouses and other buildings. Geez I'm not proud or anything right? I know your work is at times very dangerous and I know it's physically demanding. Eat good and get plenty of rest. And I hope if you have a partner and or family they are supportive. Your peace and happiness mean more than anything to those who love you.
I'm Not Just a Useless Eater There might be video, but I didn’t take any, as I’m usually doing the finishing. I wouldn’t call bridge work particularly dangerous, but it is very physically demanding; hand floating hundreds of yards of concrete will wear out anybody. So I have a lot of respect for anybody that does it. Cement Masons Union is a good union to join, particularly the Seattle local.
@@michaelshahayda1167 Thank you. Most of what my boys and their dad have done is flatwork too. They were very good with exposed aggregate. Not done right can look bad and then everything around it looks bad too. Done right it compliments everything else. On the bridge or some other job, oh yeah my oldest when early in the union worked at Bangor where the keep the submarines. They contracted with an outfit doing a job for the Navy. They were building metal buildings several stories high out over the water. They had to wear safety belts or harnesses. He might be 43 now but I don't know where all the years have gone. Going way too fast these days. Mom's are mom's till the day they die. I thought it would be different when they got to be the age they are. My mom died young so I never got to see how she would be around her kids as adults my kids age. Thank you for telling me about the union in Seattle. Seattle as a city has gone to hell though. There's a video on YT called Seattle is Dying. Interesting and true. In fact WA state needs a new governor. This side of the state is so liberal it's not thinking of our own problems and they seem to want more. I'll be going to stay over by Mountlake Terrace for a couple days next week with my son so I'll get to see how bad it really has gotten. Homeless people everywhere. More drugs & alcohol and hence more crime. They need solutions to help Americans before helping others. Thanks again! Namaste and best to you.
I worked on the 520 floating using this same bidwell set up when it was snowing and 17 deg really cold over Lake Washington. Local #528
